Sooo, what fell into my hands was Unnatural Selection; choosing boys over girls, and the consequences of a world full of men by Mara Hvistendahl. ISBN 987 1 58648 850 5.
There are some parts of some countries where the ratio is far higher, anything up to 160:100 in some places. 180 million missing female persons - appalling. And can you imagine what will happen in those countries with so many excess males when they come of age to marry (or otherwise set up with the opposite sex)?
GreyQueen
Two stories come to mind when reading the first part and two the second part.
The Polar Inuit (North-west Greenland completely isolated from both "Canadian" and southern Greenland populations until late 19C) were extremely vulnerable to starvation when there was an unexpected change in their environment/food supplies and had no capacity to increase the output of their environment.
They communally ran a very tight ship maintaining a strict upper limit on their population because they knew from experience that if numbers rose above a certain limit everyone could starve. The controls included a very strict control on the number of female children; with a preference of all families to have one daughter but not to have more unless there was a daughter deficit in another closely related family. Limiting the number of fertile women allowed them to limit the whole population.
Excess fit boys were considered OK as hunters were liable to early death and some replacements were useful but families were required to limit total numbers.
Traditional Tibetan society was polyandrous for a very similar reason - limiting the number of child-bearing women controlled the total population. They re-directed their excess females into the nunneries.
In a completely different context, you may have heard me blowing up about the control or lack of control of bambi, particularly in hunting areas. In order to limit the total population you HAVE to limit the number of hinds (females). The trouble is that estates want lots of stags which the punters want to hunt (so the more females to bear stags the better) but there is no market for hunting hinds, so it has to be done by estate staff at the expense of the owners. And when the population grows every spring sees loads of animals dying of starvation and in the mean-time they wreck the whole environment.
In conclusion, by favouring the male children, these countries will massively reduce their total population in the next generation.
According to articles I have read the kidnapping and sale of young women as wives is already widespread in parts of both India (Rajhistan in particular) and China and there is a trade in trafficked wives from adjacent countries into China. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
OH made me a little one under the stairs
Unfortunately I can's seem to add a photo

I suspect that only on Old Style or perhaps Merfa Stooart Livin would that make perfect sense.
I do love a good panty and wish I had one. My kitchen would make and excellent pantry (6 x 6 feet). Just need a proper size kitchen to attach it to.......hmm, could I tunnel thru the party wall and take over the flat next door.......
chip chip chip - ominous cracking noise - sifting dust - rumble as of distant thunder in the mountains - CRASH.
Well how was I supposed to know it was a loadbearing wall?!
Hello GQ
Hmmmm.... Now, you are giving me ideas. Our kitchen is pretty small, though not that small, 81/2' X 91/2'. Maybe I could start digging out a cellar?

Hello all, just a quick update to say that we arrived safely in Thailand and are settling in. We have a lovely little flat at the university. The university is absolutely fabulous and I can hardly believe the facilities it offers.
The people are very friendly and polite and always seem to be smiling and happy with their lot in life. I am very glad we left Greece when we did. Reading between the lines it looks like things are starting to come to a head. My thoughts are with all my friends who cannot leave Greece.
Hope you are all well and still prepping.“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. When in a state of security he does not forget the possibility of ruin.” Confucius (551 BC - 479 BC):A0 -
Hi 2T great news, so glad you are settling in and enjoying the life at the university. We're also very glad you left Greece when you did, it was a difficult decision for you both to make but will hopefully give you a much better life and future. It is sad when friends have to be left behind under difficult circumstances but sometimes all you CAN do is to sort out your own lives and live them well. I hope you find Thailand very soon becomes 'home' for you both and that you find a lovely set of friends to enjoy life with, stay in touch when you can, it really is nice to hear from you, Cheers Lyn xxx.0

RAS - very interesting post there. I'd never really thought about the ramifications of gender selection, but it does worry me how they find out what gender the children would be etc., etc.......:(2025 Fashion on the ration

I've always loved the idea of one of these - although not the price - with the trapdoor hidden under a rug.

GQ can't you afford panties?
We'll set up a panty fund. Can't have you 'going commando'! :rotfl:Goshdarnit, woman, I've just snorted liquid up my nose! LMAO.
Serves me right for typing at speed when weary. But if you're buying, I'll have some more Sl0ggi, pls. Have you seen the price of those things lately? Going commando isn't really my thang (or even my thong) but the price of pants is getting silly.
RAS, yes, countries/ regions/ districts with lower numbers of women will have lower populations. But what's happening is that the places which have destroyed so many of their girls and thus women aren't usually the ones which suffer if they have sufficient economic muscle to buy in brides from even poorer regions, such as the Taiwanese with their bought wives from the Mekong Delta. And the destabilising effect on the men who are growing up into a womanless wasteland where their female peers have been lured abroad by men from richer nations.......
If you look at life from an ecomomic POV only, you'd think scarce women = greater value = better treatment. Isn't happening thus far, and there are a lot worse things than bride-buying going on inc the kidnapping for prostitution overseas of very young girls and women. Ugh. Eleven year olds in brothels being raped dozens of times a day.*shudders*

I was in New Zealand twice and chatted in various places with Maori men. Their traditonal culture is fascinating and was very aggressive in tribal times. Ask what the intertribal wars were about and they say, quick as a flash, Women and Land. And look at you as if you were a fool for even thinking it might ever have been anything else. Because without those, you don't have a tribe and descendants, and that's what ultimately matters.

Been gradually rotating out water supplies, opening bottled water past its BB date, using it in the kettle for tea, refilling bottle from tap, adding a label with a new BB date around its nexk (going for 3 monthly intervals) and re-stashing in the darksome sorners of the kitchen.
I keep water in several places, partly because of necessity(insufficent space to keep it all in one area) and partly because of a total SHTF disaster when the primary stash was compromised in some sort of wild looter situation.
Been watching things hiding under rocks in some areas of the world of finance via some of the tinfoily websites and am very concerned about the gibbering incompetance of the financial class. I expect they have their parachutes all ready to go and will gladly hang the rest of us out to dry.
Buy tins. You know it makes sense.
2tonsils, glad that you have arrived safely in Thailand and your campus appartment is pleasant. Wishing you and your OH all the best for your fresh start and hope that things don't get too much worse for those poor souls in Greece.
Right, better check some other threads and touch base with the OS homies. Laters, GQ xxEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
