I was doing a training course in Sheffield 30 years ago and walking back from a meal with a male colleague about ten at night. We heard footsteps (several) behind us and walked at a normal pace till we got round a corner when I hissed "Run like Hell"- we ran round the corner and across a main road and manage to avoid the pursuers.
I also found myself coming home from evening classes and a drunk trying to follow me up the close stairs - realised saying "please go away" in a trembling tone would do no good so grabbed my umbrella, waved it and snarled "Beat it you git" while ready to run up the stairs screaming if necessary. He mumbled something and went away!
Short answer is don't look or sound like a victim, don't freeze. and don't be too embarrassed to run or shout."This site is addictive!"

Grim, isn't it? What the hell is the matter with people that they'd do such a thing? Don't like the idea of secondary devices at all.
Brings back memories of the bad old days when bomb blasts would be set so the secondary bombs would catch people fleeing from the earlier explosion. I have never forgotten talking to a man who is from that northern irish city which has two competing versions of its name. He was matter of fact about the judgements he'd had to make as a student; if there's a bomb warning do you stay in the college building or do you run out? Depending on the proximity of the bomb, the injuries could be greater or lesser with each of those choices.:(Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

My ex OH was in town the day 2 IRA bombs went off in the town we lived in then. First blast attracted people out of the shops to see what was happening the 2nd bomb killed 2 children!
I got to know the parents of one of them later as they built a young people's centre in their memory where I later worked.
On another cheery note, there was grim news at work today. I work supporting young people and it turns out that one of 'our' young people was stabbed to death in town on Saturday. Scary times indeed!Official DFW nerd - 282 'Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts'

Reports of some losing limbs:(Boston Globe has a live blog, NBC has a live link online...
The paper is to publish a link where people can register to put up people unable to get home or their hotel rooms. That is the good side of Human nature which is most people thank heavens...

Do read this fascinating story about the Russian family who lived off the land in Siberia having fled religious persecution, not seeing anyone outside their family for 40 years:

then watch this quietly beautiful film:

about the one surviving daughter, still living alone in the Siberian wilderness, aged 70 ....
(I found it through Ferfal's blog, so thanks, GQ. I love exploring the twists and turns of serendipitous interweb wanderings!)0 -

(I found it through Ferfal's blog, so thanks, GQ. I love exploring the twists and turns of serendipitous interweb wanderings!)Glad you're enjoying FerFal; he has a YouTube channel as well. I found his blog through a tip on MSE, can't recall which of the old stylers it was, or I'd name-check them with grateful thanks, as it's one of my most regular online check-ins.
I was smiling wryly at the memory of something which happened at Shoebox Towers a few years ago. I shan't give too many details as the polis were involved and it may be a bit too much of a RL identifier. Suffice to say, I was living on my nerves and had good reason to be.;)
There was a very loud and unexpected noise right outside my bedroom window in the middle of one night. Beds are just on the inside of the windows at the Towers, the rooms are that small.
What I discovered was that I could wake from deep sleep and throw myself away from the window, off the bed and onto the floor by reflex..........:rotfl:I impressed even myself, as I lay there in a duvet-tangle, heart pounding, waiting for the other shoe to drop. And realised that my spex were on a shelf on the window-side of the bed. Doh.
Nowt more happened and when my heartbeat had returned to normal, I climbed back into bed; I learned the lesson and have my spare glasses in the BOB, in case I have to run out with no notice whatsoever.
Right, better get some more tea, check out the news and the head off to w*rk. Have a good day, everyone.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

The wicks should be 1/2", but wind the wick up and measure the width, just to be certain.
As for length, 4" is about right.
It doesn't have to be exact, provided it is long enough to comfortably touch the bottom of the fuel tank.
Wicks will last a long time, provided they aren't allowed to burn dry.0 -
The US govt is playing this very carefully - they haven't used the terrorism word so far, though that is obviously what it is.
Depends who is responsible, I suppose. When I first heard about it I thought it might be North Korea - it's Patriot Day in Massachusetts and the anniversary of Kim the first in NK. Also they had their own marathon yesterday. It would enable them to boast they can strike deep into the US heartland and at the same time it wouldn't provoke an annihilating military response. But it doesn't make sense if what they are trying to do is sell the same horse twice ie they reopen the nuclear reactor they received a 'humanitarian aid' package for closing which they have now spent so they get a new humanitarian aid package in due course in return for not reopening it. Because there is no way the US would part with money after this, if it did turn out to be them.
So chances are it's Al Qaeda - and there were reports last night on Zerohedge that the police had arrested a Saudi national, don't know if there is anything more than rumour to that. Even so it's interesting (as in, living in interesting times) to speculate on how it might affect the US stance towards NK. It could be much more difficult politically to be seen to be appeasing them.
Cash and keep the car filled. Not much more I can do, prep wiseIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
