Be careful if you have your money in the bank that you spread it around. The new bank rescue rules mean that any deposits above the deposit protection scheme will be raided if there is a banking crisis. The only benefit of keeping cash is if there is complete anarchy but there will be signs of problems at the banks so we should basically empty our accounts at the first sign of trouble.

Nowhere near the limit for being raided but it is spread around anyway so that if one bank has issues like Natwest did I can still access cash via other banks.

I could understand it if a little elderly person was getting a large amount of cash out, especially if there was a "builder, roofer or any other" stood right next to them because it does happen that they are bullied into getting out large amounts by cowboys. Someone needs to question a withdrawal then but for most people it is insulting.

Not entirely sure of the conversation here--my fault for butting in so do please excuse me :o --but I seem to recall a tip that if you are withdrawing cash under duress, you type in your PIN in reverse. The money should still be delivered but the authorities are alerted to what is going on. Thank the Stars & All Above, I've had no reason to test the theory.

I just keep as much spare cash as will see me through a month or so, or if I'm saving up for something.

:D Oh, our usual random mixture of the sensible and the deliciously silly.

Water cannon (use of in "austerity riots"), restrictions on getting your money out of your bank, thrifty comforting recipes, the potential of the Ford Transit van as a speed-mobile, suspicions that something is rotten in the state of [STRIKE]Denmark[/STRIKE] economy, possibilities of saving to buy houses/ working woodlands, handy links to articles, to other sites inc some good U Tube stuff.

Erm, not sure how far back you were last reading but that's the past few daze, I think.

Have robbed The Beast of some of it's fodder and now have most of my salary in my possession, not the bank's. I'm happy with that as I can trust myself not to overspend. When my rent and utility DDs go off in the next week, there should be a float of about £150 left. I don't spend much day-to-day, just bits and pieces of cash on food and the odd treat such as a telly series I have rented from the library on DVD.

Am now about to cruise the chazzers and take the temperature of the local economy via a natter with my Magic Greengrocer and a few other shop-keeping acquaintances (have spoken to one already this morning). We're on the shabbier side of town and if people are hurting for money in Provincial City, it will become apparent here, first. Such as when the MG noticed peeps had obviously been raiding their coin jars to buy veggies, they were coming in with lots of shrapnel.

    :( That's never a good sign, imo.

That's an urban myth - see here: http://www.snopes.com/business/bank/pinalert.asp

If you think about it, if you're under stress how could you remember your pin backwards, let alone forwards!

Given that putting the wrong pin in doesn't work, I'd have been surprised if it worked backwards. I guess if you're under pressure the thing to do is to get it wrong enough times to lock your account/get the card swallowed and then have to go into a branch where you can alert someone to the problem...

I can remember my pin backwards quite easily. Always when I'm trying to remember the bloody thing the right way round!
