Watch out Maman and Marisco, you'll have some newbie telling you to 'get over yourself' . Now, what does that cliche actually mean?

    Need rolleyes! ;)

I think it sounds like some way of proceeding around someones home without ones feet touching the floor. :). I envisage this as a rolypoly tupe manouvre.

What amazes me in this thread, is how many have white or cream carpets with small kids!! That is the last color I'd have got when my kids were little! I always go around barefoot in the house, but that has nothing to do with carpets, I just prefer being barefoot. It wouldn't occur to me to ask visitors to take off their shoes, if they want to though they can do, I'm not fussed either way. I would like to know though, how people with dogs and cats reconcile this obsession with "germs"!! :D

There was a poster not that long ago who told us how she had a white carpet and pale sofas so the poor dog was just never allowed in the living room, it had to watch the family through a baby gate!

It's really interesting to see different perspectives. I would never dream of wearing shoes indoors - it just seems complete wrong, like wearing an outdoor coat or scarf inside! If I go to someone else's house, I take my shoes off, and everyone who ever comes to my house takes theirs off automatically without being asked (and no, we don't have a shoe rack or a line of shoes by the door or anything to subtly indicate we would like shoes removed). I have never really thought about the reasons behind not wearing shoes indoors - it's not a worry about dirt or germs or anything - it's just the way things are! I can honestly say until reading this thread, it never crossed my mind that there were people in the world who wore outdoor shoes indoors :) you learn something new every day!

I think it's the germ/bacteria obsessed folk who need to "get over themselves" :D God's teeth, I'm wondering how I'm still here, and how ever did my kids reach adulthood?? We used to have the most marvellous burgundy carpet in the lounge when the kids were little. It had everything dropped on it, all sorts of soft drinks, a whole range of alcoholic drinks, tea, coffee, the cat and dog had "accidents" on it, from both ends. Kids were in and out with their shoes on, bikes had been wheeled over it.

I dropped a whole Sunday lunch plate on it once, the dog thought it was her birthday!! The cat was a brilliant "mouser" and often left dead rats as a present for me on it. My kids never had "bugs" and neither did their mates. By rights our carpet should have been in a "Level 4" biohazard lab!! :D And the best thing of all, sod all showed up on it!!! I've never had a carpet like it since. It was quite expensive at the time, but well worth the money. It's no wonder kids these days continually have these "bugs", they have no immunity to a few germs and the odd bacteria!!

I'm in and out all day taking the dogs for toilet breaks, I keep my comfy shoes on in between or I'd spend half my life fastening and unfastening shoelaces!

It never occurs to me to take them off unless they're muddy or uncomfortable.

That's shocking! What the hell's the point in having a dog if you're going to keep the poor thing a "prisoner"? My cats (I've got 2) go where they want. There are far worse things in life than a few cats hairs on the floor/bed/chair/sofa/table/tv/bookshelves zzzzzzzzzzzzzz :D
  • We live on a farm and wellies/outdoor shoes are banned from the rest of the house apart from the kitchen! We have too many workers coming and going for meals into the kitchen to ask them to remove their footwear I'm afraid.

I do not allow outdoor footwear in the rest of the house though, I spend enough time cleaning the kitchen floor
Never look down on anyone unless you are bending to help them up.....

Oh and I are here at home in slippers. Our elderly friend and neighbour has just called for a cuppa, still in her chapel gear.

Can't imagine asking her to take her shoes off. It's a thing one does in one's own home ( unless shoes are muddy , of course)

We always take our shoes off when we come home although if we were staying on non-carpeted floors (ie hallway, kitchen) it wouldn't matter. I always ask visitors to take their shoes off no matter who they are (this includes the local policeman we had round recently) no one has ever said no or looked surprised. If they didn't want to then they wouldn't be welcome in my living room, or to go upstairs for any reason. I don't care if people don't like it quite frankly, we bought lovely, expensive carpets with our hard earned money and 12 yrs on they are still in almost brand new condition, and that's the way we'd like to keep them ;)
