Provided they are sealed and kept in a dark place, about 6 months.
Keeping a bottle of plain (un-perfumed) bleach on hand, is a sensible precaution, in case you need to sterilise your drinking water.
Use 8 to 16 drops (about 1/4 teaspoon) per gallon/5 Litres, and double that if it's cloudy.
Shake (with the lid on of course) and let stand for 30 minutes before use.
If you don't have anything to chemically sterilise water, boil (a proper rolling boil) for 7 minutes at sea level, adding an extra minute for every 1,000 feet of altitude.0 -
Having lost the shed roof and part of the house roof in 1987, I have no fear of 80mph winds.
But it was traumatic because we had only been married for two weeks and DH had just gone back to work as an area manager with no mobile phone and on his way to Newbury. I was worried sick until he got home.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

we've had gusts of 80mph on several occasions since 1987 but nothing like that storm - although we did lose our roof in the high winds we had back in January 1998. Flat roof with zinc covering and a great sheet of it just lifted off and landed in the road. Fortunately no passers by or passing cars at the time.
One other prep for us - get fuel for the chain saw. We live in a very tree dense suburb and last time there were trees down you couldn't get a tree surgeon for love nor money. If the same thing happens again we can at least help our neighbours to clear trees in the road - and we'll get some logs out of it too.It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
WOW it was a rough night last night, and the storm is supposed to be tonight:eek::eek:
Was thinking of putting the chainsaw in the back of the van. as we have loads of trees on the entrance lane to the smallholding, and it would be s@ds law the chainsaw will be in the wrong house:rotfl:
does anyone know what time the storm is supposed to be starting to rumble in??Work to live= not live to work0 -
BTW we could have had half a pig as well for which they charge £4 a pound. BUT as pigs are so much heavier than lambs and we weren't sure how much spare cash we would have just before christmas so we left it. TBH they can always easily get rid of the pigs and sheep no problem.
The turkeys are looking happy and getting bigger. I was happy to have a smaller one, but the told OH as he is a helper he will be getting one of the bigger girls who will probably hit around 20 pound in weight.
Other than that I will go to our local butcher/farmshop for a few bits and we will be sorted for meat for a good while. The above mentioned farm shop let you put an order in for crimbo-usually to be picked up by a day or 2 before the big day. You can order around the start of November and pay a bit off each time you go in-you get a card. Or pay at once when you pick up. The meat is local high welfare and high quality-some their own produce.
Will probably get a nice beef joint for a day when we are sick of turkey as theirs are so good. Really dark lean beef and they can even tell you the cow it belonged to and when it was slaughtered. Really well hung, dark as anything mmmmmmmmm. Usually around £9-£12 for a fair sized joint and perhaps some packs of mince to stock up the freezer.
Plus their home cured and smoked bacon and their award winning sausages in various flavours.
Ooh we are so lucky living near them lol. Last time I went in and bought some of their lovely pork sausages they apologised as they had run out of fat when making so had to throw extra pork in!
What I want to know is how can they do locally produced, free range, brilliant quality, skinless chicken breast at 5lb for £13.99, or the same chicken whole around the size of a medium bird from the big boys, for about £6. But the supermarkets hammer the prices miles higher. Who said the supermarkets save you money.

Yesterday I got my torches ready and told Hubby he said "oh don't worry don't think there will be a power cut", this morning watching the news it said may cause power cuts in some areas hubby says" have we got any candles?"
I give up people there is no hope with that one.;) Wish to add him first on the list of "no hoper of prep"
I wanted to put a picture up that someone put on facebook. It says warning Gails all over Britain with a picture of a map of Britain with Gails face from corrie all over it. Made me smile.
Been up few hours as the kids woke up even earlier today. So much for extra hour in bed. Going to get a move on and do something with kids before I'll put them on ebay as a job lot!!!

Well with my chimney cowl already blown off I'm really looking forward to it all - not. One forecast said the north would get the worst of the rain and the south would get the worst of the wind. So I'll have all that water siling down my unprotected chimney
. And I won't be able to get a new one till the wind has settled. It's already wet and breezy. No change there then!
Doing a pork casserole in the slow cooker and will catch up on a few jobs needing power in case the leccy goes off.0 -
The rain has passed over and we now have sunshine and a stiff breeze. I'm taking 5 from preptastic chores with a cuppa then will head down to the chazzer which is open from 11 with a donation bag - need the floorspace.
Just to say to anyone else storing produce; I've been thru my HG spuds and a few had just started to shoot, and a few of the HG onions had started to rot, so have been picking thru and sorting them out.If anyone is a tad short of candles............I'm sorry, I've got the lot.
Vacuuming is done and I will be doing the machine sewing this aft (mending) and the ironing. Since the bad weather seems destined to hit my part of the forest on Monday morning, I have decided that I shall be up-and-dressed as opposed to just up well before normal start time in case it's all hands to the pump and I get called into work early.
Lovely peeps, can I just say that if you see the gullies (those drains in the side of roads in town) failing to cope in a downpour, it doesn't mean that they're blocked. It means that the water flow is too great for them to cope with at that particular time, and the water will subside. Calling your council won't cause them to come out to Do Something as it's a temporary overwhelm not a blockage.
A word to the wise (and I'm sure anyone reading on MSE is The Wise by definition) please be very careful if using power tools esp chainsaws as part of the clear-up. Post-disaster accidents are a well-known phenomenon. I used to share a house with an A & E nurse and the two things he told me he'd never allow in his household were chip pans and chainsaws, based on what he'd seen thru his work.
pineapple, look on the bright side; at least you won't have to worry about the cowl blowing off tonight, seeing as it's already gone.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Today I have taken up knitting. I have been meaning to do it for ages but never quite got round to it. I can do a basic stitch but couldn't cast on myself *such shame*. I am pleased to announce I have now learnt to cast on and done a couple of lines hehe.Spam Reporter Extraordinaire
