I agree with the above. I think the timing of the new thread was rather 'unfortunate' in that it coincided with a minor referendum related squabble and suddenly there is a new thread with what could be viewed as a 'new political reality' heading. So it is not surprising that the perception might be that it is all related even if it isn't. And suddenly we have someone saying they have asked the old thread to be locked
.
If there was a feeling that a new thread would help draw a line over any disagreements and smooth the way for a new era of peace and love between forumnites, sorry but it won't work. It's the nature of forums that people disagree or that they sometimes need a break. I myself have been known to throw a hissy fit and do exactly that.:rotfl:
That said this thread has been fairly peacable compared to most and the recent rumblings were mainly due to one poster taking issue with someone's mindset post Referendum and there was even a comment about the thread obviously not being the place for 'serious discussion'. The phrase 'spoiling for a fight' comes to mind and this is the point at which I had to sit on my hands. I do hope the new thread gets its 'serious discussion'.
Threads do get stale however and need reinventing and I am sure the new one will do well. It's good to see that it already has new blood.
But.....
We had a couple of people getting a bit huffy and talking about not posting.
Then the comment
This thread is now extremely long anyway. Perhaps it's time to start a fresh one that concentrates on prepping issues?
Next we have the announcement that a new thread has been started followed by the announcement that a request had been put in to lock the old thread. Unfortunately, the timing, the suddenness and the way it happened still leave an unpleasant taste.
I know I said I wasn't going to post for a while, and I've thought about this for some time before posting - but if I'm being quoted and implicated in a situation, then I feel the need to respond.
It was me that commented that I felt this place wasn't the place for 'serious discussion'
I had introduced into the debate certain media reports, and was wondering that, in some cases, the Leave vote may have be a protest against the establishment.
But people immediately jumped on me, as they apparently assumed these were my personal views, even though I was at pains to state they were not - I was merely introducing a topic for discussion
I was told by one person to stop saying things like this (even though I wasn't personally saying them, just reporting something I'd read) and another person said I'd made a disgraceful statement and hoped it wasn't a true picture of my state of mind.
That's why I felt it this thread wasn't a place for real discussion, as I felt people were not able to distinguish the difference between what is personal opinion, and what is raising a subject for debate.
People got too emotional, and quickly jumped to a wrong conclusion, rather than reading that I was actually trying to say.
I'm sorry if I angered you- it wasn't my intention. I most certainly wasn't spoiling for a fight - if I wanted that, I wouldn't have withdrawn from the thread (on several occasions now)
I hope I have clarified the situationEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Thanks Goldie
Sometimes words on a forum come across differently to what was intended. It's been an 'emotional' time for many.
Maybe we all need to draw a line now.
Re whether to keep this thread I think it might be confusing to have two very similar threads and there are already some 'oldies' on the new one (not that I'm looking at you GQ).
That said I personally don't mind (I'm used to seeing double).
If we were to have two threads I think there would need to be something which distinguishes one from the other.0 -
Just to say that if this thread were to be locked, it could still be read as far as I'm aware; it just couldn't be posted on any more.
I don't mind there being two threads, but I know some people are against closing this one so I'm going to remain neutral on this occasion :cool:0 -
I must thank the last few days for opening my eyes to character traits in me that I wasn't aware of. If I have snubbed anyone be it old or new posters, if I have upset people so badly that they no longer feel they can post, if I have been upset myself and people feel that they can't post because I'm upset please have a huge apology, it's wonderful what you can learn on the internet isn't it?
If this thread is causing so much discord then I won't fight for its survival, it's not much fun being a one man band for a cause, last man standing is NOT a comfortable position.
I'd like to thank all those friends who have been supporting behind the scenes, bless you for your comradeship, it's not too good being at the pointy end, I'm not normally the villain of the piece, new job for me but I don't think I'll put into the CV. So RIP Prepping on this thread, don't bury it too deep, you might all need it in the years to come.0 -
Thanks Goldie

If we were to have two threads I think there would need to be something which distinguishes one from the other.Oi! You casting nasturtiums against my age? I'll have you know there may be snow on the roof but there's still fire in the heart [STRIKE]h[/STRIKE].
PiC, I am most seriously lusting after than woodburner, that is a gorgeous bit of kid, very envious.
I'm in two minds about the two threads because I find it difficult to read too many at once and keep up with everybody, but I don't want to lose ANY of you, old hands and new pals alike.
Heck, suppose BB didn't crop up with saucy comments for me from time to time? It just wouldn't feel right. And all the other running gags.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Please please opt for the continuation thread. I'm really sorry that I appeared high handed and insensitive. I have asked Zippychick to rename the thread if she sees fit so hopefully we can all agree to go along with what the Board Guide decides.
But there are several new posters on that thread already and they could do with the input of those who have been thinking about all this for sometime. It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I don't think so, I'm obviously much too divisive to be posting on the prepping thread. I'm pleased you have new people how nice for you I wish you every success.0

Anyone heard about the Chilcot report? Corbyn was very good in the commons.

Apology accepted, I have started posting again.
Maryb - i don't think you've been either high-handed or insensitive.
I think a continuation of the thread is lovely and new people are already joining.
Time to move on.Not dim.....just living in soft focus
