    Alibobsy...

buying and supporting local producers/shops etc is actually another good point to make on this thread, an example, a few months ago, when there was a bit of scaremongering going on about fuel, and a lot of garages sold out due to panic buying, our local garage put a sign up that they had sold out, BUT did have some left, that they were only selling to their regulars, I should imagine this if SHTF then this type of thing would kick in

I am now up our smallholding staying in our caravan for the night... Its bad now... so flip know how bad its going to be tomorrow night:eek::eek::eek:

Interesting thought. I know already that the butchers place does offers on bulk amounts as I said the 5lb chicken for £13.99, and they also do 5lb best steak mince for £12.99. But they don't have the offer on all the time and sometimes do one and not the other. However if I mention it, they always let me have the offer, and they nearly always add the stuff up and say "call it £x" always rounded down. Or they might throw a bit extra in like the eldest son had make some slightly wonky sausages so he threw 3 or 4 extra in.

Keep warm in your caravan, still jealous of anyone with a smallholding lol. That crofting programme looks good, going to watch with OH later, good to be self sufficent, but that kind of living is physically hard work.

  • Beaufort scale says Hurricane force 12 is winds of 74 miles per hour, so no change from what has been already forecast, bad enough but no worse, hope that helps, Lyn xxx.

I also use a local farm shop for veggies and cheese. Again locally produced and good quality in the main. I know the family who haved lived around here for years. One of the grandkids goes to school with my son.

They still have older customers they have had for years who ring in an order to pick up later lol.

They are very traditional and any regulars know how religeous they are and that they NEVER open on sundays as they are in church.

Christmas eve they are always heaving with people stocking up and some must only go that time of year. A couple of years back I went up on the Saturday when crimbo eve was the Sunday and was suprised to see it busy, but not heaving as usual. Chatting to the family they said they had had a busy morning and seen loads of regulars and locals, but not as many of the "extra" shoppers they usually get. They had decided some must have thought as it was a "special" day that they would be opening for crimbo eve but they were wrong.

I know it sounds like I live in the 50's or something lol, but we live semi rural on the edge of a small town and it is pretty traditional. A number of local businesses have happily survived despite the opening of a number of "big name brands". No starbucks etc on the high street here lol.

  • Have just looked up highest recorded windspeeds for the 1987 hurricane and highest speed was 119 knots per hour/136 miles per hour, so hopefully this will not be as devastating as it was then, hope that helps, Lyn xxx.

An essential item in the home medicine cabinet. It contains theobromine, which has been shown to be more effective in soothing coughs than any cough medicine.:D

Strange that. I was always taught to stay clear of chocolate when I have a cough as it makes it worse. Maybe the whittled down milk stuff ickles the throat and science is talking about decent cocoa chocolate. I will try a bar of the dark stuff next time I have a cough ;)

According to the daily Wail eating chocolate will stop your hair going;) grey!

Darn!! As someone who noticed a grey hair at 25 (thought my streaks were lasting well) I obviously wasn't eating enough chocolate.

Nah, I'm a chocolate fiend and have been steadily streaking too. Another example of utter tosh no doubt.

Well we're heading down south coast tomorrow and as my preps are holed up in a storage unit in the North East there is not a damn thing I can do about anything. We will be as prepared as the B&B we are staying in. I am not worried, what will be will be. There's nothing more I can do so the clothes we have packed and food/drink we have in the car is what we have. We should be there by 4pm tomorrow. I just hope we can get about to do our errands as we've only a few days down there.

Thank you Lyn for putting the storms into perspective. If our Scottish friends survived the appalling winds of last year I am sure the winds will pass through and we'll all manage.
  • I posted it on the 'Storm Coming' thread as well, it is better to know the actual facts than to scare yourself silly by having a guess isn't it? and I hoped the real figures for windspeed might not be quite so scary as the word hurricane, Cheers Lyn xxx.
