BLACKBERRY LEAF TEA - Pick the tender new leaves of bramble on a dry day. Shred them with a stainless steel knife and spread them out to dry (I would use the dehydrator) in the shade or an airy room. This might take three or four days. Don't pick or dry them in the sun. Store as normal in an airtight container and turn them out often and let them re-dry to keep them from going mouldy. Use just like ordinary tea, it says that it should taste like indian tea.
As there are so many blackberry bushes in this country and any leaves would be free I thought this might be something useful to have in the repertoire of preparedness.
If it doesn't work or is horrid, appologies in advance if you're brave enough to try it!!! Cheers Lyn x.
Blackcurrant leaf tea was used in the past in place of, or to bulk out, black tea. It was used dried, and brewed just like ordinary tea. I have tried it myself, with fresh leaves, and it made a very acceptable drink, with a faint flavour of black tea, so I can see that it would have made economic sense use it to eke out the expensive stuff, without too much change of flavour.0 -
This is getting worrying

MADRID (AP) — The Spanish Red Cross has launched its first ever campaign for donations to help people in the country hit by the economic crisis.
The Red Cross and other aid groups say soaring unemployment and government austerity measures are leaving tens of thousands of people in need of food and financial help.
While the Spanish Red Cross does already help people in the country, its fundraising has always been directed at helping poorer nations.
Wednesday's campaign aims to collect €30 million ($39 million) over two years to help an extra 300,000 people. The agency helped some 2 million in Spain last year, most of who needed aid because of the crisis.
The agency set up collection points in cities across Spain and thousands of volunteers paced the streets seeking contributions.
Even worse

I have a recipe for blackcurrant leaf tea in a wartime cookery book, I was really wondering how it tasted. Isn't it great that we have the wartime books to refer to? Because then, the S did the HTF for us in this country and we can learn from their experience.0

I'm now going to source plastic boxes to fit on the shelves.
It's very exciting.....Ohhh, lucky find. Most envious.
Regarding mice, they are little bu88gers and can dislocate their skeleton and literally squirm though a space no bigger then the thickness of a pencil, so it might be an idea to examine the cabinet very carefully to make sure there is no tiny space they could squirm through. They got into my Nan's pantry down a space alongside some electrical cabling which came down from the loft space.
This particular mouse had a very select palette; cooking chocolate and curry powder. It chewed through a very heavy-duty plastic tub to get the cooking chocolate, darn it.
Nan tried baiting the mousetrap with cheese but no takers. I baited it with an Elizabeth Shaw Choc Mint Crisp and caught the beggar the first day.I did contemplate emailing the manufacturer with my compliments on the attractiveness of their product to vermin but didn't bother in the end...............:rotfl:

I've reported (holds head in hands) a couple of posts for trolling and bullying - however that puts the thread at risk of being shut down. Unfortunately I dont currently have access to check which IP addresses are being used to post from but it should be fairly easy to work out which strange individual(s) feels the need to have duplicate log ins at which point all accounts relative to that IP address will probably have posting privs removed (PPR)which will mean we can once again post in peace about prepping oldstyle. isnt it nice to be so popular that people are jealous enough to feel the need to bully those of us who are kind enough to share how we build our resources.
