  • I'd second an empty milk bottle with a screw top, the neck is quite wide & should be suitable for most men to use, especially if it's snowing, as cold does nothing to favour a gentleman's appendages, & believe me, with my history/knowledge I do know what I'm talking about!

Fuddle another nice addition to his supplies would be a large pair of those flip top mittens and some hand warmers ( those things you crack and they warm up.)

Fuddle, you can buy a male or female travel pee pot at the disability shops, of course the female on is twice the price. However if you turn a big milk container on its side and cut a hole in it you end up with the same thing. OH has an emergency pot as he has bladder problems and its worth its weight in gold. :o It is a problem that has to be adressed though. I think your car prep is an excellent idea especially with the area he travels.

I am happy with the stock of food I have made but need to address the meat problem. OH hates tinned fish and most tinned meat is very expensive or horrible. We have just been discussing it but havent a clue. I hate TVP (is that right?) as it gives me acid reflux. Anyone got any good ideas? Hubby is really on board now and has just bought me some extra milk powdered and LL from his budget. He also had a good laugh last night at some of your stories and is interested in 2tonsills situation.

Did someone mention wolf themed clothing? http://www.amazon.com/The-Mountain-Three-Short-Sleeve/product-reviews/B002HJ377A :D

Ginnyknit, have you considered drying meat? Anything from jerky to air dried hams, strung up in the shed? I have some....now so dried it's more a weapon than a dinner....!

ETA - for shorter term shtf you could confit things too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confit it's pretty idiot-proof, I've managed it :D
Have you also tried the packets of saltfish, if available in your area?

Now, I am a little interested in drying meat. It's expensive stuff and I have to resist [STRIKE]stuffing a whole joint of something big and dead down because I miss it[/STRIKE] waste. Is there a link for, say, beef?

Confit & saltfish, _pale_ not my thing.

    Morrisons do dried salted cod.
You may find it in Asian/African supermarkets as well.

I have salted and dried prawns and they were perfect.
I got the technique from a dehydrator book when I couldn't find any in local shops. They are soaked in heavily salted water overnight first.

I used them to make a West African dish my dad used to make.
It uses onions fried in a little palm oil, tinned tomatoes, stock cube, water, black eyed beans, tinned and dried fish. Garlic and tom puree if you wish.
Seasoning, and you can add a little red pepper if you like. Delicious. We sprinkle a little dried cassava on top when served.

You can make the whole thing from dried/tinned food.
The dried shrimp/prawns are lovely, they have a unique texture and flavour.

By the way, my prawns were frozen before I dried them.
