Where do you watch OBEM? Online? I must confess I have never watched it! :o

I am trying to do a list of basic stuff I will need, so I can start shopping around and looking for bargains. Does this sound ok to you? Am I missing something? Am I buying something that is not necessary?

    For out and about:
    Pram & rain cover [done]
    car seat [done]
    changing bag [done]
    footmuff
    little coat for baby?

    Feeding:
    3 bottles
    Formula (for emergencies)
    sterilizer
    muslin cloths [done]
    breast pads
    breast pump
    cream for nipples

    Sleeping:
    moses basket
    cot bed (eventually)
moses basket second bedding??? <--- where do I buy this?

    Bath:

    Bath or "spongemat" or both.
    soft baby sponge
    water thermometer
baby shampoo/soap <--- can I use any hypoallergenic sensitive one?
    baby hairbrush
    baby towel [done]
    baby nail clippers
    baby oil [done]
    talc powder [done]

    healthy and clean baby:
    Digital thermometer
    nappies [done]
    changing mat [done]
    baby wipes
    dummy / pacifier

    For hospital bag:
    pregnancy notes
    2 nighties [done]
    Dressing gown [done]
    slippers [done]
    lip balm
    snacks and drinks
    straws to help me drink
camera & music [done, in phone]
hairband /hair stuff to get it out of the way
    comfy outfit for going home
    nursing bra
toiletries, maternity pads and breast pads
    toothbrush & toothpaste
    disposable knickers [done]
towel? <-- i read this in several websites, wouldn't the hospital have some?

    For after birth:
tea tree oil / witch hazel /arnica for healing
    3 x baby sleepsuits/vests + socks + hat + gloves
    baby clothes and toy
    baby blanket for leaving hospital

    For home, to have ready:
    a few frozen meals
buy basics such as toilet paper, bread, milk, cereal, pads, etc

    Not essential, but wanted:
    baby carrier
    baby monitor [done]
    Quit smoking *1st January 2010*

    13/12/2012, baby girl!!!

awhh thanks guys. :) glad we chose something nice and me and dh agreed on lol. so when yuo have the basket by the bed, do you just put it on chairs or something?

started packing my hospital bag today so feel quite good. think i may get a few bigger vests i case i cant fit into the ones i have got lol. eek. imagine that!feel a bit better that can start ticking off my list now. my mum kindly got us the cot bed and furniture from mothercare so its allll hapening. :)

aida. i am now. i am quite short and when i put on weight i look bad. lol. the weight has crept up and i am now in the 80's (kilograms i mean lol). so i am hoping the midwife appointment goes well. :)

Rups that's the basket I got, and I did get the stand too. You don't need a stand if you don't want. In my case I have kids running around/dancing who would trip on the moses if it was left on the floor, and sit on it if it was on the sofa, so it is very necessary for me.

Your list looks good marta. I thought I had everything then looking at that I've realised I've forgotten to buy a toy or comforter. I got so carried away with the practical stuff I forgot all about cute fun bits!

marta, apparently you don't need any toiletries at first for the baby, just water. Also talc not recommended anymore as it's bad for their lungs & known carcinogenic I think it was.

marta you will need to get cotton wool to use with water to change baby with initially as they advise against using any wipes etc when they are newborn as their skin is very sensitive to additional chemicals in wipes and cleansers etc. I was told on the newborn thread that the best to get is the large cottonwool pads rather than cotton wool balls or pleats as balls are too small to handle much and the pleats tend to stick to the skin. Also have you got a nappy bag? If you get the Boots one - you get it free if you buy newborn Pampers I think it was, there is a travel changemat in that that could be useful to have downstairs so you don't have to keep on carrying bubs upstairs to change.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

  • hello ladies, just popping on quickly to ask if someone would mind updating for the list for me - baby boy born Thursday 20th sept - but I would ask that those of you who know the name please dont post it anywhere over here, thanks !

(Whilst you are on the subject of hospital bags), I wasnt in hospital for very long but did find i had massively overpacked on baby clothes - he only wore the one vest/sleepsuit. Nappies I took a pack of Huggies and only used 2. Maternity pads I packed a pack of 10 but had actually used half of those during labour so ran out. I didnt wear the nightdress i packed, I laboured in the vest top i wore to the hospital and took my bottom half off.

It was a pain having the extra bags and bits and being transferred from delivery to the ward and then from ward to car home, the extra food we took was a godsend though when i was first taken over to the ward after having him, we were given toast but i was still needing munchies and breakfast wasnt until 8am.

Will sit and do my birth story later, hopefully.

final thought, it will be ten times more painful than you imagine and ten times more magical :D

PS - happy boldie SM :j:j

Even if you're intending to BF, I'd recommend getting a bottle or sippy cup, a way of sterilising (milton fluid and a bucket is fine) and a small bottle of already made-up formula (SMA do titchy bottles of first milk).

When you're at the hospital with a midwife helping you latch your baby on each feed, it's not so bad. When you get home it's nice to have that back-up. One night in the first few days at home I couldn't get Freddie to feed at all - if it hadn't have been for the formula, he'd have had nothing to eat, and more importantly, drink for hours :(
