How they can call themselves budget airlines  when you have to pay for every single thing!!!

This is getting crazy and if they continue like this people will choose different ways to travel. I really hope all this so called budget airlines would go bankrupt!!!

I used to fly with Wizzair a lot but stopped about 4 years ago as they prices are getting higher every year!! Plus getting the same ideas as Ryanair where you have to pay for everything!!

Whats the point when you get nice cheap flight and end up with paying double the money by the time you finish booking your flight o the web!!! I HAVE JUST ONE WORD - RIDICULOUS!!!!

The point is, not everyone does add on a load of stuff that "doubles" the cost of the flight. The biggest charge I've ever had on a budget airline is a £6 payment fee.

If you want full-service, your best bet is often to book onto a full-service airline. If you want no-frills, your best bet is often to book onto a no-frills airline.

I honestly cannot understand how such a simple concept is still so hard for some people to grasp! I don't walk into Asda demanding that they change their food so it matches M&S' quality, I go to M&S. It's no different...

We're talking here about hand baggage charges. If US airline Spirit is a precedent of likely charges in the future, this could easily double the cost of a flight. Unless you're travelling on a day trip, it's hard to fly without any hand baggage.

I don't understand your comparison there.

If you want an 800g loaf of Asda bread then you buy an 800g loaf of Asda bread, 800g of Asda bread is the same weight as 800g of M&S bread but uses superior ingredients/processes.

Airlines like Jet2 and Ryanair charge for online check-in. How is that justified? You're already taking the cheap inferior option (compared to a check-in desk) and then you get a surcharge for it!

Some of the business travellers are the ones without the large cabin baggage or the hold baggage and they are the ones that are more likely to buy last minute or select a flexible ticket option meaning they already pay a lot more than the leisure passenger (without extras), even if they travel on budget airlines.

Well that's debatable. I personally wouldn't say (Ryanair at least - don't know how Jet2 work) you get charged for online check-in as you are never shown the price without it. The fact that it's broken down as a component inside the fare is neither here nor there. Just like BA etc. put fuel surcharges on their tickets - but as you're never shown the fare price without the fuel surcharge added, I wouldn't personally say it's charged as an extra.

    They don't
But don't let the facts get in the way of a good [Daily Wail esque] rant eh?

I agree. If a component of the fare is an itemised component at the end of the booking process, it's irrelevant. However, BA's fuel surcharge does become relevant when you pay for the flight with Avios points, as you then have to pay it on top of the Avios points, and it's a big rip-off, given that fuel is one of the costs of the flight itself and should be covered by the Avios points.

I couldn't care less what you're talking about. The person I was replying to wasn't - they were talking about charges in general.

Even using Spirit Airlines absurd pricing, for it to "easily double" the cost of the flight, the flight would have to be less than £22 - with flights at that price, I wouldn't personally be too bothered. I'm well aware you are on some kind of crusade against extra charges, but as I've made pretty clear I only care about the total cost.

Jet2 add in a surcharge for check-in when you get to the 'enter passenger details' page. It is not currently included in the advertised price.

It's interesting that you're implying the airline are right to charge for online check-in if they include it as an itemised part of the advertised price. Online check-in is basically using their online booking system, so if they are right to charge for that then are you implying they could charge anyone who looks at flight times and prices on the website and doesn't book flights with them?

    We finally agree!

I find it incredibly annoying as it makes transatlantic flights using BA Avios ridiculously poor value. I personally get around by using the Europe Reward Saver (something like £13 in taxes and charges each way) or flying on Qantas domestic though.
