Could be worse; not in York.

Guess where I work - and close to the river, too.

If we get a lot of rain, the roads between me and York turn into narrow causeways above the water, or else they just disappear under the water. A friend of mine has a Nordic walking pole in the car, with gaffer tape at the 9 inch mark (that's roughly just below her exhaust pipe). If she meets with water across the road, she sticks the pole in the water, and if it's over the gaffer tape, she doesn't go through. I keep meaning to adapt my broken mop to do something similar. (Hmmm. Goes off to find the old mop.)

:) Neat idea with the walking pole and gaffer tape. You could do the same with a garden cane.

York's a place I've visited many times, most recently last year, and walking up and down the riverside path from the city centre to the YHA hostel, looking at the size of that river and the "floodgates" on people's homes high on the bank has caused me to have a few OMG moments.

Dad told me something about how York gets the drainage from a lot of rivers. My city has a smallish but frisky river snaking thru it. River is much improved by works done in the last century but it has form. Environment Agency has my neighbourhood down as having Modern Risk of river flooding but if it happens, it's Severe.

Still dry here...........windy and warm, most peculiar.

I suppose everyone knows that you can register for flood alerts via the Enviroment Agency website? I'm down for automated warnings via landline, phone and email, as is SuperGran.

This is where we find out how well the scaffolding is bolted together...

  • Well after the powercut this morning we've had a productive afternoon foraging and are now in the process of bottling some foraged pears. Have never tried this before so quite excited but also a bit nervous after the stories of exploding jars

please be very careful if using power tools esp chainsaws as part of the clear-up. Post-disaster accidents are a well-known phenomenon.

I suspect that's mainly down to a lack of experience, with such equipment.

Because they're freely available to buy, people assume they're easy to use, and a skill you can "learn as you go".

As someone with over 10 years wood machining experience, I can assure you, the above assumption is completely incorrect.
  • I'll say this for where I live.

It might be terrible when it snows, but at least it can't flood.
  • Wind is picking up here a little, maybe I'll get to try out 'If SHTF' measures/supplies lol

Well, no S on the F here this morning, just a little damp wood where the log store door blew open! Don't know whether we've just been lucky or whether it was a bit of a damp squib.

  • Morning all, I think we were lucky, it could have been a whole lot worse but it wasn't. I'm glad I made the preps I did, if there had been substantial problems we were ready and placed well to cope with them. I hope everyone is OK this morning and that there has been no substantial damage to property and posessions, but more than that I hope everyone is unscathed and whole in body!!! The wind has slackened here and we have hazy blue skies and sunshine, He Who Knows and his boy are out for walkies and DD1 and her party got off on the train at 5.45 and are en route to St.Pancras for thier Eurostar to Paris. They've had a few delays (we've been tracking them online) but should make thier train. Have as easy a day as you all can, we're really down on sleep, it was very noisy wasn't it? so I'm planning a home day and a nap this afternoon to catch up. Take care if you have to be out and about particularly if the storm is still going where you live, look after yourselves and sleep well tonight eh? Love Lyn xxx.
