:) I don't glory in the current misfortune of thriftwizard's youngsters. But she has posted many a time about the difficulty of having a houseful of young adults who can't afford a place to live in her region.

Fewer people in the country should reduce rents (which is why Landlordzone is in a strop) and reduce house prices.

Both these things should benefit her young people, as they will benefit other young people. There will be swings and roundabouts.

OK, going out for the day, have a good one. GQ x

And now there is an online petition asking for a new referendum. If that does happen, I have no doubt that the vote would go the other way.

Then we can have another referendum, and another, and another, ad infinitum.

It works in the way it is designed to, ie. decisions based on the wishes of the majority.

    I can't think of a better alternative.

How about we look to the future and think today about how we will get ourselves collectively through the transitory and difficult time that inevitably lies ahead. The past is just that and can't be changed no matter how much we want it to, what is vitally important now is to prepare for the changes that must come about with the exit from the familiar and make changes and contingency plans to see us through to the future that we will have. I will keep prepping along the same lines as I always have done so food, meds, seeds, tools, a couple of sturdy pairs of shoes in the bottom of the wardrobe, a spare warm coat if I find one and keep growing as much of our own food as we can. I'll upkeep our property, look after and repair the posessions we have and make all of it as good as I can and keep it in good repair. I'll part with as little of our income as I can and make what I do part with work as hard for us as I possibly can. I will live my life and adapt to things I have no influence over. As a human being I can't do more than that. I will live today, tomorrow and until my allotted tome is up as well and as contentedly as I am able!

I wholeheartedly agree with this post. Well said!!
  • I must say that I've been surprised to see what I regard as "MY" groups doing things online (seem to recall Avast and 38 Degrees for instance petitioning against)! I'm more "Green Party" than owt else politically-speaking and very disappointed at the stand taken on this. I can only think of one Facebook "friend" that is also pleased and all other Facebook groups/people unanimously screaming upset about this.

I admit to being astonished that groups/people I perceive as positive/like-minded generally are doing this. I guess its just down to being used to using "sharp elbows" to get what we want - well our sharp elbows are not appropriate on this occasion. End of...

But I say little - as I've had to spend quite some time "steaming" at the number of times I've been called racist online - when I know blimmin' well I'm definitely not - but I suppose it was the nearest insult that came to hand <shrugs>.

If someone voted Brexit as a "protest vote" - rather than really meaning it - then there is a phrase that comes to mind here "You made your bed - so you lie on it". I think we've all done protest votes before now - and had to take personal responsibility for the fact that we did so.

But I dont actually believe that more than a tiny proportion of votes were "protest votes" - rather than "real" votes - iyswim.

The sky is honestly not going to "fall in tomorrow" as per one of my childhood reading books (Chicken Licken wasnt it?).

We came through "the exit from the familiar", when we joined.

I'm sure we'll come through it again, as we leave.

No verification Thomas Jefferson ever said this quote.

I didn't say Democracy was perfect.

What I said was, I can't think of a better alternative.

Compulsory voting......do they have a system like that in Australia, or am I thinking of another country?

Yup. Vote or be fined. They're very strict about it too and make it possible for anyone under any circumstances to do so. As I must next Saturday.

And what was his (and indeed what is your) suggestion for a better alternative?
