Ali your day's response resonates with me but in reverse, when DH tries to tell me how to do something around the house I tell him that while I do not tell him how to design train stations (that's been his job for nearly 40 years) he should not tell me how to do my job! I have come to love gender role divisions in my later years! LOL

  • Thanks GQ I will definately give the seed saving a go this coming year. I can see that it makes a lot of sense to save them. If they survive to seed I'll have a much better idea of what works in our damp cold part of the world:rotfl:. Iv'e been reading a book on scottish gardening which has reminded me we really are a diverse country weather wise, so i need to be a bit more savvy when planting veg and choose seeds a bit better than i have before. I have a tendency to get over excited and buy lots of pretty packets and hope for the best:o.
I bought OH a gillie kettle a couple of years ago for crimbo and we love it, much fun has been had never mind the joy of a cuppa when we fancy. I found an old style toastie maker (in a fat face sale of all places) that worked really well held over the kettle, so a double whammy of fun that picnic.

We had a lovely sunny day today and 24 degrees in the shade. We went fishing and I happened to have my camera with me when a sun halo appeared in the sky around the sun. I managed to get a great photo..they are caused by ice crystals reflecting the sunlight. It is supposed to be a sign of a bad storm nearby.

Well that pic just shows England but we're to gt it tonight - weather warnings out all over the place and snow expected first. So we did the shops yesterday and don't need to go out for a week now. Gales of 65mph, snow then rain. Wonderful.

Can you ever have enough sweeties and chocolate for emergency supplies?

Hope all is well with everyone when the weather breaks loose....stay warm and cosy and snuggle up.

Things are very quiet here in Greece at the moment just hope its not the calm before a storm....haven't checked yet when the strikes are this week so will have to go and have a look. We were warned of a 6 hour electric cut the other day but it never happened...so much to getting up early so we could have breakfast and a cuppa!

Saw this and thought of you - seems like a lot of work for something you will hopefully never use but if the S does HTF I'd be grateful for something more gourmet than my current pasta and tomatoes.

Very glad the predicted storm didn't hit this weekend as was running a 10k this morning which would have been horrific in rain and wind. Luckily conditions were prefect - still and bright. Glad is over if there is heavy weather coming.

    Flash warning of severe weather

Warning type: Heavy rain, strong winds, and flooding.

Heavy rainfall, in association with a complex frontal system, will move into western areas of the UK overnight tonight and into Monday. As much as 50mm of rainfall is possible, particularly across the higher ground of Western Scotland, though even to lower levels as much as 40mm is possible.

Given the already high groundwater levels across the UK, these rainfall totals lead to the risk of localised flooding.

The rain will be accompanied by strong to gale force winds, with winds once again strongest across Northern and Western Scotland.

The public should be advised that disruption to transport is a possibility in the affected areas

  • Hi all,
Been away visiting fil this past week and have finally caught up on the thread. As I packed I realised what a dilema I 'd have packing a bob. Once I had everything together I'd never be able to fit it all in let alone move it. This stark realisation was a worrying one. Firstly I need a backpack that is strong, light and not too expensive. Any suggestions please.
Have also been looking at water needs and decided that katadyn although not cheap look to be the best and can be found on amazon cheaper than else where.
The pocket filter is light, durable. £209
There are a couple of others like the vario and the combi which are cheaper. The combi and pocket will filter 50,000 ltrs/13,000 gals per ceramic filter. Worth looking at for those after a filter. The bottles do not have such good filters and the filter cartridge capacity is up to 100 ltrs. The Katadyn website is brilliant but I can't post links yet.
We also have a solar powered radio that we got on amazon for about £15 a year ago (oh often has it on all night and we buy less batteries now).
Have been thinking more and more about the need for a faraday cage. Has anyone else thoughts on this and if its possible to buy them or would we need to make our own. Would like to get a couple of walkie talkies and a solar charger and protect them with some torches and a spare radio etc.
And finally, has anyone bought and used a portable solar charger suitable for more than phones and radios etc. There are so many mixed and negative reviews I'm confused.

Thanks 2ts for keeping us updated on Greece and the weather. So little is shown on the news.
