I didn't pack the bag for me until 37 weeks bikelesschick, and I still have to put things in at the last minute eg. water bottles, maternity notes, birth plan etc - have a checklist in the drawer so know what is missing from it still.

Thanks for that sexymouse. I've bought all the missing bits but some are clothes for me and I'd like to wash them before I pack them so I don't think my bag will be ready tonight after all. Good idea about the checklist! I'm going to do that as well. Thanks!

Where do you watch OBEM? Online? I must confess I have never watched it! :o

I am trying to do a list of basic stuff I will need, so I can start shopping around and looking for bargains. Does this sound ok to you? Am I missing something? Am I buying something that is not necessary?

    For out and about:
    Pram & rain cover [done]
    car seat [done]
    changing bag [done]
    footmuff
little coat for baby? - if your baby is going to be born in the winter, a cardi or coat/jacket will be essential

    Feeding:
3 bottles - personally I don't think you need that many. I'd only bought one but as I had a bogof from boots, ended up with 2.
    Formula (for emergencies)
sterilizer - if you're planning on bf, you don't need this as you'd only use it occasionally, it'd be handy but some milton instead will be fine
    muslin cloths [done]
    breast pads
    breast pump
    cream for nipples

    Sleeping:
    moses basket
    cot bed (eventually)
moses basket second bedding??? <--- where do I buy this? most shops will sell it, mothercare, M&Ps, boots, etc

    Bath:

    Bath or "spongemat" or both.
    soft baby sponge
    water thermometer
baby shampoo/soap <--- can I use any hypoallergenic sensitive one?
    baby hairbrush
    baby towel [done]
    baby nail clippers
    baby oil [done]
    talc powder [done]

    healthy and clean baby:
    Digital thermometer
    nappies [done]
    changing mat [done]
    baby wipes
    dummy / pacifier

    For hospital bag:
    pregnancy notes
    2 nighties [done]
    Dressing gown [done]
    slippers [done]
    lip balm
    snacks and drinks
    straws to help me drink
camera & music [done, in phone]
hairband /hair stuff to get it out of the way
    comfy outfit for going home
    nursing bra
toiletries, maternity pads and breast pads
    toothbrush & toothpaste
    disposable knickers [done]
towel? <-- i read this in several websites, wouldn't the hospital have some? - not all of them do. I know I have to bring one with me myself.

    For after birth:
tea tree oil / witch hazel /arnica for healing
    3 x baby sleepsuits/vests + socks + hat + gloves
    baby clothes and toy
    baby blanket for leaving hospital

    For home, to have ready:
    a few frozen meals
buy basics such as toilet paper, bread, milk, cereal, pads, etc

    Not essential, but wanted:
    baby carrier
    baby monitor [done]

You may want to consider a room thermometer (you can get a phillips water and room thermometer for about 12 quid from amazon I think),mittens so baby can't scratch themselves, sudocrem (just a sample size), muslin squares/towels/flannels, nappy sacks. Sorry if I've put things that are on your list. I've just looked at mine and tried to see what wasn't on yours.Bare in mind that my essentials may not match yours and vice-versa.

Question: someone is going to lend me their tens machine but I'll need to get the pads. Do they have to be the same make?

martafdz, don't use talc on babies. Not recommended.

They can need to relocate it even if your skinny hun, sometimes they don't take or it can only affect one side of your body etc.

Sorry if it seemed like I was snapping over the steroid thing, I'm a walking hormone today and should probably go away. But yeah they normally give two steroid jabs if you labour either naturally or section before term to mature bubs lungs.
Oh really? So two steroid jabs? At least now I know and if I have to give birth via c-section before term (I HOPE NOT), I'll know what to expect.

You're not snappy Ikkle. You are really helpful and you always have time to reply to our silly comments.

How are you? Hope your baby will be here on time. Can't believe is not long now and you'll have your baby :j

It's on the feminine side of unisex but I'd have put F in it when he was newborn. If you want truly unisex, it's best just to get all white for the newborn stuff. Plus people will buy you stuff once you've had him/her and, trust me, that won't be unisex. I got loads of baby blue, obviously boy stuff for F once he'd popped (was dragged) out. Not my cup of tea really but it's still nice of people to bother.

So today I told Moon that I'm not going to answer the home phone at all this week, as anyone who needs to contact me personally can call my mobile (I can screen the calls) or leave a message on the answer-phone. My Mum called this afternoon to see if there was any news (we are meant to be going to dinner tomorrow evening and I've already told my Dad that we will let them know if we can't make it), and Moon answered and told her that we'd let them know if there were any news. Then this evening MIL called to see if there was any news  and to tell us that she's off on her holidays. :jMoon told her (we discussed this last night) that we'd put a note through her door to let her know one way or another when she gets home on Friday and not to call us - her reaction - "oh well I thought I'd call!" to which he said, "No don't call us we'll let you know and we just want to be left alone for a couple of weeks." :T Thank goodness I had that conversation with him and he actually took it all in. Just hope he sticks to his guns as well when she returns and turns her away if she does try to visit.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

  • I'd put a boy in that Rups! I fact to me it is more boyish than girly! Funny how people's opinions on things like that vary. It's hard buying unisex though- my hubby swore yellow things were girly but to me they're not!
