  • I have tons of root ginger so I will give that recipe a go, thanks x.

Do the alder logs smell nice? It's a magnificent day in Scotland today, so i'm off for a bike ride.

I discovered the recipe after ordering 1kg of root ginger by mistake instead of 1 piece! Still have loads in the freezer.

The alder logs smell wonderful. Apparently alder is used a lot for smoking salmon because of its sweet scent.

Hope you have a good day out. After a long period of unseasonably warm weather here in Kent we've got torrential rain today.

  • That's why i've got so much ginger root too. I'm glad to know it's not just me, who does these things! I didn't realise it could be frozen though, so thanks for that tip.

    Enjoy your alder logs x.

This is the one I usually use and, yes, very glad to see the back of it. I'm sure Mr F will commit another faux pas before too long though. :rotfl:

Thanks for the link - it sounds delish. I'll be keeping an eye out for the £1 for a bag of root ginger that my local market sometimes has on offer!

  • Yes - my July claim has finally come through :j. Now I just need Mr F's pay to hit the bank account so that I can do the monthly money shuffle.

    MS for today:
    • cupboard lunch and dinner as Mr F is away today
    • 20p for Mr Marmite
    • 2 little PADS to tidy up the bank accounts
    • most of the day spent doing admin work
    • not an NSD as I had to order some new bedding and mixed corn for the chooks. I usually use chopped hemp but you can only get this in 20kg bags which are a bit tricky to handle. It also takes a long time to use up which increases the risk of it getting soggy from condensation. So I'm trying a new type of bedding this time called Easichick. It's made from recycled wood, comes in 10kg bags and has got very good reviews. Anyone here used it?
    • no heating or log burner - just hasn't felt quite cold enough. Although I have resorted to wearing socks during the day and have taken a hot water bottle to bed with me the last two nights - I am such a glamour puss :rotfl:
Must bottle the ginger cordial tomorrow - it's only supposed to steep overnight :o A day of ironing is planned tomorrow whilst catching up on the week's TV - Downton, Parades End, The Paradise... bliss.

    Hope your week's going well

If you do try the Easichick bedding, please can you let me know what it is like? I am using straw at the moment - previously I used woodchip, but that turned to horrible mud in all the rain

    Hi Dawn

I have woodchip in the run at the moment but that's covered so it helps to keep the rain off. I've been using Aubi0$£ in the coop where they sleep and nest and that's been really good. It just comes in such huge packs. I'll let you know how I get on.

  • I appear to have walked into chicken chatter!

Back to ginger cordial... what bottles do you use? I guess it has to be glass so you can place in oven first. Hmm... am I going to have to invest in glass bottles just to make it?!?!

  • Hi FS, Thanks for the recipe link for pink ginger cordial. I have a big pack of root ginger in my fridge languishing in there. But, I don't have the blackberries. So I won't get the pink colour. I will try on a small bottle first and see how it goes. Thanks :T
