I believed that most people had agreed we could do with setting up a new thread. When I suggested it back in mid June, you yourself appeared to agree with me at that point Mrs L.

As I explained, it was a comment by someone yesterday that jogged my memory.

It is a continuation of this thread pure and simple. As there seems to be a feeling that the name is inappropriate I can ask Zippychick to change it to Preparation - the Continuation Thread if that would address the concerns that people have raised. Although I started the thread I don't seem to be able to edit the title.

Anyone who reads the thread will see that it is almost indistinguishable in terms of what is discussed. The only difference seems to be that at least three new posters have said they would like to take the opportunity to join.

That was me. As you say maryb, there had been previous discussion about setting up a new thread, so I suppose I was trying to pour oil on troubled waters :o:(

There is a thread on the "Debate house prices and the economy" board, called "The Nice People Thread" - it was originally set up because some posters on that board were so aggressive to anyone who disagreed with them. It's a chat thread. Every time it reaches 10,000 posts we start a new thread, with a different name + "Nice People Thread number xxx" and a link to the previous ones. It works fine. It's in its 15th incarnation atm.

I don't mind there being two threads, and I have time to read both, but not everyone does.

Pineapple, I'm sorry, I didn't make myself at all clear. As you say we never snubbed anyone. But as we have to go over the same issues afresh, then this thread's back story is a secondary resource, not one we can point people to in the first instance or they would feel snubbed. And it will still be there.
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

OK paidinchickens you are another one I am going to be jealous of. Sorry if we just stray into DIY for a mo but mine is freestanding too. Have you used any special heat proof plaster behind?

They took out a square of plasterboard then filled it with fire proof cement (? does normal cement catch fire) then a thin skim of plaster over the top.

We originally wanted one in the conservatory but when the fella came round he said it could go straight through the house so it goes straight through the kids bedroom, through the loft and out the roof.........fabulous!!

The only problem was waiting 10 days for the cement to dry before we could light a fire then on the tenth day it was so hot (do you remember that day?) we had to sit outside while the fire was lit :rotfl:

Ah yes.... that was the day we had Summer....(though actually today's not bad.) It's a beauty PIC!
  • Perhaps it would be a sensible idea to actually ask all the posters who use this thread if they want it shut? The new one is already in existence and if the majority of people who have posted on this one feel it's no longer necessary we'll know.
  • I would vote for one thread on Preparedness. I honestly don't mind which one is active :)
