Mila - it's on the interwebthingie therefore it's true! ;)

My favourite is from Thoreau (from Civil Disobedience?) which I'll paraphrase as it's something I read a long time ago (student days) and can't find online -

Anyone willing to stand for public office should be automatically barred from holding same because of that willingness.

(Of course my decaying memory may be playing tricks.)

    That's from Douglas Adams isn't it? :)
“The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.
To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.”

I am with you Monna (1943 er) Rationing wouldn't bother me at all as I was 11 when it finished :):):) probably wouldn't do us a lot of harm to revert to O/S food for a change. no crisps (I don't eat them anyway ) very little sugar (again apart from caster sugar I don't keep any indoors )Lots of veg (that gets my vote as I love veg) Rhubarb and custard is a favourite in my house (I have a prolific 'crown' in my garden)

Long as I can have my cuppa and the occasional fresh ground coffee i am happy with a diet from the 1040s although I do draw the line at Woolton pie I hated it and Snoek which was disgusting tinned fish.

Sardines on toast anyone :):):) or bread and dripping :):):)

I had sardines on toast for lunch yesterday! They're much nicer now you can get them boneless!!!

The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter. Winston Churchill

It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried. Winston Churchill

The problems of victory are more agreeable than those of defeat, but they are no less difficult. Winston Churchill

And what was his (and indeed what is your) suggestion for a better alternative?

Simples. Druids and the Brehon system

Have a leisurely browse, and search other links.

The Brehon system was centuries ahead of its time on many subjects - female property and inheritance rights, divorce (one acceptable reason being male impotence presumably as a result of recognising the right of females to sexual satisfaction), recognition of !!!!!exual relationships, judges had to be both poets and warriors, treatment of the elderly and the sick, etc etc

Churchill was a massive tax dodger. So not really interested in his views on society!

    I note this.
If a woman makes an assignation with a man to come to her in a bed or behind a bush, the man is not considered guilty even if she screams.

So, once a woman agrees to meet a man for the evening, she's consenting to sex?

I've just been reading about U-boats on Wikipedia. Can you believe Germany are indeed still making them? This is a U32:

The meaning of "to come to her in a bed or behind a bush"(7thC) - is, I suspect, slightly different to "meeting for the evening" (21stC). ;)

Even if "to come to her in a bed or behind a bush" means invites him to have sex with her, she's not allowed to change her mind?
