Oh, I do like coffee - best & simplest done in a cafetiere; I even take mine camping - but I like cider even better!

Missed the beginning but came in when one of her many kids was demonstrating his home made candle/taper - basically a reed which had been dipped in fat.
I missed the part about how they funded the farm in the first place. It seems to me that money is still the backer for many back to nature lives. For example woodland woman actually owned the land from her previous existence.
Sorry i don't post much but been busy, this reminds me of how we used to get light at night in prison (don't ask) when the lights had been turned out, we used to use the foil from the top of a Marvel milk carton (used to keep it fresh), make a tiny hole in the middle of the foil, then you take a strand from a string mop head and soak that in baby oil for an hour or two, then we used a metal base and right now i can't remember what that was but it was the same size as the foil and you put a small amount of ol under the foil to feed the "wick" and bingo away you went light all night and it works like a charm.

Don't laugh but we found Johnson's (soz about spelling but the famous brand) gave the brightest light, just a little tip for people, i also have another youtube video hanging about somewhere how you can make a nice little heater out or nite light and a couple of plant post (not plastic).

    Evening all.

I had a lovely date with new gf yesterday. We went to 'The Vyne' in Hampshire for lunch and a walk round.

    http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/the-vyne if you're interested.

My date was slightly spoilt, as usual by my bl**dy satnav. About 6 years ago I bought a Tomtom, but found it would not find the satellites for about ten minutes after switching on. (How useful!)

Three years ago I invested in a Garmin Nuvi, and plugged it in yesterday to find The Vyne. Once again the bl**dy thing could not find the satellites. I had to get gf to direct me by reading from her iphone.

On the way home, the iphone seemed to take us via Newbury, so it took nearly an hour to get back, which also annoyed me.

Does anyone have a make that tolerates not being plugged in for 6 months without forgetting where the satellites are?

You need to make sure you plug in regularly to get software updates jk0. TomTom are constantly releasing updates that help make it slightly quicker to find satellites. Not sure where in reading you live, but sending you home via Newbury seems rather odd unless there was a traffic issue (assuming you have traffic info on it). Generally I find my TomTom pretty good - but I switch it on pretty much every time I get in the car, just to keep it on its toes...

Glad you had a good time :) Maybe the satnav issue will be a bonding experience ;)

From me too ... I'm increasingly aware that I could be in your situation at a moment's notice. I hope things improve overnight, thriftwizard.

Thank you, GQ & Karmacat; they've put her on some new medication & she's feeling a little better, if not sounding it. It'll be some time before she's pronounced stable, though, and it looks like they'll place her in one of our three cottage hospitals after that to regain what functions she can. One's in my town, one's in the town ten miles up the road, but the other is at the other end of the county! Luckily much closer to two of my brothers, though. Just hoping they'll be happy to take on her washing...

I'm just about having panic attacks about my beautiful van, though; the fuel bills over the last three weeks have been astronomical, though she hasn't let me down once and I feel very safe hurtling round the rural roads after dark in her. And Mum now can't clamber into it... should have thought that one through! But I suppose I wasn't to know this would happen. She does do the job I bought her for, very capably and without missing a beat, but at a cost...

Thriftwizard - that sounds a little bit better. What's the layout of your van? My brother transported my mum when she broke her leg, from the south coast up to northern England, she laid out in the back of his camper van! And certainly, you couldn't have known this would happen, it was very fast, wasn't it :(

RAS, I pressed the "translate" button on the on-site reviews, and it looks like its fairly good for its size, but needs its dedicated power bank for most efficient use, and you really need to pay attention to the focus on the sun. Powerbank makes it a really expensive investment, of course :( I'm interested, let us know what you decide.

I use a TomTom app on the iPhone - much better than having separate kit. It is very rare (aka never) that The Vyne to Reading would be best via Newbury but the app, with live traffic, sometimes sends you south to Basingstoke rather than through Bramley etc.
