Scented candles, perfume, coca cola, books...this list could be so exhaustive, I think I've a nerve to think of myself as 'money saving' at all.

Oh, and I hemorrhage gas too. Of the central heating kind, I should add:D

We've downshifted a lot of our grocery shopping but 3 things that we can't give up/downshift are Cravendale milk, Taylor's coffee and Diet Coke!

I like my luxuries, but there's nothing I can't live without, if I can't afford it, I get a cheaper version/go without... but I do love having nice nails and whenever I do have the spare money that's what I spend it on! I never feel like I look really good or finished without nice nails and since my own are so weak they can't grow without breaking and flaking I have to fork out for acryllics.
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!

I do have some luxuries that I can't do without but I tend to really stock pile them while they are on offer.
I can't cope with out Twinnings Lady Grey tea bags or Yorkshire tea. And decent expensive meat, I tend to get mine from the Butchers department at Bookers, which is as good as the local butchers but cheaper. But I mass buy, have just bought enough meat to get me through winter for £100, but as I was buying over a tenners worth of meat a week from the supermarket, its really not that much more expensive, if not cheaper!
Tresemme conditioner, I have fluffy hair and it seems to be the only thing that tames it, but is so expensive, but again tend to buy when on offer.
Defintely couldn't cope without the internet, espeically as I have a slightly strange sleep pattern as work evenings until about midnight.

Last one, sounds strange but I couldn't manage without buying records. I collect rock and metal records and they are my little treat, but I refuse to pay more than £2 for one. I don't buy them very often anymore as they are getting more expensive, but they make me happy.
Remember never judge someone that makes a mistake, because in six months time it may be you that makes the next mistake.

Fairy washing up liquid, cheaper stuff just doesn't work for me,I would also hate to lose my decent ground coffee. My DDs always buy me the 'nice stuff' as part of my Christmas present and I usually hoard it but enjoying a big pot on a Sunday morning when DD arrives at 11.00.a.m. for our coffee and cake (I make the cake myself anyway)I have a lovely tin of Fortnum & Masons coffee which I had given as a present as luckily lots of my friends know my passion for fresh coffee so I am saving that for a later date (probably Christmas)I would be hard put to drink instant although I do now and again have some Kenco.

  • Well I wouldnt say I would never do without these things but so far have managed to keep them:

Clarks shoes and boots (although I buy them less often)
    TV/Internet/Phone package
    Decent tea and coffee
Arm and Hammer toothpaste (usually get it on offer)
    Camping holidays
And activities for the kids (sports and music lessons)

Out of my life have gone: newspapers/magazines, books, wine, nights out, takeaways, expensive Christmas and birthday presents.

The car is not a luxury for us, we dont have public transport! And our window cleaner is great, £10 for 12 windows every 6 weeks or so.

I did try to convert to one from Lidl which I came to christen 'Columbian Shame'....horrendous stuff.

Love my Dingleberry :smileyheatoo, have cut down on the tv package but not sacrificed it totally.

Camping holidays ARE money saving, surely, compared to package holidays or staying in a cottage or gite? We go to the Netherlands and/or France for at least a month every summer and even with the ferry fare for us and the car, it still only costs a fraction of what 2 weeks in a hotel would.

And I still buy a lot of books, but they're either 3 for £1 from the local charity shop (which has two entire rooms full of books) or I get them second hand or at least heavily discounted from Amazon shops.
    Val.

True, but I suppose we could live without holidays altogether. Slightly off topic but I had this conversation with a friend recently about whether it was worth going on holiday if you had to do it on a really tight budget.

For me its worth going camping even if we cant afford to eat out or visit expensive attractions. We manage 2 or 3 trips a year on a very small budget but its great to get away.
