I don't think the employer "insist" they are coloured, but as everyone else is nicely turned out and polished with nails done I suppose there is pressure you should be too. And in corporate world it is very usual, first impression is most important and you are selling yourself as much as your skills at the end of the day.
And coloured nails are the easiest and fairly hassle free (apart from that 1 visit every month or so).
I gave mine up when I changed job and it would be very uneconomical to go to the girl who has done mine and I have seen some very badly done ones from people near my home and I tell you it is pain to constantly polish my nails and paint them and unpaint them... :-(
My dh works in a corporate environment, and this weekend visiting him I met a lot of his female colleagues and not one of them had gels...whether they were support staff or legal staff. In an international office in one of the most highly ranked departments of its type in the world. They are spotless and decently turned out though, and the support staff tend to be better dressed and turned out than the lawyers!
edit: not that I think its not acceptable to choose to have them ...I think people should do stuff that makes them happy if they can afford it. Its seems nails might be pretty affordable in a corporate setting.I'm just saying its not essential for those struggling, neat, clean, and natural is fine. At dreary social things I am often the only woman in the room whose got coloured fingernails when I paint mine (mine are my own though)

Hi all,
What a great thread! It's really interesting to see what other people can't live without, funny that some of them are the same
From my salary, there isn't a lot that I spend on myself (unless you count debt repayment!) I don't wear make up, I'm not really a girly girl, so I save money in that sense!
In our joint account, we have 30mb fibre Internet which is amazing! Other than that, it's take aways, but we are trying to reduce that, if only for our waist lines!DEBT FREE SINCE 25.07.14!

Ground coffee is rather more expensive than the instanto kind. But I maintain that instanto might be a hot drink but it's just not coffee as it should be. I'd rather drink plain tap-water than that. Mind you, if push came to shove I'd take up tea-drinking 24/7. One penny per teabag of Ty-Phoo in my local Pound Shop. At the moment I'm still drinking from my Approved Foods stock-pile (at 12p per 60 gramme sachet)
About the nails: when I did work in a corporate environment (not sales) it was usually the junior staff who had the fancy false talons. I don't care for them myself, I think they're very Non-U.0 -

this is it precisely, when i spend a day or two in the head offices of some large companies meeting Financial directors, chairmen and MD's, being a woman is hard enough, let alone a scruffy one :rotfl:
this is also why i have to have a few pieces of rather expensive jewellery (always gifts) nice hair (i pay £25 a cut and home colour) and always look V smart. i tend to mix next with matalan for work.... not one for designer clothing... more classic stuff really.DFW - Debt Free Date July 2013, LBM Oct 2011

Good quality toilet roll (I am a delicate soul)0

Sky, Alta Rica instant coffee, the odd chinese takeaway and bottle of wine, and decent bin bags - since coming on here I'm quickly discovering that most other things really can be done more cheaply0
-
Having my "bits" waxed (TMI? :rotfl:) and my eyebrows tinted. Could give up the wax if push comes to shove but wouldn't readily give up the tint.
Red wine:beer:I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Nearly everything went when I was paying back my debts - one of two things have crept back in now I'm back in the black:).
- Monthly massage - but only as I have a bad back and it helps keep everything moving. I did cut this to every 2nd month but was pretty much siezed solid by then
- Sky - switched to FreeSat when paying off debts but now have the Basic package:D
- Pets - they do cost a lot when I added it all up but they're worth every penny and wouldn't be without them (but it has stopped me getting more)
- Internet - I don't go out so it's my "social" things - I'd miss out on loads of money saving tips if I didn't have it & pet food etc is much cheaper bought online so I'm sure it pays for itself;)
