We've got many pots of seedlings growing on nicely on the windowsill in our bedroom, including some very nice healthy basil which will go into the polytunnel. He Who Knows has peas up and sprouted in the greenhouse which will again go up the netting down the middle of the tunnel for a nice early crop, they do well in there. He's up the garden now sifting and spreading the compost bins, he's going to mulch the asparagus bed with a good dressing to warm it up and get the plants going. No sign of fat green buds on the fruit trees and bushes yet although the rhubarb plantation on the lottie has opened its eyes and is making early but slow growth. This year I'm aiming to use everything we produce in some way or other, be it eating it, freezing it, pickling/jamming/chutneying it. bottling it or dehydrating it. We should live well next winter if I can do that.0

I suppose prepping also includes dealing with bickering on internet forums
Lot of talk in the Scottish political forums about the latest round of welfare cuts by Iain Duncan Smith who lives in his father in laws £2million mansion.. if you are vulnerable at all in any way, please vote this verminous govt out in May. I feel almost murderous when I read what they're doing.
I had a local Mum in at half seven this morning for "coffee" and "Oh! seeing as you are here have some breakfast too kids!!"
Her family has been sanctioned for a letter that hasn't arrived ... so they are out of options (And food) until the foodbank later today.
I wish she had told me earlier - but people struggle on in silence don't they?
So ... well tonight I am out canvassing and sticking leaflets through doors cos I will hanged if I will see kids go hungry in my country.
Rant over (BTW just been stuck all over by jaggy things in the dentist so this morning has been a sucky one) Happiness will reign after a medicinal pot of tea has been administered.
On the upside - no snow today

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:I think eating marmite out of a jar with a teaspoon for the previous fortnight before my appointment should have given a clue as to what was really wrong with me:o
So, having a large stock of Marmite is not advisable when the brown stuff strikes?I suppose prepping also includes dealing with bickering on internet forums

I'd say having a decent government would probably be the best prep any of us could make - unfortunately I don't see any of the available options as decent. Though remembering something from last week's Last Leg, on the lines of " If you think there all as bad as each other, you're wrong, some of them are worse" perhaps its simply choosing the least worst option (and hoping they don't reveal their true colours later).
Memory Girl well done on being able to produce the extra meals and the shoulder as support - more than anything these days its what I see prepping is about.
I've also been involved in a sanctioning case where a letter never arrived - in this case the family were homeless and temporarily housed in a B'n'B. The B'n'B had a logbook of all post received, no record of the alleged missing letter, even that and an MPs involvement wasn't enough to get the benefit reinstated.0 -
As it's sunny (but still fairly chilly out in the wind), I've just had a break from work to do some more clearing up in the garden. Three bags of leaves and other garden waste ready for disposal. There's a LOT to do out there!0

Hello all,
I lurk but have never posted on this thread. Just been catching up on the gold discussion; what do people think is too much to keep in the bank in case of a bail in? Opinions will vary I know but I'm keen to get a rough idea, if anyone cares to throw in a number.0 -

More than £85,000 is at risk, though many here keep much less.0 -
I'm hazarding a personal guess at £10,000 myself - as that seems to me like an amount quite a few of yer "ordinary person in the street" people will have. I doubt the Government would feel very "safe in their beds/constituencies" if they went for people on that sort of level.
Not that I have that sort of amount in the bank myself at present - I wish - but that's not wealthy person standard/that's hit too many people for MP's to feel their seats were safe level standard.0 -

Thanks, I should have been clear that I didn't mean the fscs level, interested in the much less level. I guess I'm keen to make sure that I prep for all eventualities, including that tsdoesn'thtf - I'm not anywhere near but there could theoretically come a stage where food, supplies, hardware etc is sufficient, knowledge has been/is being acquired but there is still surplus cash. There's only so much cash I want to have at home indefinitely and I'm pondering the balance plus the shorter term likelihood of government bail in vs home burglary.
Obviously I can mitigate the risks of losing it all in a burglary by splitting the stash and the gold discussion prompted me to consider other ways of storing 'money' that might be easier to hide.0 -
Hello all,
I lurk but have never posted on this thread. Just been catching up on the gold discussion; what do people think is too much to keep in the bank in case of a bail in? Opinions will vary I know but I'm keen to get a rough idea, if anyone cares to throw in a number.
I aim to keep 2.5 times the standard monthly outgoings, anything above that is withdrawn unless I'm planning a substantial purchase that fortnight. (I will top the account up to cover purchases that drop me below the planned margin, but can't be bothered to visit the bank more than fortnightly)
The logic is roughly this, as I'm self employed my income is variable and clients don't always (almost never) pay on time, therefore keeping two months outgoings means I have an additional month's safety margin to chase clients or correct the balance. I do keep some cash at home and in my vehicles, I also have a savings account with another bank.
Given the current available returns on money on deposit, I have no incentive to keep money in the bank, particularly as my suppliers give discounts for cash which is a far better return than I'd get from a bank.
I don't worry about bail in limits - I'm not likely to return to that income level - but any advice you get is a guess, remember Cypress started with the idea that a small percentage from every account was a good idea. At some point, a government will revisit that starting point, possibly with a sliding scale of "contribution" based on the amounts held.0 -
I was told of a piece in the local paper last week about the water company here faces prosecution for poisonous parasites having been found in the water supply. Apparently it was found in 2013 and their systems have been updated but that's a bit too close for comfort really.
These spats online are getting tiresome. I have heard of some unsavoury things, things that I am not getting involved in. I have quit another thread and said categorically here that I am capable of being in the same environment as people whom I don't necessarily get along with. I don't know the ins and outs of everything as I haven't been online all week.
I will say that I do have an opinion and I do speak out when I feel I have a point to make. I am certainly not alone in that, especially on this thread. I won't apologise as I have not done anything wrong. MrsL and I are friends in real life. She knows a heck of a lot about some things that it wouldn't be fair to air on here. If she reacted brusquely it is because there is a lot going on behind the scenes. She's my friend after all. Erm, I come on OS to learn, relax and interact with like minded people. I am not interested in games and still the games are going on without me even posting for 3 days. It's a ludicrous situation that has nothing to do with prepping. So sorry this thread has got caught up in it but it will happen no more as I am cutting all ties where they need to be cut.0
