I had no idea there was so much choice of wind up radio's and that many have a torch built in, even can be charged by using the sun...Amazon seem to have quite a range...Most are AM/FM and there is talk that they'll eventually switch to DAB radio. But if it's years away an AM/FM receiver would be fine...and last quite a long time.
You can get wind up DAB radio's too...
If you get a wind up radio / torch, find one with good reviews or prepare to be disappointed. I bought one with a small dial for tuning, so small that was impossible to tune in to anything clearly. Torch bit was OK.
Nothing daunted, I bought a second one with a slider tuner. That tuned in nicely, but to get ten minutes worth of radio I had to wind for three minutes... This was not quite what I'd envisaged.
Much better was my original wind-up radio which was BIG but a minute's worth of winding got you half an hour of radio, albeit with a constant muffled whirr from the radio's innards.

All this talk of cod liver oil reminded me of when my sister was born. She is 9 years younger than me so I remember it well. She had cod liver oil and a bottle of thick orange stuff from the baby clinic.that was in the mid sixties0

Mmmm... that orange juice was lovely, and so was the rosehip syrupThink big thoughts but relish small pleasures0

As a child I was given a cod liver oil capsule daily at school with all the other children along with a spoonful of malt extract daily and a third of a pint of milk,I think being at school in the late 1940s-50 every child seem to be given them. Now I am a bit more aged and my joints have seized up with this damp weather, (plus osteo -arthritis)I think I would probably be better off having a slug of WD40 to get me more mobile

Jackie!
I think Mum said they had a daily dose of Castor Oil when they were children. I have forgotten some of the tales she told me and should have asked more. I remember when people had Cod Liver Oil in liquid form, it was often given with orange juice or milk.
Which I see has been verified whilst I wrote my post...there's lots of things come back about childhood but I can never quite remember how long we did things for(a bit like that thread that discussed what we ate in the 1950's and 60's and the stories about Sunday Tea...
For a time Mum used to drink PLJ lemon on a morning diluted in hot water(I think)and I remember having a Halliborange tablet daily. Also remember Rosehip syrup but I don't remember again how often we had it or when we stopped having it."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. I can use batteries in my radio's and if the electric doesn't go off I'm ok I suppose but I may consider getting one.
That torch I bought was already charged up, I tried it a few minutes ago, It has two settings low and very bright or a third where it flashes on and off. It seems a good buy...
PAH will tell you(and we have been discussing them on the stock room thread)wind up lanterns and I found link to a good site for items that may be needed in an emergency."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Fuddle - you're a star! OH and I have both spent the last half hour perusing the open learn stuff, neither of us had found it despite the fact we are both doing degrees with the OU. I've bookmarked 3 courses complementary to my childhood and youth studies degree and OH has bookmarked 2 that are short extracts from his next course due to start in October so he can get a bit of a jump on it. I was wondering what to do with myself now I was down to only one course - I've been feeling a bit like I'm not doing enough!!!! with only the one on the go as I had got so used to doing 2 over the last few months.
Looks like we finally got DS to bed - poor little sausage is teething and it looks like he's got the same silly teeth as OH - front ones as normal but from eye teeth round OH only got one set that came through in between sized with small roots!!! He's getting his first pre molar at the moment and it's massive.:eek::eek:
DD had her new physio for her hydro session today and he was brilliant with her - finally one that I feel some confidence in. He was doing proper exercises with her and he was talking to as a proper intelligent little person - I've had problems with previous ones making assumptions about her intellectual capacity as her physical difficulties and language clarity (or rather lack there of) mean that some people assume that she also has intellectual disabilities too.
Feeling much brighter today than I have for a while - DS slept last night for the fist time in about a week, and it's amazing what a good night's sleep and some positive progress re DD can do for a body!0 -
I've been MIA for quite a while (for various reasons). It's good to be back, especially as I've found this nice new thread, and have already seen some familiar "faces".
May be only lurking for a while though. Will do more when I get my energy back!Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!0 -
I actually like cod liver oil with orange juice although I know most people prefer the capsules, but I cannot swallow them so every so often I buy some of the liquid - but it is so dear against the capsules sadly and its so fiddly to put a hole in and squeeze out the oil.
I am hoping later today to order the dyhydrators - the ones grandma47 and someone else has, wish I could afford the excalibur but considering this time of year only when its really going to be used for potatoes I just cannot make myself short just now to buy one, although may save up, but whenever I do that I always end up having to use the money for something else, usually son is involved some way.
Phoned son earlier to see if cheque had cleared and he told me it had done so on Tuesday and he had 'forgotten' he owes me £220 plus he has his car payment due - he could not get finance so he talked hubby into getting it which did not please me one bit. Up till last month sons partner was in charge of finances so she made sure she transferred the money into our account in time for the payment on the 15th but now they have seperated son is in charge of doing so. I prefer it going via our bank account as that way I can check if its being paid so hubby doesn't suddenly get a letter saying he has missed his payment. I have got us totally clear and do not want any debts in our name thanks to son and one day we might need to buy another car as our dear pippa is 7 years old now and although doing well will not last for ever, of course if I lose my DLA we will not even be able to run her ( we have paid for her so at least no worries there) as I just can never find insurance under £500 for hubby no matter how I search as hubby has a good no claims bonus and no points on his license . I don't know if its that we rent our home or he drives for a living its got to be one of those that makes it so much higher and I cannot jiggle his job description, its delivery driver for a local newspaper there is no other way I can put it so cannot take up Martins suggestion.
Well I had my bath and laid there with a £320 face mask on my face for the prescribed 10 mins - I put on only a very, very thin layer. Now I don't have wrinkles or saggy skin ( do have a double chin does that count, but then I have a double chin when I weight 8st, just one of the many weird things about me) but must admit even after just that one time my skin does feel firmer. It said apply to a clean face so there was me washing it with aqueous cream:rotfl::rotfl: before applying it - it cost me £2.30 for a big pot, so same figures but in a different order, I then rubbed in a tiny bit of the £103 moisturising cream.
I am going to try and keep a note of each time I use any of them so can see how many uses I get from each pot.
Right for 5 mins I had some money - hubby got paid but now everything I pay by SO like rent and water rates all paid for the month and money for DD ( including money for sons car but he will be told I could not pay all the rent as laid out his car money - lie I know but if I don't he will say well what do you need the money for you have food in and not rush to pay us back ) transferred to bill a/c to come out on Monday only gas, electric and food etc., don't come out of his money......sigh was nice to feel I had some dosh for a few minutes. Just enough left to put petrol in the car until I get money back from son.
This is why I feel I must have stocks in as if anything happened with my money we would not have a penny to buy food with while DWP decided whether we should receive benefits as we got sent as our HA sent us all out letters last week saying if we have to claim HB we must continue to pay rent in full until the benefits are through then they will repay any overpaid rent, that should cause some fun with people who are suddenly unemployed and no wages as happened to staff in local shop yesterday - they arrived at work to find place closed and notice to say no money to pay anyone so shop had to close.
Friend called and told me and asked if I would be willing to give money or food to the staff- as most live on the housing estate not far from me and so some people are organising food and money baskets to help everyone till they can get benefits. They are asking people to take in bills ( using a local shop ) that must be paid this week and what can be paid will be. Most people so far have given money. So will dig into my stocks and give a fair bit - can give more that way, as there are many people with young children who lived almost hand to mouth as it was.
Its great people are doing this but as these things continue people will just not be able to do it as they will not have any spare money or food.
Right it is now nearly 2am I have been writing this over past 3 hrs or so........
Going to go to sleep I hope

I'm very tempted to try the WD40 on my knackered out ankle, especially after having yet another consultant moan at me for being too young to be in this situation, and confirm that there is no miracle, just a fusion operation as far away as I can bear
When I can get into the garage and find the darned stuff, I'll report back!
