I was thinking at least they have something, unlike Haiti for example, who's many residents are still sleeping rough years later and have had to endure more hurricanes.
100 years ago which ever country you were in you'd have had to taken care of yourself in such circumstance.
I'm pleased most of the world has moved on from this but I wouldn't want to rely on the government here to look after us, all the more reason to prep harder.0 -
Yes I am glad that they have something but you would think a supposedly advanced nation could do better than that, they are not in the mountains of India. It would not surprise me if those people are still in tents all these years later.
Haiti really breaks my heart. They have no money and no resources to speak of.0 -
Thank you for that link, so sad . I was watching some interviews with the people last night and it was heartbreaking to hear some of their stories. It seems that FEMA can pay some compensation up to a limit of 30,000 dollars, but it is only paid to people who lost their main home. It does not apply if you rent or it's your second or holiday home. I also read that many did not have insurance to cover the building even though they were only yards away from the sea front . So some have literally lost everything and will get no money to help them start again.
There was also talk of some insurances not paying up at all on the claims. It was something to do with the way the storm was classified I think. I know some insurances used to refuse to pay some claims when they classed it as ''an act of God''. Interestingly it can't be classed as that in Greece. Our buildings cover is for ''all eventualities' with such strange things as an aeroplane falling on it or diesel oil, named in the policy. It has to cover us for earthquake as well, which is why its so expensive.
Watching the developments with Gaza etc closely to see what is going on...meanwhile many seem to be ignoring Syria which might give them chance to go into action....it's scary stuff one way or another and all a bit too close to Greece for my liking.
Someone mentioned the higher likelihood of SHTF events on a Friday...I seem to recall that was one of Nostradamus predictions about the third world war....something about an attack during Friday prayers. I haven't been able to find the translation of the verse I am thinking of yet.
They have just started drilling for oil and gas in the Ionian sea, with both Turkey and Albania now making threatening noises over wanting a share of them. Personally I just hope they don't allow them to do massive environmental damage in their greed.
I went out and paid my bills and got more supplies in today. Best be on the safe side and stay stocked up with all the essentials. You never know what is just around the corner for you do you?“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
flapjacks all round - I made them using golden syrup flavoured oats and 'pure' spread and white sugar so I hope you all like them
I am really grumpy at work today - cant shake it - anyone know any good jokes?
I am trying to devise a "how many preppers does it take to change a light bulb" type joke but cant get the punch line punchy enough - something along the lines of either
none cos the powers out
or
one to find the grab bag, one to get the water, one to put the kettle on, one to go to the shed, one to wind the dynamo, one to find the matches, one to light the candle .... etcBlah0 -

Eleven to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum
Thirty-six to debate which method of changing light bulbs is best, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty

Three to post about links they found from the URLs that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group
Thirteen to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "me too"
Two to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy
Five to say, "Didn't we go through this already a few months ago?"

One forum lurker / newbie to respond to the original post eight months from now and start it all over againBlah0 -
And maybe one extra to say 'Thank you, I have learned some relevant information of how to change light bulbs, so that is a very useful thing!!!'.
Afternoon preppers, I wonder if anyone knows the answer to a pertinent question that I am going to ask because it is something I don't know and not to cause friction within any faction regular posters, lurkers or dissenters.
Is there an MSE policy on online bullying? If so, what are the determining factors as to what constitutes bullying and not just robust differences of opinion? Also, what action should be taken to notify of the occurence? and what action will be taken to rectify the situation?
We are all adults and we all join in on these threads of our own volition and there are some instances of at the very least unkindness that pop up fairly regularly and distress many of the posters. I ask from interest and not because of any particular incident.
If anyone does have answers I would be extremely interested to hear them. Lyn.0 -

If anyone wants clarification of any MSE policy then the best way is to send an email to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com
Alternatively you can post on the Site Feedback board or the Forum Policy & Rules Discussion where the team are likely to see it.
