  • Mr F has been called out with the 4x4 Response Team today. Yalding has flooded again :( They needed a vehicle that could wade through deep water to rescue someone stranded in the church. I feel so sorry for the people who live there. We came back through the village on our way home from the North and the waterline was half way up the ground floor windows of the houses. We could see the electricity was still off because the traffic and street lights weren't working. People's sodden belongings were piled up by the side of the street. They must have had a miserable Christmas and are likely to flood several times again in January if the forecast holds true. We did look at a lovely house in Yalding when we first moved here but, knowing that the area was prone to flooding, decided against it. Thank goodness! The houses are adapted to cope with flooding but not to this extent.

My first 'normal' day of the year has started well:
    • 21p liberated from Mr F's change dish this morning for the Marmit£ jar
    • had to buy Mr F a new electric toothbrush as his existing one died of old age over Christmas. I shopped around and bought from J0hn L£wis in the end. B00t$ were the same price for the same brush but were saying this was with 50% off in the sale. Elsewhere the non-sale price was similar so I think they are being a bit naughty. Bought a new diary insert for my Fil0fax at the same time - Mr F said I should use my 'phone but I just can't get used to a virtual diary
    • have food planned for the day and will come in under my recommended calories
    • managed to do an hour's tidying in the garden as it's such a beautiful day... plus it counts as my 200 calories of exercise today :A
    • Waitr0$£ have just delivered. There were 12 substitutions today  All organic veg for non-organic so I suspect the weather is causing problems. I can live with non-organic for a week so not a problem. It also meant a cheaper shop - £17.20 under budget which I'll transfer to the savings
    • D£hlia$ Meatballs in Goulash Sauce with Tagliatelle from the meal plan for supper tonight. Should be enough for another meal later in the week.
So not a bad day at all. Just need to get Mr F home safe and sound - I suspect much mud will accompany him!

Hope everyone stays safe in the next round of storms.

  • Just seen Mr F being interviewed on BBC South East News about how they are helping out in Yalding! This is the 3rd time he's been on TV... does that make me a WAG?

Faith in humanity shaken: whilst evacuating people from their homes in Yalding, Mr F was followed by our local traveller community who are going into the empty houses and looting. Talk about kicking someone when they're down.

Faith in humanity restored: the local Chip Shop owner provided free fish and chips to all the professionals and volunteers who turned up to help out.

Feeling a lot of love for my home at the moment. It has kept us safe, warm and dry throughout all the bad weather.

  • It's been a mixed day today:
    • lots of chores achieved
    • discovered the temperature valve in our shower has gone :( However, there's a 12 year guarantee on the parts so it's being replaced free of charge and Mr F can manage the repair :)
    • builder friend turned up to refit the mechanic's pit in the garage. It cracked whilst he was drilling the concrete :( But he can repair it :) The water table seems to have risen though - even to the top of the hill where we are  That may cause us some problems but we'll know more tomorrow when the pit is raised
    • booked the truck in for an MOT. That will be £45
    • booked in for gym classes for the next two weeks
    • ordered some retainer cleaner - £13.40
    • stuck to my recommended calories and fat. A little below the recommended exercise calories though
    • Griddled Tuna with Parsnip & Potato Puree and Green Beans from the meal plan for supper.
Normality has definitely returned in the Fortunate household. I might have a little of the January blues - must plan something to look forward to.

  • The blues are probably withdrawal from the high sugar/fat/alcohol diet from the last couple of weeks!! I am still munching my way through the mince pies. I cannot diet with the weather like this.....

You're probably right southerndave. We still have some chocolate coins left but I am bravely resisting them! Homemade Spiced Vegetable Soup for lunch today so I'm hoping that will be comfort food enough. It's not great dieting weather but I don't think it's going to improve for sometime and I can't wait that long :rotfl:

  • Hi Fortune, I use denture tablets for my sons retainer, they are about £1 per tube & work just as well, don't know if that helps you :)

Hi MissOptimistic. I did think about those but my retainer is clear and the denture tablets can cause staining after a while. I only have to wear it a couple of times a week so it doesn't work out too expensive - it's just vanity :o

    Thanks for the tip

  • Ah, I didn't realise they could cause staining, but then my son only has to wear them at night anyway.
I have loved reading your diary by the way :)
