Hi , for roughly the last 9 years i have been paying charges of £ 35 pounds a month to natwest for being over my overdraft limit . Would i be able to claim it back and what is the best way to go about it ?

Thanks in advance for any help .
  • Hi there. I'm just new to all this and had a quick query as I'm compiling my list of charges.

Can I claim for both the charge and the unauthorised overdraft fee? I was charged £35 by HBOS for a DD taking me beyond my overdraft and a monthly fee of £28.

    Thanks for your help :)
  • Yes, anything that is an unreasonable amount
Help me to help you :santa2:
  • Is there a way to get the bank to tell me how much they owe me?, this isn't lazy on my part, I am just very confused about what I can and can't reclaim

    Cheers

Any charges relating to your bank account. Apart from charges that are in relation to a particular aspect like Advantage Gold from Nartest.

    Charges include.

    Going overdrawn
    D/D not paid
    Cheque bounced.

All charges that in the eyes of the OFT do not cost the price that they charge.

Does it really cost £36 to send you an automated letter to tell you you are ovwedrawn.
I all have learnt is from others on many sites.
    Seek legal help if unsure.
Dont pay Private Parking tickets - they are mere invoices.

    Hi

Thanks so much for this site but like lots of others I find this all very difficult to get right

Ive got all my statements on all accounts

I'm with HSBC (and hate them!)

Can I claim my OD arrangement fee and also notified fees / charges?

Thanks for any help in advance

    CAN BE CLAIMED

    Account misuse fee
    Cheque return fee
    Card misuse fee
    Unarranged borrowing fee
    Unauthorised overdraft fee
    Unpaid DD fee
    Unpaid cheque fee
    Unpaid standing order fee
    Exceeding Authorised Overdraft Limit
    Exceeding Unauthorised Overdraft Limit
    Direct Debit/Standing Order/Cheque returned fee
    Irregular fee
    Paid refferal fee
Total charges (HSBC personal accounts only, not business accounts)

    Credit Card/Store Cards/Catalogues

    Late payment fee
    Over limit fee

    CANNOT BE CLAIMED

    Cash Machine Withdrawal Fees (ATMs)
    Account Service Charges
    Service Fee / Annual Fee
Charges related to foreign currency transactions and conversions.
Monthly account fees on certain type of accounts (such as RBS Royalties)
    Normal overdraft interest charges<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

    Contractual interest

This is what you see on your bank statements charged by the bank when you go overdrawn. It appears on your statement as 'INTEREST', or 'INT'.

There are normally two different interest rates charged. A lower rate is charged when you are overdrawn, but still within your agreed overdraft limit. Under no circumstances can this interest be reclaimed. There is a higher rate of interest (up to 29.9%) charged when you go over your overdraft limit (unauthorised overdraft). This is a bit trickier to deal with. You cannot claim any of this interest if your spending has caused you to go over your overdraft limit, but you can claim this interest on any bank charges that have caused this. The problem with this is working out the interest only on the charges. It can be difficult to get right, and you have to be very accurate with your figures in case the bank at any stage challenges them. Generally, most people don't claim this interest.

As above, if the OD Arrangement fee is a single charge for organising a new OD then no but if it is a charge for going over your OD in any month, then yes.

    hey guys.

my gf just got a letter because she went overdrawn by a LAUGHABLE £0.64!!!

The charges are £15 and £6 per day with approx 10 days in every month of interest.

Personally if it was me I would go the bank (lloyds for those interested!) show them the letter, tell its a f**kin disgrace and threaten to switch account.

ive always done that with my bank (barclays -- who had reasonable reason to charge me, but they dropped them because of the threatening to leave) but ive never sworn at them ... merely coz theyve never charged me for being 64p overdrawn!! shouldnt there be a grace period?? so 3 days for overdrawn to be cleared?

im minded to write a letter to mr paul williams (yes its public knowledge now!) but my gf wants to go to the bank personally. any advice what to say?!

    Cheers
