Quick update for you all...that you may not hear on the news......thousands of people are surrounding the Greek parliament in Athens tonight (the night of the vote) and there are hundreds of thousands on the roads all over Greece heading for the cities to demonstrate their feelings about the austerity measures and what they think of the politicians......will try to get more updates later...the vote is at midnight....

Here is a link to a live streaming video from Athens......the ads stop after a few seconds and it goes live....as you can see its absolutely hissing down with rain....

craigwyv, well done hunny,I am pleased for you, sounds like a great job too.

I have lined a lot of the shed with polystyrene sheets from packaging so it keeps the rabbit a bit warmer, I do worry about him. We used to have lots of guinea pigs and rabbits that we rescued but are not replacing them any more, I think I will have to consider setting up the rescue centre again soon though, as the other rescue places are full to the brim. Am going to stock up on supplies for them asap and then fill up the hutches.

Dd has been rescuing snakes lately as people havent got the time or money to look after them so she has rather a lot of them now. Her Oh is very knowledgable about them and works wonders. She took 2 gecko's off a friend who hadnt fed them for days and they were very sad little animals, after 3 weeks they are doing well.

The trouble is the recession is hitting so many aspects of peoples lives that they cannot cope with commitments like pets, not everyone is like our lovely MSE'ers who care for their animals. I have already started working on Dd to ensure she has adequate supplies and preps for the animals.

Just realised though there is some room in the shed for tins :j so will sneak them in when I get a chance :D

The banks have been a bit precarious for the last couple of years. No one I know is keeping more than they have to in the bank. We leave our money in the UK where my OH pension is paid and only bring over what we need to live on. If the Greek euro crashes the plan is to close the banks until the money in your account is changed to the new currency and devalued. During the change over there will be no bank or ATM machines and they will not be able to take credit cards. The Greek banks are borrowing on loans to pay off money they borrowed to refinance and it can't go on forever. You can't borrow your way out of debt no matter who you are. Greek euro accounts are supposed to be protected against loses but if the bank/government is bankrupt who is going to come up with the money to pay you back?

My friend in this case is retiring as she feels its a good time to get out of business here and move elsewhere. Having said that, many of the Brits are leaving as they can no longer cope here on their pensions and the ones who work here in the summer will no longer get unemployment benefit in the winter if they had it in previous years....even if they have paid contributions all year!
just seen it on sky news petrol bombs and tier gas in Athens it must be really bad getting

Not been around for a while and haven't had chance to catch up yet...

2tonsils, it sounds worrying, I must say I've seen nothing on the news about Greece or even Europe - just the US elections. Hmm. I know that affects us but it's also convenient to nmot mention other things going on...

Anyone else seen this? http://www.buzzfeed.com/emofly/21-awesome-emergency-perparedness-hacks a few neat little tricks there. Also saw Biolite that looks like a good-idea-if-you-have-the-spare-cash http://www.biolitestove.com/campstove/camp-overview/features/

I think I need to look again at dehumidifiers - I've just got nowhere truly dry :(

The police starting firing tear gas at a crowd who were just demonstrating, then someone started throwing the Molotov cocktails....they must be rich anarchists with petrol at 1.75 a litre (JOKE)..........now the police are using water canons on everyone to try to break up the crowds. It also looks like there is hell on inside the parliament as they are all arguing like crazy and throwing evidence of tax fiddling at each other.....its looking nasty in there as well.

Off to watch V for Vandetta after the news, I did wonder if its some kind of signal for a rebellion tonight when I saw it advertised.....nothing would surprise me at the moment. The ordinary people can't take any more. One of the measures allows a wage of 2 euros an hour to be paid to employees.....after ten years of service. They are cutting disability unless you are above 85 percent disabled...no unemployment money for people even though they pay contributions up to 800euros a month when they work....and no cancer/heart/kidney drugs as the government haven't paid for drugs for the last two years.

It's all going to end in tears.....

The Daily Telegraph Finance section has a live update each day on the debt crisis and it has pictures of what is going on in Syntagma Square as well as a live feed.

Apparently the finance minister wanted to bring the pay of parliament's staff in line with the rest of the Civil Service (ie down!) and they threatened to strike which would have delayed the vote so he had to withdraw the amendment. Cue scenes of mayhem in parliament

Well, 25cm of snow today. It took 65 minutes to get home (usually takes 20). Nine ambulances waiting to get into my hospital emergency as we drove out. And we passed three more heading in on the road.

Thank gawd the freezer is full. Hopefully, the husband will get his act together and put something in the oven.

The weekend is looking hideous with all temps well below 0C.
