I always feel that using a backpack makes you an easy target as when grabbed from behind you can be pulled back and its difficult to recover and fight back. Any tips apart from don't use a backack?

Don't use, or release as soon as you feel wary. chest harnesses and waist/hip belts. Make sure your back pack has freely adjustable catches on the shoulder straps (most rucksacks have ladderloc type catches on these straps). Generally wear it snug to your body, its better balanced that way (and usually far more comfortable) and will impede sudden movement far less. If some one grabs your rucksak and tries to use it against you just loosen the ladderlocs and they are left holding your rucksack rather than you. (As well as dropping the waistbelt, I will ease one side shoulder strap an inch or so, but this does throw the rucksack off balance if you have to run)

I've found a local-ish hardware store, that stocks pretty much everything I'll ever need, heating and lighting wise.

    Paraffin @ £6 for 4 Litres.

Lamp wick @ £2 per metre.

    Methylated Spirits @ £3-20 per 500ml.

OK, the last one isn't exactly cheap, but it's the cheapest I've found it locally.

ETA: Don't think I'll ever need to replace them, but if I need new Hurricane Lamps, they have the 12" ones, for £5-99 each.

They are saying 'likely terrorism' now. I supposed it could be NK (by proxy even), Al Qaeda, a domestic group, a loner even. While over on the conspiracy forums, some are calling 'false flag'.
While all such actions are evil, the fact that this targetted a family day - some of whom may have been running for charity - seems even more iniquitous. It's not just about those killed, some survivors had to have limbs amputated and their lives will never be the same again.
I imagine the security for Thatcher's funeral and the London Marathon will be ramped up as a result - though big crowd events will always be sitting ducks.

    Saw this in the Telegraph

The nuttier conspiracy forums will definitely be calling 'false flag' if that is the theory they are pursuing especially if it is followed by crackdowns. Wonder if they'll be looking closely at preppers - some of the US preppers are very into beans and bullets/guns 'n gold

The only time someone tryed that with me, they got a shock, like nuatha said I don't use the waist/chest strap's, the rucksac was shrugged off for 'em, which is when they found out how heavy the thigh was[food shopping, mainly tin's], it landed on their toe, by which time I'd turned round and was coming at them in a rugby tackle:o, turned out to be my cousin trying to suprise me:eek:, needless to say he's not tryed it since, but I did get a lecture off him for turning round to tackle him, all he got was the best form of defence is attack, Oh dear, Dad has a lot to answer for:D

  • They are saying that the devices were filled with ball bearings and as such were intended to create the optimum injuries. It is just awful to think that someone is capable of such evil.

  • Both DH and I did Judo (I also did Kendo and DH did a Krav Maga course) We have taught DD and DS how to defend themselves since they were little. But the best training before the throws etc is to learn that you keep a cool head first and foremost, the rest will come naturally after that. Even though my health is not good, I can still use a stick as if it was a Shinai if I needed to.

Yes but did you see that the Minister involved was advocating the use of GM crops? Is he another in Monsanto's pockets then?

Haven't had time to catch up but did have another realisation regarding media and Boston.
The news outlets were repeating tiny snippets of info and running with the speculation.
Social media were collecting and co-ordinating info from the ground, but more importantly working to confirm or refute speculation. There were also offers for help and advice flooding in. I learned more, faster, by keeping an eye on one newsfeed than I did by watching the BBC or the White House speech etc.
This web of contacts could turn out to be very useful - speed and different witnesses could be critical if SHTF.
BUT I would recommend lurking first, you have to know how to tune out the idiots and the lunatics, and you have to be aware that there are no filters (e.g. for images/video).

Oh, and in terms of SHTF I lose my job in a few weeks, so bye-bye house/garden/preps and possibly animals :(

Sainsbury's and M&S have withdrawn from their policy not to stock GM produce. Just leaves Waitrose now AFAIK of all the supermarkets
