A car will provide good protection from a lightening strike (assuming its not a convertible or has a fibre glass body, but it won't necessarily act as a faraday cage.
Assuming you're looking for protection against EMP type emmisions a useful rule of thumb is that if you can receive a mobile phone signal then there is no protection against EMP.
A metal box with a snug fitting lid (which overlaps metal to metal) will provide good EMP protection (the addition of an earthed strap with provide some additional protection). In my case I have an old Smith's Crisps tin, which is lined with insulation and contains a netbook, charger and optical drive. I was involved in some EMP testing and a old tobacco tin provided protection to a pair of USB drives. A metal biscuit or sweet tin would offer similar protection, if it doesn't have a close fitting lid then seal all round with aluminium tape.

Stay safe and warm everyone....we have bad weather now as well..I can't believe we were sitting on the jetty fishing yesterday in glorious sunshine all afternoon. It has been pouring with rain since early this morning and the sky is black. It is also getting very windy.
The weather station here has just issued a 'dangerous weather' warning for the whole of Greece. That usually means horrendous storms and us losing our electricity for long periods of time. At the moment we have the log fire glowing and several candles burning, as well as some nice spiced orange aromatherapy oil simmering away...its very Christmassy really.
I really need to go and make dinner but its tempting to stay where I am to be honest. Our bad weather is forecast to last the next three or four days, it sounds like yours will be the same.
Not sure what is going on but I could hear the Hercules carrier plane flying in and out of the airport all night. Have also seen that the British forces have been in Albania practising evacuating British people from emergency situations.....hmmmm......do they know something I don't?“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
Oooh very inteesting Tonsils, wonder what that's about... I see there's a westher warning out for gales again tomorrow, so my elect will go off sooner or later.
Could you tell me more about orange oil simmering - how does that work? Is that these oil burner thingies? I'd like one of them but dono where to find.0 -

HTHThe only place I know which meets this criteria is the basement of my neighbourhood hardware store. I once tried calling Mum with a query on something she'd asked me to get for her (my life as a shopbot for small town parents and country cousins) and I was baffled as my mobile (ADSA parasiting off the Vodafone network) has never failed to find a signal.
The assistant told me that no one can get a signal down there.
There is also a huge steel vault in the basement of the municipal buildings which would probably meet the criteria. Depressingly, it is full of old files not piles of banknotes. Real life can be awfully dull at times.
I've read in many places that cars, provided the windows are up and I assuming excluding soft-tops, are safe in a lightning storm because even if they do get struck, the bolt will earth. But surely an EMP would totally fry the electronics in a modern car? I've thought you'd need to go back to early seventies auto tech to avoid these fragile components.
They always say that rats and cockroaches would survive TEOTWAWKI but I think ole Morris Minors would probably make it through..............:rotfl:
Been dry and sunny here today but the temps started dropping like a stone at dusk and I think it'll be a frosty night. Have just put the heating on. Heaven knows what tomorrow will bring. just hope everyone stays dry and warm.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Well I have continued to sneakily prep! I now have all my EDC (every day carry) sorted plus a rucksack in the boot of the car as my Get Home Bag. Extras in my GHB include extra energy bars, a pack of salted cashew nuts ( I love em!), a small carton of UHT milk and of course chocolate! I included UHT milk as I read somewhere milk has better rehydration than water. I will be buying some space blankets to pop in the car along with my foil lined picnic blanket and a couple of extra wool blankets. All I need now is a good book, a hip flask with emergency homemade blackcurrant brandy and extra chocolate and I can decide to wait it out til rescue or head for home! I have continued to build up food, water (despite my own spring) candles etc so I estimate with the freezer contents (got a generator) we can bug in for as long as neccesary at least a month or more.
My next project will be to pack an evac bag although given that we are on a farm this would have to be a last resort as all of our resources are here and we can protect ourselves.
Look forward to hearing all your preps as I am still learning!

This set of oils and burner came from Lidl's offers today...a set of five oils and a burner for six euros (plus two wooden blocks to put in the wardrobe with the oil on them). The burners can be found in pound shops and the oils too at times. Fill the top with water then add a few drops of the oil to it. Light the candle underneath and it will fill the house with the aroma for hours. Lovely.
I will ask my sister where she buys hers from in Scotland.
Meanwhile you can put a pan of hot water on the stove, add orange/lemon peel and simmer with a spoonful of cinnamon or spice added....it scents the house lovely. It could be done on top of a wood burner as well I suppose....“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. Can I vent about my stupid hubby.
Went to do the Tesco petrol voucher offer today. He helped me and watched whilst I explained about doing 2 separate shops to max the vouchers and price promise. Then got the money off the full tank of petrol and thought it was great. so we decided to do the other car as well to fill it up.
I wanted to go tomorrow, but no he had to go tonight. I was doing tea and sorting the kids etc, but he insisted he knew what he was doing. In the end I did him a list and confirmed he understood it needed to be in the 2 separate shops I listed. I told him to do one shop pay and load up the car then go around again, but no he says that's stupid I will have 2 separate piles in the trolly.
He comes back and says he loaded up the till with the 2 shops and the women behind the till told me you are wrong you don't need the shops separate to get all the petrol vouchers.
OMG I explained it was for the price promise, I told him over and over about needing 8 items for EACH SHOP for the PP argggggg!!!!
So now £10 down on the PP and about £3-£5 of filler "bits" we didn't need stupid man .
I suppose at least we got the petrol discount, but it wound me right up. He wouldn't wait, and even with a list still cocked it up. It might not sound a lot but £15 is a lot to waste. So then he got the hump and stormed out and is off somewhere driving around wasting petrol grrrrrrrrr.........
Sorry I know its not prepping, but I needed to vent lol. At least the offer means we are seriously stocked up on squash, milk and butter.
