Thanks Possession, Kidcat and Smiley. That's good to know. Thinking about it I used to pay upfront for my pooch's walks, I'd forgotten that. xxx

One local town has 8 well known stores all near each other so if you lived there you don't have to travel out of town for your shopping and they have other shops I have not mentioned and yet to me I don't see it as a major town.

B A (West A, St H A) I don't know what the heck it's called. Is that where you mean? If so, they're getting a Marks and Spencer, Pets at Home, Brantano, Next and JD Sports. The main town is losing it's McDonalds and Marks and Spencer because of the out of town development a few miles down the road. When I lived that way on, town nearby beginning with C 3 years ago, B A was not at all busy. I can't understand where the demand will come from to warrant all this. Like I said last week, Sainbury's was not even bustling in the slightest last Friday night - should be peak time!

That's the one Fuddle, It's difficult because the main area of shopping belong to BA but they are all going towards West A or Tindale and unless they improve the bus service for the new area, they are assuming everyone has their own car(many do I know)but when I had to use a bus the other week I had to walk quite a way and could not make a regular trek there and that was only to Aldi. Worse if I had to go to Lidl's.

Darlington was the place to go around here but that looks very tired to me when I do make the effort.

There's still only such money and it's not being spent as it was even if you forget about those of us on here.

To think Mum was a BA girl and Dad from Shildon and they moved this way because this is where everyone was and everything was happening now we seem to be going full circle, my town seems quite dead too.

Perhaps the promise of it building new train coaches and creating work may reverse it's fortunes.

  • Morning

It's my baby boys 16th birthday today so we will be have a family shin dig after school.

If they have a party it comes out of their set budget for birthday but if they have a tea party at home with family and close friends they don't. They always choose the tea party :rotfl: mercenary lot in this house I'll telly ya !!!

This year he wants cash so he can have a bank card :( thinking long and hard about this, hopefully he learnt his lesson earlier in the year when he lent money off me and it took him months to pay back with me taking half of what he earned to go off his debt, he only borrowed 30 quid :rotfl: but he said he dosn't like lending money any more so hopefully it did the trick.

I only panic as his dad got me in so much debt when we were together and my boy is much like his father in so many ways.

Must get on and have a lovely day you lovely people

My big boy has a bank card - I started a junior saver account for him when he was younger, & at 16 (last year) it rolled into something he could access. I was very nervous, for the same reasons as you, but decided he needs to have the experience... With a debit card, yes, he can squander his money, but can't get into debt, & it's helping DS1 realise the money has to go into his account to come out again.

& we've done lots of talking about debt & sensible money management.

Hope he has a great birthday!
  • Byatt, I have the same problem with campers. First of all getting a deposit and then because I ask them to pay on arrival.

I say that whilst I'm sure that this would not apply to them, I have had so many campers just not turn up (true) or leave in the night ( also true) that we now have a"policy".

Could you say similar - "I have turned down other cats and then not been required at the last minute, have had to wait months to be paid, so we ( use we it seems to work better when you are on your own ) now have a policy. However nice they are just get used to saying it.

As for T's and C's find the web site of your biggest competitor and see what they say.

I can see your problem with getting your money - people do hate parting with their cash although they are quite happy to pay a fortune for a fancy holiday.

When my cats went to the cattery I was always expected to pay when I picked them up (they didn't ask for a deposit or anything). I have had a cat sitter a couple of times, but she is a niece so things are a bit different. I left food in the fridge, and cash for her to buy more food (she eats different things than me!) and always paid her as soon as I got home.

I guess expectations may be different depending on where you are. Rural folk often tend not to expect to cough up quickly, wrong though that is.

Re bikes/scooters and the like - I've been on and around motorbikes since I was 15, husband still has one and my elder son had one since he was 16. But the roads are far too busy now and car drivers are often careless - when a biker gets hit the car driver always says "oh I'm sorry I didn't see you". Because they look for cars, their eyes are expecting to see cars and a bike sometimes doesn't register. The roads around here are popular with bikers, they love the emptyness and windey roads - but every single nice sunny weekend a biker is hurt. I don't think I would push any of mine to get a bike now.
Last week my son went up north to Aviemore with 3 mates. Coming home he noticed that the guy behind him, the last bike, was not there. He turned back and cars passing him were flashing lights - he says he felt sick when he saw that. His mate was lying unconscious under the bike & a car had stopped. The mad thing is, he came round in a few minutes, declined all help, and got back on the damaged bike and they all escorted him home at 40 mph - took them until well after midnight. Guy went home, fed his cat, went to bed. next morning could hardly get out of bed and dragged himself to the docs - 6 BROKEN RIBS lol!
We gave the son a talking to - to always always check/change the guy who is last in the group, at the back, because if he has a slower bike or isn't as confident on the corners then he's going to try too hard to keep up and that's when you come off. So far my son's been lucky, he's had bikes since was 16 and he's now 41 - but everytime he and the RV go out, I worry.
