  • Sky News has just reported that a home is being searched in a suburb of Boston and a person is in custody but no more than that. Also the FBI has taken over the investigation. There was a suggesting that one of the hospitals used to treat the injured had a swat team in situ but no confirmation on that from the authorities. It's an inhuman thing to do to ones fellow men and women, abhorrent and beyond wicked, I just don't understand.

This may be politically incorrect (as we are told how we must think nowadays!) but in my opinion the scum that do things like this should be shot by firing squad, not thousands spent housing them, feeding them and keeping them alive. They kill, maim and destroy, they are the filth of humanity and they make me sick!

Hi all, long time lurker, never felt I had much to contribute but want to say a large thank-you to all who post, I was a low level prepper by nature but have learned so much interesting and useful stuff.
Wanted to share some stuff I learned on a works training course re: defending yourself/ preventing an attack. Think it was Greyqueen who mentioned wearing quiet, sensible shoes. As well as this, consider the rest of your clothing and the way you present yourself, for example: a vest top shoulder strap (especially with a bra strap) makes a handle for a attacker to grip you. Similarly, long hair in plaits/ ponytails = handle. The advice on our course was to tie long hair up completely if you feel at risk. Coming home later than usual recently I had a hairband ready so at the end of the evening, twisted hair into a tight bun, swapped my shoes and switched on my spider sense lol.
Advice for clothing was to wear a close fitting base layer with a T-shirt style top over so if grabbed you can wriggle out of it leaving the attacker holding a cheap T-shirt whist you keep your dignity.
Another suggestion was to avoid drenching yourself with too much fragrance, great way of advertising yourself from a distance:o
Hope these help someone. Sometimes just the action of doing something to reduce the risk of being singled out increases your confidence, which as people have already mentioned makes you less likely to be targeted and sets your frame of mind into survivor not victim mode.
If I recall any other tips will try to post but currently can only achieve this with a trip to the library.

Love this thread, thanks OP and all who contribute. :)
P.S. just got a T-shirt with bats on;)

The US govt is playing this very carefully - they haven't used the terrorism word so far, though that is obviously what it is.
They are saying 'likely terrorism' now. I supposed it could be NK (by proxy even), Al Qaeda, a domestic group, a loner even. While over on the conspiracy forums, some are calling 'false flag'.
While all such actions are evil, the fact that this targetted a family day - some of whom may have been running for charity - seems even more iniquitous. It's not just about those killed, some survivors had to have limbs amputated and their lives will never be the same again.
I imagine the security for Thatcher's funeral and the London Marathon will be ramped up as a result - though big crowd events will always be sitting ducks.

    Metalswan,
Good points. It could be used against me but I could attempt to whack someone with my stick. Doubt I could fight back/run...not perhaps good for being seen when crossing the road but a lot of my outdoor clothes(coats etc...)are dark and I tend to merge into the environment especially when its night time.

I am focussed on getting home and taking the shortest route possible. My location is not a rough area so another reason why I hope to stay where I am. If I had to move I think I would stay indoors more and have to consider using a taxi which is expensive.

I always feel that using a backpack makes you an easy target as when grabbed from behind you can be pulled back and its difficult to recover and fight back. Any tips apart from don't use a backack?

  • One thing that worries me about them ramping up security for the Funeral and Marathon, both obviously in London, hows this gonna leave the rest of the country (security wise)?

It's gonna give anyone who wants to do something relatively free access to other parts of the country I would think - maybe that's being too simplistic...

What other high-profile event would be a target this week in this country?

I'm running London (and going to the Expo to pick up my race number) so I'm quite happy with lots of security.

  • Shouldn't worry too much about the rest of the country on Wednesday lots of the security in London will be armed forces, I should think the rest of the country will still have full compliment of police to look out for the rest of us.

STRAPPED good on you for still running the Marathon on Sunday, hope you have a good day and run the time you want to, Cheers Lyn.
