  • There you go NOO, your special skill is discloser of facts and peacemaker doesn't come more necessary than that!!! Cheers Lyn x.
  • Today is a day for making lists.

I'm going to start with what we use.

    Then what we have got.

Then what we can do about it.

Our staples for example are rice, pasta. bread and tea.

Can get / store 3 of those but what about bread.

I can not make it. I've tried normal bread, bread machines, bread mixes even artisan bread and non of it works.

I have to say it runs in the family, if Mum ever tried to make bread we would throw a roll to the chickens first and if they could break it open we stood a chance!

So now I'm going to try flat bread.

If I can get that to work I will buy and store flour.

I'm going to go through a weeks typical food and plan for each element.

Well it's cold outside and dull and I haven't got any campers until Friday.

  • BB - have you tried making soda bread? It's much easier than yeasted bread and does the same job, there's an old wartime recipe for Baking Powder Bread that was made when fuel was limited, can pass it on if you want to try it, Cheers Lyn x.

Remember the worst time will be the hungry gap of spring and early summer 2013, before the new season's produce comes in, and also when the new raft of cuts come in April.

I'd like that recipe Mrs L, to pass it onto UKPreppers if that's ok?

    BAKING POWDER BREAD
    8 oz Self Raising Flour
    2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
    Pinch of Salt
    1oz margarine
    approx 1/4 Pint of Milk

Sift dry ingredients together in a bowl. Rub in the margarine. Add enough milk to make a soft mixture, should be slightly sticky. Roll into balls with floury hands (will make 10 - 12) Put on floured baking tray and cook for 10 ish minutes until golden and crisp. Oven 230deg C/Fan 210degC/450degF/Gas Mk7/8. They freeze well but are best eaten fresh.

MAR glad you're feeling a bit better, don't try and do too much or you'll set yourself back! Cheers Lyn xxx.

Feel free to pass on to anyone appropriate, L x.
  • Thanks Lyn I give soda bread a try.

With a fussy OH and yes if he doesn't like something he will go hungry ( a Leo and a bit like a cat will turn his nose up at food until you give in) and a 10 year old, I'm trying to replicate "normal" food.

If I've got to introduce something I'd like to get them used to it before there is a need.

Next Spring will be very interesting. I'm not sure if the weather is changing and if we need to look at growing differently, be that different varieties or different crops.

Thanks for the baking powder recipe I'll try that first.

At the moment it's rising prices that worry me most.

Thank you Vanoonoo for the gentle warning words at the start of the thread. See, you have a rare skill, diplomacy! If it had been me I would just have put a sign

Re. Soda bread, a lot of recipes give buttermilk as an essential ingredient, but unless you are in Ireland where you can buy it at a reasonable price by the litre, or if you regularly make your own butter, it is just as easy and effective to use yogurt, or failing that you can use your gone-off milk. If the milk is not gone off you can squeeze a bit of lemon juice or a few drops of vinegar to acidify it, so that it reacts better with the bicarb and gives a better raising. HTH
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

I have been shocked to the core this morning by an article on the Guardian site online.....here is the link to read it. I had better explain that the G*lden Da** is a fascist group that have democratically elected members in parlament here and they are growing in popularity.

I will do a normal update in a short while. I have some info to sort out for Vanoonoo. ;)
