Has anyone else noticed that the minute you even THINK about saving money - something breaks down or wears out and has to be fixed.

Is it some unknown law of life?

Could we circumvent it by thinking of saving money as "spending" - i.e. "I am going to spend £x into halifax etc"?:wall:

Big hugs from me too Nicki. I know its no consolation right now, but once you get straight and start saving, you will be better prepared for emergencies like this. Both of our cars need MOTing and servicing at the end of the month and we have a weeks holiday booked in a months time - tis our own fault, we didnt plan it very well.

    This is real money now.

A refund of a mortgage payment on a redeemed mortgage. Had a BACS payment in to the household account. looked at the amount and thought that is a mortgage payment. Can't understand it.

So ring up the mortgage company. Oh yes that was us. Why? well you paid on the 7th and redeemed on the 29th. And the redeemed value was before you made the payment on the 7th. So we had paid the whole lot off.

So have an extra £227 back this month. Think this will go away for Xmas. Food and Xmas pressies. Not that I will spend all of that on Xmas about half of it.

    So :T

((hugs)) nicki :(:( That's a real bummer!! If it's a result of the brang, any chance you can recoup that money from the other party?

Yes, elona, it does seem to be sod's law in that respect! One of the ways I'm looking at it is this: (Got to stay positive, right?)

In the past couple of weeks, I've had some unplanned/unexpected expenses. I've had to dip into my Charlie Chicken to pay for them, which depletes my PMS (pin money savings).
If I did not have any PMS to dip into, there is the potential that I would have to use the overdraft to absorb these extra's (or, heaven forbid, go overbudget on the CC!).

Result: My PMS is reduced BUT no increase on any potential debt!

Well done, Judi on your tenner!!

Shame we have just moved and taken on a bigger mortgage.

But hey ho every little helps.

Shame we are not totally mortgage free. Only another 18 years of drudge.

Not if I get my way pay it off slightly quicker than that.

  • I have just come across a website which may be of interest to sell or buy second hand books. To buy £3.75 incl postage and to sell your own £3.00 each and no fee unlike amazon.I am definitly going to use it for getting rid of my childrens books they never read. There is also a guide on how much you can charge for postage when selling. Good luck the website is www.greenmetropolis.com and they donate 5p to the woodland trust everytime you buy a book.

:hello: westwardbymanier thanks for posting that link - I shall look forward to delving into it (time allowing ;) )

Nipped into Sainsbury's on our way home on Saturday (el cheapo day out) and picked up a couple of bargains which also had *hidden* bargains attached :D

2x Pringles: original price - £1.38 reduced to 88p each ... at till a further 76p was taken off the pair!

Low Fat Hot X buns: 75p reduced to 45p per pack 6 - bought 4 packs for freezer. At the till, a further £1 was taken off the overall price!! 4@ 45p = £1.80 less £1 = 80p for 4 pks!

Virtual savings from above: £1 on the 2 X pringles + £1.20 on 4 x buns = £2.20 (virtual because, I wouldn't pay full price but was prepared to pay the reduced price)
    Actual Savings from above: Pringles - 76p + £1 buns = £1.76
(actual because, I was prepared for the reduced price, but didn't know about the till deductions thru multibuying!)

I still haven't done a bulk/monthly shop as such and I've checked my freezer/pantry and still have resources for 39 meals!!!!! (Could mean that I do not need to do a monthly shop *next* month either!).

    It certainly seems that way!

Just when I started a new system designed to make me add to my long-term savings whenever I got to a certain amount of spare cash, my (only) boots wore out (£40 to replace plus £4.75 to repair the new ones after getting the heels caught in a grating on the first day of wear!) and three weeks ago the tumble drier died, so going halves with my housemate that'll be about £120 each for a new one...

Two Christmases ago I'd just received cheques for £50 from my dad, and £30 from my mum - which is pretty much guaranteed income each Christmas and birthday, but is the only income I don't factor into my budget - when my telly blew up and Dad's money was instantly spent on a new one.
