But when I read stuff like you posted I think of Chamberlain waving his peace treaty before WW2
Goodness that is exactly that is what came to my mind! Although it maybe because I am reading 'Winston's war' just now.0 -

The ITEM Club are an interesting bunch. They use the same computer modeling as the Treasury and generally call short term trends pretty well.
IIRC they were pretty bullish about the economy right through the mid 2000s when most economists were telling us that inflation was about to rocket and growth moderate.0 -
I like like most of the UK just want it over and done with. Lets hope that this self fulfilling prophecy is at last true!
As much as I too would like this to be over and done with, I have a horrible feeling that we will be saying exactly the same in another 10 years, with our double-dip recession having become a triple-dip, quadruple and so on."When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty." - Thomas Jefferson0 -
Just out of interest, is there anyone that goes along with the O/P.
I hope I am wrong and we will see next month, but I suspect we are still in recession and I have a feeling it might of got slightlty worse. Or it could be that it just feels worse because of the time it has dragged on.
As for the 3rd an 4th quarter there is a good chance we might get "THE EVENT" around then that myself and Michael Portilo keep whittling on about, then it is proper recession time.0 -

Yes why not? They're hardly predicting a boom - 0% growth this year and 1.6% next year.
Isn't it where most of us are? Up a bit or down a bit?
Wouldn't be too surprised to find that inflation comes in lower than predicted though.0 -

Why? The GDP figures for Q2 do not confirm that the article quoted by the OP is incorrect:
"According to the ITEM Club, the economy will return to growth over the final six months of the year, boosted by falling inflation and a pick-up in consumer spending."0 -
