Cabin fever is no more. We have ventured out. No more snow has fallen, and we needed a prescription and some plasters, so decided it made for a necessary journey. Our own side road was the worst of all, but fine if taken gently and smoothly. Everywhere else was well gritted and mainly clear.

And it prompted me to get out my snow boots which haven't been worn for many a year. They were bought in Denver one year, when we were advised that our flight had been delayed by a *storm*. Foolishly I thought this meant a lot of thunder and lightening rather than nearly 12 inches of snow, but there you go! With windchill of minus 40, it was a good excuse to buy some extra layers and the snow boots, which were good and grippy today.

I'm a little bit worried not to have seen our regular squirrel, Mrs Persil, so named for the stark whiteness of her legs and paws. I put out her favourite fat balls, and she hasn't come to my call, so I hope all's well. Daft, I know, but she is a lovely beast, and occasionally willing to break away from her normal middle aged decorum and swing from the bird table hanger like a little kid. ;) Here's hoping she's just snug in her drey.

*Ginny* Hope you are healing up okay. It sounded very ouch!

    Stay safe & warm.

    Pineapple,
Isn't it great that we are still adventurous to try something new. Often more difficult to do when alone...then again we only have ourselves to please.
Though of retirement age, it was only health issues that made me pack in work. Anyhow I made a promise to myself at the start, that each week or so I would try to do something new. In practice it's been every few weeks and at the mo it's mainly food . But still - it helps keep me from fossilizing. More or less anyway :rotfl:
  • I think I've been on that "Fasting" diet .. well, had to go to the orspikal for a fasting blood test, fasted from 8pm for two nights, next morning - more snow and couldn't get the car off the drive. Finally went today (as did the world and his wife)!
And my Krups hand mixer with bowl has packed up :(. I've only had it 32 years, they don't make them to last do they? Thinking of upgrading to a food processor thingie, one that will make pastry coz I have trouble standing for any length of time and that looks a useful addition. Can anyone recommend one that's not expensive? Or shall I go for the Kenwood mixer/bowl I just saw in Sainsbugs for £24.99?

    No problems Grandma :)
Hobson's choice..that sounds like a good price for a Kenwood. Why don't you check out the reviews on Amazon for the model you are thinking of getting.

I had one given some time ago and it does make mixing and beating easier. I find cakes are fluffier if I use the mixer as well. I have never used the dough hooks that came with it as I mix my gluten free bread in the bread maker now.

It's definitely turning colder here now...we are going back down to 10 degrees tomorrow..we have been at 17 for a few days now so going to feel the difference.

I appear to have hurt between my shoulders by sneezing......going to get my OH to rub it with hot ointment tonight...makes a change from me putting it on his back!

Went for a walk around the village this afternoon to get some fresh air and sunshine while it was out for half an hour. I really enjoyed the walk even though I had to turn around and head back fast when the sky turned black. Going to have a nice evening relaxing now. Have done my two hours work online for today. Have a lovely evening folks, sounds like its going to be a very cold one!

    Hello All!
Well we woke up to 4'' more snow on top of the 8+'' already here! (South east Wales) The weather forecast has just been updated to heavy snow from now, all night until 8 oclock tomorrow and then light snow all day! The kids are still off school and driving me mad! even though they have been out in the snow.
I ventured out on my trusty cob ( horse!) as he loves the snow and he is so much more fun than a 4x4. Got some strange looks as I was all dressed up in a ski suit with a balaclava under my riding hat, not sure if I looked like a highway man or a terrorist! As I already have enough supplies to last me ages I decided to go to the local shop to buy essentials, more wine and chocolate!! Got even more funny looks as I tied Alf (horse) outside the shop! Had a great ride home cantering up the footpaths because I could!! and no one else was about. Hope you all stay safe, warm and enjoy the essentials like I will be.

  • The Kenwood was "exclusive to Sainsbury" they say. It IS a good price though, so maybe I'll go for that. It's just the same type as the failed one but I doubt it'll last as long!
They had a small food processor for £45 though, thought that might be more useful?
Will check Amazon though, thanks for that.

I have just seen this, I was thinking of the melting snow bringing floods but it sounds like torrential rain might be the cause of them...

    UK Storm Chasers
The breakdown of the colder weather is expected to be this Friday, there is a risk of some further heavy snowfall as a weather front associated with a low pressure systems moves in from the West.

As this bumps against the colder air snowfall is likely for a time across some areas.

There is a lot of uncertainty from this range out, there is a chance the warmer air will just rip right through the colder air without giving it a chance with heavy rain/localised flooding and gale force winds.

Here is a map for Friday showing where the current model output expects snow to fall initially.

It may be that all areas see some snowfall before the milder air wins.

The outlook is very unsettled with heavy rain, further flooding and gale force winds, severe at times with deepening areas of low pressure.

The Jetstream is really powering back up and it's back the Wests time to have a say in our weather.

Here we have thunderstorms forecast for tomorrow again, I am heartily sick of them and all the hassle of unplugging the electrics and wearing layers to deal with ever changing temperatures. Anyone want to swap places till the spring?

Our local forecast gives further light flurries possible Wednesday and Thursday and a 'last gasp' downfall on Friday. So I am going to try to get my car up our tricky lane today or tomorrow. The main road is clear though.
Not that I'm running out of essentials.
On second thoughts maybe chocolate and some decent whisky are essentials...;)
