I guess I have two or three things against me...being short, wear glasses and have a walking stick and am usually very slow...then again as I don't look threatening perhaps that works in my favour? Who knows..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

When walking alone I always carry my keys with the heads in my palm & the jagged parts sticking out between my fingers.
Where I used to live my routes home were a choice between walking through a fairly rough estate or walking through a posh estate with all the houses a long way up long drives, I walked through the so called rough estate as there were always people around.
I firmly believe that adaptability is key, even for small SHTF events, we've had a lot of changes at work, and some staff couldn't cope & constantly bemoaned the changes, the have all been nudged out of their job, whereas those of us who knuckled down and adapted are still hanging on in there.

H7N9 cases confirmed is now 64 with 14 deaths. Interestingly a 4 year old boy has tested positive for the virus without showing any signs of symptoms and is thought to be a carrier. He was found as part of the contact check around the 7 year old girl in Beijing who is in hospital. Opinion seems to be that many people have had a much milder version of this particular virus and that it is perhaps not as virulent and deadly as first impressions suggest, watch this space I think?0

nuatha I would be the same! miss TEOTWAWKI because my nose would be in a book, probably reading about it!! I tend to keep my reference books in "hard copy" adn I will use the kindle for fiction and any freebie prepping books I find. I too keep my favourite authors to re read and tend to pass on my fiction to the CS.
As for being attacked/being vunerable I used to work in a nightclub in Brighton and walk home about 3am rather than spend a lump of my wages on a taxi. I used to take my shoes off,or change into trainers, walk down the centre of the street so that I could see anyone aproaching me, have my keys ready but also through my fingers ready to punch and to top it all a spray of "Impulse" in my other hand to use to spray in the face, stings like b*ggery! I lived near the Seven Dials an area of regular crime, prostitution and general scumbags! I never had a problem as I often planned my route home varying it regularly, accosted anybody walking my way that I hardly remotely knew as there was always safety in numbers, phoned my flatmate to tell her I was on my way and carried extra large dressmaking scissors in my bag, only had to threaten to use them once! He ran away!!!
Makes me glad I live in Wales now!

Bedsit Bob can you put an idiot proof guide to making the meths stoves on the forum? I would like to have a go but would probably make a mess or loose my eyebrows! LOL

It is the true story of an aeroplane, which suffered a propeller failure, wrecking an engine, causing the aeroplane to lose altitude and crash.
One of the most interesting parts was an explanation, by a psychologist, about how some people are born to be survivors, and others are born not to be.
I forget the exact proportions, but if memory serves, they are as follows.
In a life threatening situation, approximately 20% will, given the tiniest opportunity, escape.
Approximately 80% will, given a reasonable opportunity, escape.
Approximately 20% will, no matter what opportunities present themselves, not escape.
The first 20% are nature's survivors, possessed of a quick working, logical, thought process.
The middle 80% have the average thought process, which will reason things out given time.
The final 20% have a thought process that ceases to work under pressure.
It is for this reason, that some people remain rooted to their seats, when they could escape, by merely standing up and walking 20 feet.
Hello BB (Waves to preppers, and preppers to be)
That's an excellent point.
Doesn't matter if you have a mountain of preps, you need the skills to use the tools, and the mind-set to survive, no matter what.
Facing a difficult situation, if you've done some forward planning or thinking (like where are the exits), you've already got into survival mode.
May I coin another phrase? MIND PREP.
M - monitor everything around you (observe where you are, etc).
I - information (absorb everything you can from instructions, particular features, signs, body language of others, anything, & spread that info).
N - note it in your memory/notepad if need be.
D - deploy yourself into the 'best/safest area' e.g. near exit.
P - prepare in your thoughts any scenario that occurs to you.
R - rehearse what you would do in each case.
E- envison yourself/family escaping to safety.
P - plan, plan, and prepare again.
The brain is a curious thing; if you think negatively, don't plan, panic, your body reacts accordingly. If you think positively 'Well, I've already thought this out, I know instantly what I would do for x,y,z'; your subconcious brain is already telling your body what to do. Especially if you have repeated it.

One thing to note.
What he says about using any can, bar Coca Cola ones, doesn't apply to the UK, as other brands sold here (including 7UP) also lack the taper around the top.
The ones I use are 330ml Vimto cans.
I've also noticed that 7UP cans are a tiny bit smaller in diameter, so if you make the burner from a Vimto can, and the bottom from a 7UP can, it's easier to fit the stove together.
ETA: It qualifies for the 3 items/1 ounce challenge, as it only weighs 0.55oz.
Of course that doesn't leave much weight left for fuel.0
