Preparedness for when

Reading the article on preppers and the weapons shop - it's a bit ironic that he sees the confederate flag as a symbol of freedom and then says its about not relying on anybody else, just yourself.... Freedom for some of the people under that flag, and the others did nothing whatever for themselves!0

Ikea do very good value glass Kilner type jars. In fact I prefer their 2litre size ones because they are taller and thinner and just happen to fit perfectly on the bottom shelf of my kitchen cupboard. I am moving away from storing stuff in plastic as much as possible. Even the newer tubs which supposedly don't contain BPA smell quite strongly of plastic which I worry about leaching out into whatever is stored in there. It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

I keep flour and lentils in the bottom of the fridge, just because there's tons of room in there. Not sure how long the flour will keep for but it's one bag of plain SR and bread, in case of emergency.
Nothing as bad as a rock bun emergency or an apple sponge emergency..

When I look at photo's like those I appreciate the work that William Beveridge did. Having identified 'Giant Evils' in society he went about trying to initiate reform didn't he?
Times for some are no where near as rough as what was experienced back then but I do believe that the 'giant evils' are as much to do with a person's outlook based on their experiences. In order to eradicate those 'evils' I feel support needs to be there to prop up folk in times of need so they don't psychologically fall into the above traps.
Many roll their eyes about the situation some of my generation are in at the moment - let your mind wander with stereotypes all you like - but the people living those stereotypes have had input from people of other generations, input from policy, have been molly coddled instead of being propped up for a short term and have been given to based on computer says yes without having the human element, the empathy, the drive and gee up etc.
Of course this is all my own opinion but I just feel that those that roll their eyes at the people of my generation who fulfil negative stereotypes are no different to the people who fulfilled them back in the 1940's and therefore we all have to look at our roll in society and accept responsibility. Molly coddling helps no one in the long term and is as damaging in terms of disease, squalor, ignorance, want and idleness as no support in the first place.
As a society we're stuck now I feel. Without the massive financial support those that would suffer without it, really would suffer. A country is only as strong as the support it gives to the needy and I think Beveridge had the right idea... I just think it's been skewed to the point of collapse. It's not individuals fault, it's everything that our society has become I feel.
So when there's eye rolls at individuals, their choices and their circumstances I get a bit 'humph'. They are victims of societies' evils as much as folks back in 1942 were, in my opinion.
The other big issue is that support is being taken mostly from the rest of society whilst the 1% who could afford to cover it all and still be well off have all the tools, contacts and polictical clout to avoid paying.
In this country 1% at the top have the same amount of wealth as the bottom 55% and we are in the top 5 most unequal economies. YET we still have huge welfare bills.
The recent proposed tax credit cuts aren't a bad idea long term, BUT they have to greatly increase the wages for ev1 in the bottom half of society to make up for it. The rich who support and make all their money mostly via banks and large corporations could afford it, they are just greedy and don't want to do it.

It would appear that history was not his strong subject.
The fact that many are now more prepared to admit to themselves at least that they are prepping is that they do not have faith in the government safety nets any longer. That is not a good sign overall. Even if you are just prepping for redundancy the fact that the safety net has been shredded by government after government means that should it ever happen people will suddenly be vilified as a scrounger because they lost their job. Which is very bad for society cohesion. At least he was right about prepping for likely events and making good suggestions like savings and paying off mortgages. It's really easy to default to cynicism these days, since you are almost always certain to be right.0 -
Just googled my little beasties and they were definitely grain weevils not pantry beetles, so my chocolate is safe lol.
Been sorting out my outside store commonly know as the shed lol. Ours is a big shed and OH put shelves, carpet and electric in so can store food in there. BUT in winter if very cold can get a bit of condensation on the far side so I have to watch tins at that end of the shed. Mind a quick wipe around now and then seems to work.
Dry goods are all sealed and I try to keep ontop of dates. Great space for the extra freezers and those bits of kitchen stuff you only use now and again.
After sorting I labeled my tins with the BB dates on top with a pen -ty to whoever had that idea, think it was someone on here. Now organised with oldest stuff to front newest to back.
Realised after sorting I have a load of tinned spuds and dried spuds all coming close to date so would love any creative ideas to use up so I can replace with longer dated items. I know things don't go bad immediately on the BB date, but they will likely taste better.
Got even more bags of dried fruit so defo need to get on with a crimbo cake and the homemade mincemeat shortly. May wait till next week till after half term tho lol.
