  • one of my colleagues assures me that you can make superb outdoor cookers from re-purposed stainless steel washing machine drums.

My brother's done one of those! Quick & simple to make, and has since been copied by just about all his DT teacher mate's pupils for their GCSE coursework. But it took him about 2 hours to convince the guys at the tip that he could dismantle the washing machine for the drum; it was electrical & he's not electrically-qualified. The fact that he wasn't taking any of the electrical bits was irrelevant; it's still electrical & it's more than our jobs are worth, mate... anyway, he got one in the end! And although I dearly love our succession of rescued potbelly BBQ stoves (which are brilliant for all kinds of outdoor cooking, not jut BBQs) I'm a wee bit jealous of the way the embers twinkle through his drum... :D

  • Grey queen, the spring never runs dry even in summer although it does trickle instead of flow! It comes directly out of the mountain so no real problems of contaminants dead sheep etc!! I have used it before when doing building work, you sould see the plumbers faces when I filled up the kettle for their tea!
Butterfly brain please no kibbutz! I like my home made wine , blackcurrant brandy and sloe vodka too much!!
I will continue with the stealth prepping and keep getting support and ideas from this thread.

Carrying on from the musical theme. I was fortunate enough to sing at the Bridgewater Hall on Sunday accompanied by none other than The Black Dyke Brass Band. They were suberb and were wern't half bad!!
P.S. We sang The Armed Man by Carl Jenkins. Very appropriate for Rememberence Sunday.

Hi all! I didn't think I would find people on here like me, but with all the recent natural disasters, and countries bombing each other its really got me thinking...

Is there anywhere that has an ultimate list of everything to have for a years supply so that you don't die/become ill/can survive?

I've just bought a solar charger case that can charge every single type of phone/GPS etc. Thinking of getting a wind up/solar power torch, and sneakily start getting more supplies in without my mum noticing, because she thinks I'm mad enough as it is without doing all this!

Megan:-Funnily enough a lot of us have stealthily built up stocks for the very same reason :rotfl:
I think most of us separate it into groups. I would say look at, (in no particular order) Light, Heat/Cooking, Water, Food and Information (BOB bag)
Survival skills are helpful but subjective to each person and their own situation.
Someone will have a link to a list I'm sure, just don't feel you have to organise it in one mad rush. Bit by bit is better.

GQ:- MacD*nalds!! Oh that has put me off my breakfast! On a lighter note, I have been known to 'scrat' around both scrap yards and tips and can confirm there are 'goodies' to be had. As children my brothers and I furnished our den in the woods with stuff from a local tip. My Mam would have been horrified!

hi megan01 and welcome - there is a calculator which gives a guide to quantities for 3 months (I havent checked it to see if it's accurate) for stores http://www.p2snetwork.co.uk/psclite.html

but really you will know your own needs better than any of us - do you take regular medication, do you have any dietary requirements, are you allergic or intolerant to anything, do you wear glasses or contact lenses, do you have a skin condition etc

this link to a reference for daily intake might help in terms of food balance - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reference_Daily_Intake

but as a astarting point allow approx 2000 calories per person per day and 2-3 litres of water for drinking per person per day too and slowly start building up - dont spend lots of money all at once, spend wisely and buy things you know you will use ANYWAY and then rotate your goods using the ones that have the shortest shelf life first! I hope that helps a little bit to get you started.

I have just had this update on the UK weather for the weekend

    UK Storm Chasers
The nasty low pressure that was showing on the models has lost it's intensity and changed it's track, with it now expected to bring a batch of wet and windy weather to much of the UK this weekend, gales, possibly severe gales for some areas, so no longer exclusive to Scotland.

Northern England is the higher risk zone for strong winds this weekend.

Sunday in particular will be bad. Gusts of up to 50-60mph possibly higher for exposed locations, based on the latest model output.

:) Morning all and hello and welcome to megan01.

Some folks like to prep and some folks look at preppers and think mad as a box of frogs. It's an individual choice, and there's no law against it.

One little trick which has made my life a wee bit easier is to buy a felt pen which can write on metal and plastic. I just went to the stationery dept of a big store and asked.

I use this to write the BB date on the top of tins, which saves squinting at the small print, and also to write on plastic surfaces. Cost £2 and very useful.

I find buying with a storecupboard in mind has made me much more aware of BBs and similar. If I'm buying tinned or packaged stuff, I always check the BBs before purchasing. One thing you will notice is that sometimes there will be several cartons/ tins/ packets of the same product on the shelf at the same time and that they will have dramatically-different BB dates.

F'instance, I was buying UHT milk at Mr T the other month and one carton was out of date (I told a shelf-filler and he took it away) some were dated March 2013 and some in Dec 2012. I guess it's caused by different cases being opened and put out on the shelves.

Purely for personal interest, I also put the purchase date, price and store (unless it's own-branded) on the top. Because I want to see what inflation will do. But I'm a bit of a nerd about some things............:rotfl:

I agree that watching what has befallen those poor people in the NY area has proved a salutory experience and I'm hearing RL rumblings from surprising quarters about prepperish issues. It may be the fad of the moment but you can bet your last pack of AA batteries that the lives of those who have endured Superstorm Sandy will be forever changed.

I keep my stores in various places (famously, the tinned foods are on rolling trollies under the bed) and restock the kitchen cupboards from there. Stocks are restocked when they get low and there's a sweet deal on. Not going hungry is high on my list of lifetime ambitions.

Quick Q, I'm in the market for a very small radio for my BOB. I'm thinking prolly have to be battery powered, but battery/ solar would be ideal. Have been scouring mainstream chainstores (my city has all the usual suspects) but with no success. Has anyone bought something similar recently, and if so what/ where/ how do you rate it?

Nuatha, glad to hear that Herself has got her appt. Best wishes for a speedy resolution and return to health.

Right, tea needs drinking. Laters, my lovelies.

PS has anyone got a link to a visual for a washing machine drum stove? I just got it as a throwaway comment from a colleague. I guess the principle is just the IKEA cutlery drainer writ large?
