  • Just watching BBC news 24 'Click' talking about ways to obstruct the way cameras continually take your picture when out and about. Really interesting trying to trick face detection software, and how authorities can track you. Makes you think how many times you appear on camera. I live out in the countryside so I'm not aware of any cameras which catch me on the way to work. But once at work, we have cameras watching everywhere.

I have been to the bank too and removed some cash. Trouble is I have a savings account too with the bank. My idea is to move that to a savings account I have with a building society. Though then worrying whether that's safe also.

I'm investing in my house and having a new kitchen put in. Thinking its best to put money to that use. I'm mortgage free now and a pensioner. In time I will probably have to sell the house and move elsewhere. Not for a few years yet though. :)

Have not trusted the banks for ages.

Just seen a share on FB which says the HSBC bank is on the verge of collapse. Not been able to find anything more about this or verify it.

I'm a lurker but love reading the thread and getting tips.

Sorry egg on face. Just caught up with previous page.
:) Lovely to have you de-lurk, please post more often.

There's been rumours about the solvency of HSBC for some time. I wonder if this shoot-in-foot business with trying to restrict the amounts people can withdraw is due to concerns about how much they have on deposit to return, whether it is in response to some political moves to control people via their money, whether a "wealth tax" is being readied and they want to get their hands on as much as possible of our money, or whether it is just crass stupidity.

I always remember MSE stalwart squeaky's (RIP) a sig line; Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence.

We will have to wait and see. I have skin in this game so will be watching the doings of that bank v.closely indeed.

  • Old Fashioned bit of knowledge of the day is that the leaves of the common mallow made into an infusion is an antispetic, I didn't know that but read it in a prepping book last night. You can also make an antispetic from thyme made into an infusion.

It's on the BBC site here:

although as it happens we now have the HB book with it in (bought on the strength of this particular recipe :)). Talking of curry, stocked up on a load of spices which were half-price in T3sco this morning, some kind of end-of-line thing, still in date for a couple of years. Usually buy our spices from the Asian grocer in town but at those prices it would be rude not to :o

Thanks for that, I look forward to trying it. My eldest bought me a cookery folder for Christmas so I am filling it with recipes that we either already love or have come with a recommendation.

All this bank stuff worries the heck out of me. I don't have much money myself just TC and CB as well as CSA. I would love to take it all out asap but the kids' schools are all 'cashless' and EVERYTHING has to be done online! Course these are the same schools that put all their homework online with no regard to whether the children have access at home as they can apparently do their work in school - except when the teachers can't stay/pc's are broken/insert other reason school isn't able to provide the facility.

It's no fun trying to sort time on the family pc for 3 children to do their homework especially when one is A-level, and another GCSE!

  • For thrifty comfort food, I give you: Souperdooper. ;)

As made by many generations of my family, and learned at the arm of my nan (former school canteen and police station cook from the days when both served real food).

Your base is a can of tomato soup, or homemade if you have it. Add any spare meat leftover from previous meals if desired. Starch it up with par-boiled potatoes, carrots, swedes, turnips or anything else of a stodgy nature, plus leeks, onions or other veg that need to be used. Use as much of the cooking water as you need to achieve the desired thickness. Add marmite or stock if that is to your taste. Use either pearl barley (not if gluten free!) or suitable pasta if desired. Dumplings can be good too. Allow to mull on the heat for an hour or so. Also cooks well over an open fire in case of a power cut. (70s child here!) Allow to stick to your ribs. Leftovers reheat happily. :D
  • I think the cheapest soup recipe I have is pea and mint
3 pints stock (made with cubes), 8 oz dried split green peas, 1 onion, handful of dried mint. Cook for a while :), blitz or mash and eat. Makes 3 pints of lovely thick tasty soup.

In other news I've found someone to grind the feet off my dutch oven (no sniggering Bob) - Im struggling to get it in and out of the fire these days and it will mean I can take it in and out on the coal shovel as it will have a flat bottom :)
  • Lentil soup is a favourite here

    6 oz split red lentils
    1 onion peeled and chopped
    1 stick of celery chopped
    1 carrot peeled and diced
1 large potato peeled and diced
    1 teaspoon of marmite/yeast extract
    1 teaspoon dried sage
    1 teaspoon dried thyme
    3 pints of vegetable/chicken/ham stock
    2 bay leaves
    salt and pepper to taste

Put everything except the marmite in a heavy based pan, bring it to the boil and then simmer it for 1 to 1 and a half hours until the lentils have broken down completely and the soup is thickened. Remove the bay leaves, add in the marmite and stir then season to your liking. You can add in some celery salt at the end of cooking time if you like it too. Makes 6 good servings and is lovely with crusty bread.

:D We should all aspire to flat bottoms, WCS.

OMG - huge crack of thunder outside. And it's only raining lightly. Didn't know that was forecast.

If I disappear all of a sudden, it'll be because the storm got worse and I decided to turn the PC off.

    Tally ho!
