    Hi Loopy,
I think that you have everything well covered. I hope I can stay put where I am. If I have to downsize, will there be room for my store of food and my kitchen gadgets? Just the usual stuff washer, cooker, tumble drier etc...As said before few if any small properties around here anyhow.

I have probably enough food to last at least six months(more as I eat less and have smaller portions, good long dates on what I have and I don't mind ating items past their best before dates)Have thirty bottles of water, 32 boxes of cereal, plenty of cartons of UHT milk and fruit juice. Not forgetting around 50 rolls of toilet rolls:p

Well now I can use what I have and not do "Big" shops and after the announcement about the rise in food prices expected that will keep me going a while...I don't want to have to use a food bank if I can help it as income reduces and most only have basics and allow you three visits annually.

I can ring the changes with what I have too. It is a safety net for when my income freezes/reduces as I expect or rather know will happen.

  • Today is a day for making lists.

I'm going to start with what we use.

    Then what we have got.

Then what we can do about it.

Our staples for example are rice, pasta. bread and tea.

Can get / store 3 of those but what about bread.

I can not make it. I've tried normal bread, bread machines, bread mixes even artisan bread and non of it works.

I have to say it runs in the family, if Mum ever tried to make bread we would throw a roll to the chickens first and if they could break it open we stood a chance!

So now I'm going to try flat bread.

If I can get that to work I will buy and store flour.

I'm going to go through a weeks typical food and plan for each element.

Well it's cold outside and dull and I haven't got any campers until Friday.

Is it a problem with your oven? Mine plays up sometimes and only cooks certain foods. Very annoying!

And my slow cooker isn't working properly. that's got nothing to do with bread, it's just annoying too...

By golly, the amount of times I've wished they did loyalty cards for the likes of £land and the 99P shop, I'd be onto a winner.

On Monday I had a washing machine mechanic here and I had a little bit of Prep-anxiety. By this I mean, should I hide the particular preps (2 litre bottles of water - several) which are stashed in the lightless hard-to-access niche made by the wm coming right up to the kitchen sink at right-angles?

I decided to say nowt and the geezer was too much of a gent (or didn't notice) to remark on it.

Anyone else hidden (or felt tempted to hide) preppy-type stuff ahead of a visit from a person not a family member or friend?

Ooh, yes, and I tell the taxi drivers 'Oh, I'm doing a month's shopping'.

GreyQueen - I am not a massive prepper but I always like to have quite a lot on my store (especially this time of year!). I had a workman come to check on some work that had been done previously and he moaned the whole time! He moaned about the blankets in a cupboard and the stash of loo roll then he had the cheek to comment on how many packets of cereal were in my store along with the fact I have a store (which is also my day to day cupboard as well as we have a teeny tiny kitchen so everything food wise goes in this cupboard).

I must admit to feeling really embarrassed by his comments :( he was also aghast that I had 3 children and that the living room had lots of toys laying around (this was a visit unannounced during the school holidays).

I dont know why I should feel embarrassed but I did.

If it happens again, complain to his company (when he's finished the work and gone...) I'm in a housing association property, and we get letters from the HA asking how the workman was (and if the work was done properly & on time), but anytime we can expect to be treated with respect.
  • We don't feel embarassed about the things we buy in general, just other peoples reactions to and comments about them. I'm sure none of us feel even a little bit silly about it!

I don't feel guilty and I find should I mention what I do, often someone will admit that they are doing it already or they often say that is a good idea and that they are going to start doing something similar. I cannot remember anyone reacting negatively or finding it funny.

I suspect many more will be doing this...

  • I've found a large metal cupboard, the kind they use in offices and I'm going to move it into the garage to use as a store. It should be mouse proof and is lockable.
I'm now going to source plastic boxes to fit on the shelves.
    It's very exciting.....

How rude, it was none of his business  I would certainly report him.
I had a meter reader come to my house once, and he said typical woman sitting on her @ watching telly all day  until he realised that I have difficulty walking :( What a total b-stew-ard needless to say DH went ballistic and reported him and told them if he came here again he would not be responsible for his actiions.
