But I thought May and Crabb were both remain supporters. Am I wrong? Wouldn't the leave majority want leadership that reflected the leave mandate of the referendum? Someone to negotiate from that point of view. I'm confused.

Mila, I couldn't tell you anything about the questions you're asking, sorry - I can't bear thinking about individual politicians, especially at the moment, backstabbing backstabbers :(

Neighbours who saw the incident were too scared to try to help, which the young woman says she completely understands because of how frightening the men were.

Very sorry to hear this, Saipan. Somebody pointed out this article to me yesterday: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/nov/13/how-do-i-respond-racial-abuse-public-transport-onlookers-silent?CMP=share_btn_fb saying its understandable that people don't want to put themselves in danger, but taking photos of the assailants/harrassers could be helpful.
Show us your tin stove VJ'sMum? and how to make them, that would be a very useful thing to know how to do. How long did it burn for and what did you fuel it with? did it re-heat ready cooked food or have you cooked on it from scratch?
Me too, I'd love details on that.

  • Mila, I guess you feel anyone that was a "Remain" supporter would be unconvincing as Prime Minister?

I follow the logic of that - but I dont see it that way personally. Being British PM (even right now) isnt going to be just about Brexit - it will be about a lot of more "business as usual" issues too.

I think it's probably a traditional British value (I wouldnt know how that applies to other countries?.....) to "If you are the one in charge then BE in charge and do what the majority of people in the group require to be done - and not let your personal feelings come into it".

Their personal feelings are absolutely irrelevant to the post. Whoever gets to be our next Prime Minister has a "job to do" regardless.

Presumably the same would apply in the almost inconceivable event that Marine Le Pen wins the Presidential Election in France (as that would be after 31 March 2017) and she is reported to have said 'What are they going to do - send tanks?'

If a big sovereign nation wants out it will get out. But it would certainly ratchet up the tension

It won't matter what the leave majority of the electorate want - they have no say in who becomes leader of the Conservative Party.

The candidates will put their 'hats in the ring'

If there are more than 2 candidates, the Conservative MPs will vote until the 2 top candidates remain.

There will then be a postal vote amongst the Conservatative Party membership to vote the new leader.

The winner of the postal vote will become leader.

Because the Conservatives are in government the new leader of the Conservative party becomes Prime Minister.

It won't matter if the new PM is Leave or Remain. They will be voted in on their ability to get the job done.

As leading Brexiters such as Boris and Gove haven't covered themselves in glory since result of the referendum, I feel it increasingly unlikely their colleagues and party members would want to entrust the job of Leader to them

I think it was GreyQueen who told us how to do it.

Get an empty, washed (obvs :p) tuna or salmon can. Tightly roll up some corrugated cardboard in a spiral to fit snuggly in the can. Pour melted candle wax over it until full (you can buy wax pellet things, but i just save stubs of candles and tea lights, grate them and melt them in a food can in a water bath - doees that make sense? grate the wax, pour in a tomato can for example. Place in a pan of boiling water to melt, then pour over the cardboard).

The cardboard should not come much above the tin. I then stick a couple of matches in it and light them. I put it in the fire bowl of the KK. It takes a bit longer to boil than a normal fire but it doesn't need fuelling and doesn't go out. In fact the worse thing is putting it out - which is why I thought i might make some smaller ones so that i can use one per day. I easily get several kettles full of boiling water out of one (i have the largest size). Some of the wax i used this time was from scented candles - so it smelled rather lovely :rotfl:

Apologies, I wasn't trying to divide, there's been enough of that (although there is a certain amount of glee on here regarding the result), I just wondered how the result is going to happen....

Never mind me, I'm a bit jetlagged. It may have only been Somerset, but it was half a world away...

Firstly, pleased you enjoyed it, mud and all.
I'm also wondering what will satisfy Leave voters, since what has been mentioned since the result by the leading lights of the Leave campaign does not seem to match the expectations they created during the campaign.

Someone has seriously misread the Lisbon Treaty - only the nation state concerned can invoke Article 50 (and the Prime Minister can do so without either parliamentary or cabinet approval). Once invoked the 2 year clock starts ticking and negotiations on the post membership treaties/relationship begin. As the UK will require a mixed treaty (finances as well as trade) the resulting treaty will not only have to be ratified by the European Parliament but also by the Parliaments of the 27 remaining states - and will require the approval of all 27 - qualified majority voting would seem an easier option (if it applied). Qualified Majority Voting may affect any attempt to extend the negotiations beyond the two year time frame.
If at the end of two years there is no treaty in place, then both sides would be free to impose what ever tariffs and restrictions they wished on each other.
  • I read an article yesterday, (sorry don't know how to do links), saying that the Italian government may have to bail out their banks to the tune of 40 billion euro. Apparently, they have been teetering on the brink for years and Brexit pushed things over the edge.

:) It was just something I copied of t'interweb, VJsMum, and very easy for me to do as I melt and remake old candles into new ones as a bit of a hobby, and I eat tuna. So, along with corrugated cardboard, I had all the makings anyway.

Hopefully my pal in the FTSE 100 company is sleeping a little easier as their employer's price is climbing slightly. It's down at levels last seen 24 months ago but still much higher than levels 36 months ago. Let's hope no one feels so distraught about being slightly-less valuable that they throw themselves off a building. Well, nothing bigger than a dog kennel, anyway.

Last time I looked, the world was still turning and the politicians were still squabbling and jostling like slo-mo sharks trying to pretend it's not a feeding frenzy. Opportunities like these for sudden advancements don't happen that often.

    Interesting times.
