Nuatha, what lovely photos, may I add my voice to the others and wish both of you oodles of joy!
Anyone else listen to 'Shared Planet' on Radio 4 this morning, presented by Monty Don? It was about increasing population, decreasing resources, imminent extinction of various animal species, etc. Very, very interesting, if depressing. Good interview with Paul Ehrlich, very grim, balanced (cos it's the Beeb!) with one from an OU chap - Joe someone? Anyway, recommended listening; possibly a good basis for some further thoughts and interwebulating (credit GQ for a lovely word)....
    :) Afternoon, fellow preppers.

Y'know, life is strange. A few weeks ago I fetched a book from the library. I should explain that I read a mixture of fiction and non-fiction, follow various fave authors, experiment with authors recommended by pals in RL and online, but I also like to randomly forage the stacks and tables and see what falls into my hands, as it were.

Sooo, what fell into my hands was Unnatural Selection; choosing boys over girls, and the consequences of a world full of men by Mara Hvistendahl. ISBN 987 1 58648 850 5.

And there is Paul Ehrlich, among others.

To say that this book is shattering is an understatement. Unputdownable. It will change what you think you know about overpopulation and about the behaviour of US foundations and other organsations in policies enacted as recently as the 1970s and 1980s inc forced sterilisations and abortions of nearly full term pregancies. And how rightwing politicians in the US in the first Bush were pushing the most severe policies in the East whilst coming over all pro-life in the USA.

    Gobsmacking.

The natural gender bias of our species is 105 males to 100 females at birth. To reflect the greater vulnerability of boys and men to certain diseases and certain risk-taking behaviours. 106 and above is unknown in nature. There are some parts of some countries where the ratio is far higher, anything up to 160:100 in some places. 180 million missing female persons - appalling. And can you imagine what will happen in those countries with so many excess males when they come of age to marry (or otherwise set up with the opposite sex)?

Tell ya, you won't feel the same about certain names after reading this very detailed history of what's been happening for the last several decades. Erhlich doesn't come out of it particularly well, either.

Well, am about to do something creative with leftovers which themselves started life as YS bargains. I get a putty medal for that, I should think.

I did consider it may well have been the fire exit that was locked. Will be making a complaint. TBH the entire street was difficult to navigate as there were A frame adverts and barriers outside the clubs - it was in the gay village so I am about to compose a letter to the council. Most of Manchester city centre is accessible but this is our first trip to the village with the wheelchair and I was very unimpressed. the roadway is cobbled which is quaint but a total no no for us. Its a shame as we used to love going to the village for a wander and a drink.

    :( Interesting.

I have friends who have degrees in environmental science. They are doom merchants, insisting that every organism, from the lowliest single cell creature to homo sapiens, reproduces until it reaches the physical limits of its environment and food supply.

Then is culled by disease and starvation. I shudder to think of that happening en masse to my fellow humans but this is a finite planet, and I fear that it might well happen. I sincerely hope not.

    Pantries... mmmmm.

I dream about having one. Jars of glistening jams, jellies, chutney, pickles, cordials, syrups, ketchups, licquers (Sp?) and alcohol... I imagine it's like grabbing a bit of summer, the sight, smell, tastes, summer jewels, getting you through the winter... Sigh...

I've even looked at sites showing pictures of pantries (a bit like pantry !!!!!!).

Would love one, but, just isn't the room here.

OH made me a little one under the stairs :)

    Unfortunately I can's seem to add a photo :o

    Pantry !!!!!! :rotfl::rotfl:

:D I suspect that only on Old Style or perhaps Merfa Stooart Livin would that make perfect sense.

I do love a good panty and wish I had one. My kitchen would make and excellent pantry (6 x 6 feet). Just need a proper size kitchen to attach it to.......hmm, could I tunnel thru the party wall and take over the flat next door.......

chip chip chip - ominous cracking noise - sifting dust - rumble as of distant thunder in the mountains - CRASH.

Well how was I supposed to know it was a loadbearing wall?!

Daz378, I envy you that community garden! We were agitating for a community orchard here; there's plenty of land lying around we could have used productively. So they allocated space for one on the latest Local Plan - about a mile from our (very small) town centre, up a steep hill, miles from the bus route & with no possible parking! What's the betting it would never have been visited, never mind used? The idea was to produce fruit for people who didn't have room for trees, or health & fitness enough to do their own gardens or allotments full time... Looks like your HA are a bit more switched-on!
