I became very well acquainted with Fred, the CPR dummy, last night and am feeling much more confident that I could cope with an emergency. Good job really as I might get to try it out shortly... one of the Fortunate Hens has, unfortunately, got Sour Crop :(. I noticed Miss S was having a bit of trouble breathing this morning so a quick trip to the vet (and £33) later and I am fully equipped with antifungals and antibiotics. The antibiotics will be fine as they just go in the water. I'm hoping I can tempt Miss S to eat some bread soaked in the anti-fungals as, otherwise, I'm going to have to syringe it down her throat every day for the next 7 days. Anyone who has had to open the beak of a chicken will know why this fills me with dread - they are not known for their co-operation :rotfl:

My MS activity today was mainly chicken related:
    • gave the coop a thorough clean out and replaced all the Aubi0$£ with £a$ichick. Like it so far - it smells lovely, doesn't blow about in the wind, fits perfectly in the bedding bin and it doesn't give me a hernia to lift the pack. The chickens gave it a good tasting but spat it out so it doesn't look like they will be tempted to eat it (I suspect eating Aubi0$£ has contributed to Miss S's current trouble)
    • I didn't get to have any Rhubarb & Pear Crumble last night as I was in a rush to get to the CPR training so had some with my lunch today - there's still enough for another two servings each!
    • reconciled the bank statements - all agrees :T
    • drew some cash out to pay for the logs and the window cleaner plus a little extra in case we need to contribute anything to dinner on Saturday
    • 60p for Mr Marmite
    • a Prawn & Egg Stir Fry from the meal plan on the cards for dinner tonight
Yay! - it's the weekend. Have a good one.

  • Good luck dosing Miss S!

I usually find it's ok for the first day or-so whilst they're feeling poorly but once the medicine starts working it's certainly a 2-person job.

I was supposed to dose my Miss Dorothy with an anti-inflammatory daily for 7 days because she was lame... by Day 3 she was running too fast for me to catch her... her way of telling me she was better :rotfl:

  • Miss S was surprisingly well behaved when taking her medicine today. I wrapped her in a towel so she didn't struggle so much and managed to syringe the whole dose into her mouth bit by bit. She didn't like it at all but it wasn't as much as a trial as I expected. Having said that, I was sitting on the back door step in glorious sunshine - I may not be so laid back on Monday when I'm struggling with an unco-operative hen in the pouring rain :rotfl:

I took advantage of the unexpected sunshine in my MS today:
    • gave the woodchip in the chicken run a good rake over and a liberal sprinkling of disinfectant powder
    • £a$ichick looks like it's going to be a good buy - stayed very clean and dry so super easy to muck out this morning. Muck bin is now full though so I need to find a neighbour with a needy compost bin
    • spent 40 minutes on the 'phone with HMRC this morning trying to sort Mr F's tax out - he's still being overcharged
    • Mr F is in the garage (surprise, surprise) doing some repairs to my Landy - clutch seals (I'm told)
    • more rhubarb crumble after lunch today - still a portion each left for tomorrow
    • roasted the remaining rhubarb with some lemon juice, honey and ginger ready for the freezer - the whole house smells delicious :)
    • went foraging and collected 850 grams of blackberries which are now washed, bagged and in the freezer
Sitting down with a coffee now before I start getting ready to go out later. Our neighbour is taking us out for an Indian as a thank you for some repairs Mr F did on his E-type :j The entertainment budget lives to fight another day.

    Happy Saturday

  • Glad to hear that Miss S behaved herself :)
    Fingers crossed for tomorrow morning!

I also went foraging this afternoon:
    8 kg crab apples
    1 kg blackberries
    1 kg elderberries
    1.5 kg sloes

1 batch of hedgerow jelly on the go, another batch and 2 batches of spiced crab apple jelly + sloe gin (sloes in freezer overnight) + pontack sauce to be made tomorrow. The jellies and sloe gin are for Christmas hampers (along with lemon curd, spicy pear pickle, Christmas puddings, cookies and candied orange peel).

Hope you enjoyed the Indian meal. Have you tried any of Anjum Anand's recipes? If not, I highly recommend them - everything we've made from her cookbooks has been delicious.

  • Hi Mrs F,
Loving your diary, a real joy to read with a good balance of saving and spending.
  • I have nowhere to forage, living in a densely packed suburb. I did get a pack of blackberries from MrT for a quid and have made the pink ginger cordial now. Put in too many blackberries, that the cordial is almost purple  I have a feeling that I'll be the only one at home sampling it. :)

Bet it will taste delicious though.
