Do you ask visitors to remove shoes?

MY OH and myself can't agree on this one. I think visitors/workmen should remove shoes when they enter someone's home - I do it automatically when I go to someone's house. My hall carpet is still in great condition after 23 years (I think, got it 2 years after moved in).

It's lasted so well because it is an expensive Brinton's carpet, which we couldn't afford now, not because we have asked visitors to take their shoes off.
