We have a little wooden sign - 'please remove your Jimmy Choos'. We have a cream carpet in our front room. I would rather my MIL kept her shoes on tbh, her feet make me feel a bit queasy :rotfl:But we have a pretty informal house, no airs and graces here ;) so if someone ignores it I wouldn't say anything.

I have laminate flooring throughout my downstairs so don't really mind if people leave their shoes on unless they are really muddy/wet of course. I always take my shoes off in other peoples homes but what really annoys me is when someone won't let people wear shoes in their home but they don't take their own shoes off in others homes

So all of you wear your outdoor shoes in the house, regardless of your flooring type?

    How very queer!

How is it queer? I find the concept of taking one's shoes off to enter someone's house 'queer' and I don't know about other people, but I'd always been led to believe that the concept of doormats was to wipe one's shoes clean before entering.

As it is, I have an outdoor mat and boot scrape and then my hallway has wall to wall fitted coir matting to further clean shoes whilst coming in.

If anyone entering looks like they're about to remove their shoes (or asks if I'd like them to), I simply say 'no' and they're welcome to wipe their feet on the coir if they wish.

I'd also add that I love being barefoot....and that means traipsing round the garden barefoot too. If I need to go out and I'm in a rush I shove my bare feet into a pair of Crocs or some other easily-cleaned footwear and head out. Now if I were to enter someone's house and they told me to remove my footwear I could almost guarantee that my feet would be dirtier than the shoes I've been asked to remove as I don't bother washing them for each and every outing...but rather in the shower each night before bed.

Off topic but someone I used to know asked for his egg to be freshly cooked in a motorway cafe. They refused so he asked if they'd cook Prince Charles a fresh egg if he was coming. When they said they would he said 'well he's not coming so I'll have his'. :rotfl:

In my own home I wear slippers. When I visit family and friends I know well I take my "best" slippers with me. I keep a spare pair in the car - that way there is no embarrassment about "naked" feet.

When I'm all dolled up and don't want to spoil the look, I have several pairs of those pretty soft satin sequinned slip on slipper/shoes which I only wear indoors. I have them in black, silver, white with multi-coloured sequins, bronzy gold, so I have lots of choice to match my outfits. The added bonus is that they are very comfortable especially if you have to stand all evening. They always receive lots of compliments too.

All it takes is a little bit of forethought and planning and then you are prepared.

What a daft argument. Would a celebrity that you had not known informally every visit your home, probably not.

Would they be prepared to replace the carpets which cost a fair bit if they made a mess of them ? Until then everyone takes their shoes off.

Don't know about you lot but as a child I was always encouraged to go barefoot as much as possible and certainly did not wear shoes in the home.

The only time I'd take my shoes off would be if I'd been walking in snow or mud.

If I am staying over with a friend or family I take a pair of slippers to wear, as i would at home.

BTW: I do not 'traipse all over' anyone's house. I go where I am invited.

Well actually, although my children always removed their shoes in the house - as did their father and I, the condition of the flooring was always (and still is) less important than the well-being of my family and friends.

I will never ever see the need to be friends with people who consider their possessions more precious than their friends and family.

And, for the record, nowadays (I'm late 60s) I need to wear shoes/supportive footwear in order to be able to walk - so it really is super that I won't be visiting you!
