    Hello 2T

Thanks, and wow, we think we have it hard here!

I notice that we are on the same latitude, yet, our warm current on the west must be helping a little to keep the worst at bay...

~For some reason, I am seeing the alcohol in the snow drift and thinking 'What a good idea!' LOL! Never mind the snow ploughs, etc...

If you're stuck in snow and want to keep the engine running to keep warm, you need to get out and clear the snow away from around the exhaust or you're liable to take a wee nap and never wake up. And as the snow keeps falling you need to keep clearing.

Let us know how it goes. I'm looking to cut down costs and the attraction of Plusnet is that it's call centres are in the UK.
That said I'm with the much maligned Orange but can't complain about their service.

I'm going to 'make' some pickled eggs later having picked up some free range relatively cheaply but more than I can eat in the next week or so. Then I might try to get my car up the lane to top up supplies - we have cleared a tyre track width all the way up!

Of course it is just my word Pineapple, But so far I cannot fault their customer service and the reliability of their product. They have rarely let me down.

When I started with them last year(forgetting about the line rental)I was offered 60GB and unlimited access Midnight to 8am for approx £6 for six months and then £11.99 for the remainder.

Or the other option was 10GB and unlimited Midnight to 8am for under £5.

Until the end of January it is now 12 months for £4.99 and unlimited 24/7 and seemingly no fair useage condition.

But I will be paying £6.66 per month for 18 months so slightly more than that but cheaper than what I pay now...and as prices will probably increase I don't think that is too bad.

To think a year ago I was paying around £15.99 for a dial up service with a limit of being online for two hours at a time. Different company...and adding in the phone line rental(and phonecalls)that was £30+ per month.

Now it is £10 less and most calls are free if you allow for paying upfront for the line and a monthly fee that gives 24/7 access to calls. So now it is £20 per month and free calls. But if you restrict when you make calls...that can come down to £16 per month approx 55p daily.

It's certainly worth looking at their site or just having a chat and saying "What can you do for me?"

I believe that you can just take the broadband if wished. I don't work for Plusnet.

Hello all :) hope you are all warm and cosy with endless bars of good chocolate and a wee drop of the hard stuff at hand....

Dare I say this but we have the storms and bursts of torrential rain...I think I have rust setting in rather than a tan at the moment. You wouldn't believe how many messages I got on facebook saying they thought it was always hot and sunny in Greece.....oh how I wish that true!!!! They forecast 17 degrees but I can safely say it is nowhere near that. Unless we get a sudden burst of the suns rays hitting our village it ain't going to happen today....

Glad you liked the link to the photos of Russia, I love to see them and hear the weather reports but I hate snow and ice. I can't seem to walk properly at all in it, maybe because I am scared of falling. When you buy new shoes here they will replace the soles and heels with non slip material at a very cheap price and sometimes free, if the shoes don't already have them. It's because so many people slip and hurt themselves on the wet marble pavements in the town. Who needs snow and ice when a bit of rain has the same effect.

The worst experience we had of the snow in Europe was last time we drove back from the UK to Greece. We had booked the Venice ferry to go on the Monday and drove fine through Europe till we got to near Germany...we saw cloud building up behind us and then a snow storm that continued to follow us. We managed to outrun it till we got to Innsbruck, when it was all around us and minus 13 degrees. The snow chains were useless against the ice on the road so we pulled into the first hotel we came to. They turned up the heating as I was frozen, made us an out of hours dinner then charged us just 24 euros for both of us for the night and the meal.

We set off next day and got to Venice safely. Unfortunately they had cancelled all ferries due to a Holy day...even though we had a ticket for that sailing. Not a cafe or anything in sight to get a cup of tea and a bite to eat and it was starting to freeze again. We spent the whole night sitting in the car running the engine for a few mins to warm us up. We piled all our sleeping bags, towels and clothes out of the suitcase on top of us. A kind Greek lorry driver kept checking on us all night to make sure we were still alive lol. It was minus 15 at its worst!

Having no cafe available or shops, we opened the mince pies, chocolates and bottle of Navy rum my mum had given us as a present. For a non drinker I made short work of a couple of swigs.... (no cup lol) and slept for most of the night. The ferry next day came in 16 hours late because of freezing fog and we had storms all the way back to Greece on the 24 hour journey. I have sworn that I will never, ever go back to Venice as long as I live.

Please don't drink alcohol if you are stuck outside in snow or in your car.
Alcohol drives the heat from the inner core of your body to the outside so you cool quicker and people have died of the cold.

Just thought I would post this for those interested in drop spindles.

BBB - I wouldn't risk petrol in a car. I might consider a can of diesel, preferably in a van (separate compartment to the driver) - it's hard to set diesel on fire!

I had the couple of swigs of rum as nothing else was available and I wasn't driving :)

    Hello TM

Like it! I was beginning to wonder if I was filling up the spaces in the car too much, with less room for shopping/people!

    Thank you!

You could consider a couple of those handwarmer packs that outdoors shops sell? Compact and light weight but very useful for keeping the extremities warm; stuff one down the side of your boots for a little while and alternate with the mitts. If you put it between your thighs it will boost your whole body temperature IME.

  • Nasty wet cold rain here, washing most of the remains of the snow away. Last night DD1 & I went out for a New Year celebration meal with our local knitting group; when we left to walk up to town, there was meltwater standing in the road & dripping gently everywhere. By the time we came back a couple of hours later, the sky had cleared & it was all frozen solid again; the ice crystals on the puddles were quite spectacular so I think it all froze very quickly. I see we have snow forecast again for tonight down here but can't see it lying unless we have some clear frosty bits first!
Supplies are holding out well but it's not a problem to trot up to the supermarket anyway. I'm running another spinning tutorial at the farm shop later so will grab the chance to buy in some extra pet/livestock supplies whilst there - she pays me in cash & I promptly spend it in the shop - it's the closest to a barter arrangement I'm likely to get on the edge of suburbia!
