  • bezzyk - I haven't done NCT but did do the NHS classes. I think each area is different for the nhs, but I have had 2 hours breastfeeding class, plus about another hour in another class discussing the pros and cons of BF vs FF, so I don't feel I missed out there.

Most of my friends who live elsewhere have said NCT is basically a great but expensive way to make friends, they have not mentioned much about the content of the classes. I know me and OH are way to shy to actually interact that much so we didn't bother. I have made friends from yoga and will get out to coffee mornings etc if I am feeling lonely. I suppose it depends totally on the group of people you meet and how sociable they are

Hey everyone. Haven't managed to read back but congrats to anyone who has given birth and welcome to any newbies. :)

Dexter is now at the kicking me in the ribs stage. Boy does it knock me for six!

I'm 25+5 and have only put on the weight of the baby so far and I have to have extra growth scans because my BMI is low but apparently some people don't put on that much weight with their babies so I wouldn't worry too much. :)

Also, is it jut me, or is alot of maternity clothing really drab and boring? :( We're going away to an Anniversary thing next month and I want a nice outfit to wear but the maternity clothes just look boring. :(

More scans!! Yay :) I don't know what I've put on - I don't think too much but they're not weighing me and we don't have a scale. You also said your b00bs haven't grown yet either didn't you, so probably just your metabolism is a bit different. I definitely have bigger boobs and I think slightly bigger bum (pre maternity bottoms are tighter but might also just be that they are sitting funny due to the bump) but aside from the bump don't look bigger.

Ugh I have been having constant period pains since last night. I'm wondering if this is the beginning of things happening?

It'll be nice for you getting the extra scans LadyM. You're right not to worry about the weight, there seem to be a few people who have put on no weight and everything is going fine. I had only really gained a bump and boobs up until 32 weeks, but in the last couple of weeks I've started to look generally large. Even my mum said I'd ballooned.

I wonder how Kitten is getting on? I keep checking hoping for an update from her.

And rjh I was just thinking this morning and realised your boy is literally twice the weight that my daughter was! I can't even imagine how you managed to push him out naturally, you are one brave lady!!

  • Elisabeth lots of other lovely ladies have already posted about exercise, so forgive me if you already have enough info! I am a self confessed exercise freak and I was so ill in my first trimester that I couldn't train at all and I hated it! I managed to go back in my second tri, but took the intensity and frequency right down; I also teach Zumba and did this until the end of June (about six months pregnant) and only stopped because I didn't think it was fair to the rest of the class that I couldn't demo body rolls and some other hip based moves! I stopped doing any type of training a couple of weeks ago (around 36 weeks) as I haven't been sleeping brilliantly and so needed to rest up whenever I could. It is important to keep active during pregnancy and there are studies which show that it does help for an "easier" labour; HOWEVER, I do get really worried when I hear of fitness instructors telling people that they trained right up to when they went into labour; this is irresponsible of them! Your ligaments stretch in pregnancy - your body is preparing to to push out a baby after all - so continuing to do activities such as step or running is risky. People may feel fine, but they do not know the damage they could be potentially doing at that stage! There is also the risk of overheating - a big no-no in pregnancy - so I would say that high impact sports are out. Your best bet is to continue with low impact things such as walking and swimming. These won't place stress on your joints but will keep you fit. Hope this hasn't come across as patronising or anything, it's just that I was adamant that I was going to train right up until the last minute but having looked into the subject a bit more and now that I actually understand what it means to be pregnant (as this is my first!) I have had to change my views and be a bit more practical. It really does kill me not to do anything, and I will be honest and say that I cannot wait to get back to training, but even then it will be gradual return in a managed manner so as not to do any injury!
bellola think you can have period type pains for a while hun, so not really sure! my LO is def pressing down into my cervix - I am so hoping that he is going to put in an appearance next week! Getting very excited now!
Ikkle Hope your ankle is ok and fur baby is settling in!
Twinkle I am very jealous of your OH, can you loan him out so he can give a few pointers to mine please?

Hey ladies, Have a question for those who are further on than me. What is your opinion on the nct classes vs the nhs? My oh is dead set against the nct, his view is why pay for something which is free on the nhs. I know it's expensive at £245 but I was quite keen especially for the breastfeeding class and the social side of it.

    TIA
    Bezzy

Whereabouts are you hun? I do think that this is a lot of money to fork out (I have the same view as your OH to be honest!) but I also understand that you want to get the right info. I have heard that the NCT classes tend to be biased towards one thing or another and don't give a rounded view of all options (Breastfeeding and bottle, diff types of pain relief etc). The classes I went to were not NHS (as our hospital doesn't so them anymore and the free ones were at stupid times during the day and OH's couldn't attend!) but we paid about £40 for 4 sessions and the info they gave us was very informative and balanced. It's worth looking around and seeing what is in your area and also what other people thought of classes that they have attended.

Bezzy K - We really loved our NCT classes - they were very balanced in terms of breastfeeding/formula feeding, although they were angled towards as natural a childbirth as possible (most midwives try to encourage this now anyway), but did discuss assisted deliveries. The NCT do offer discounts to people on low incomes (not sure if this would apply to you) so it may be worth looking into that before making a decision. We couldn't attend the NHS ones cos Moon worked when they were on, and as these were evening classes it was ideal. We did go to one NHS evening session on active birth and water births that was combined with a hospital tour, but it didn't really tell us anything we hadn't heard at the NCT classes on the subject.
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

I'm sure our NCT classes are cheaper than that, it seems to vary quite a bit by location though (and also the structure). We have one a week for a good few weeks, in the evening. Not started them yet though, first one is two weeks' time. I've not managed to get details on the NHS ones near me yet although I'm trying to contact the hospital. I'd like to do a tour of the labour ward etc at least on the NHS. I think the NCT ones depend a lot on the person giving the course too, mine will be run by the same lady I'm doing pregancy yoga with (by chance), I suspect a lot of freedom is given to the presenters and you'll of course get their view on things, and it's probably coloured by the local NCT's branch view too.
