What an interesting article for all the reasons you mention. I've never eaten that much in a week even when there was Mum and Dad as well as me. Even less now as one on both cost wise and eating smaller portions...The brutal comparison comes as you get to the end of the article and see how little some live on and how probably more healthy the diet is as it has more grains and fruit included.

Thank you for the IBS help everyone. I'm to keep a food diary and go back next Tuesday. Hopefully there will be something on there that screams at him. I'm not going to add anything or change anything till then but I will call into the library tomorrow morning and try to read up on it.
I am avoiding the internet like the plaque because I just know I'll find myself thinking I have something that I most probably will not have.
I'm supposed to be making broth on Saturday, I don't know whether pearl barley and the like will be a good or bad thing.
The leaves on my willow are losing their colour. It's breezy and cold. Going to get the rice bags in the microwave and have a hot chocolate. I feel the sadness waving over me today. Not good and to top it off I'm looking after my niece tomorrow. She's being dropped off at 7am and I have the school run to do with a very headstrong 3 year old. She doesn't like Alfie so he is going to have to spend the day alone in the garden or on my bed watching the world go by, poor lad. I am helping my sister out who is in the later stages of pregnancy and needs some 'me time'. You know what though, I really don't want to.
I plan to make ginger bread men but I know she'll turn her nose at my version with currents for eyes as she's used to decorating them with smarties and icing. Not in my house Josephine, not in my house.
Oh ignore me. What a grump.0 -
Poor man was so tired out sitting in his chair for that amount of time, they never even offered us a cup of tea.............
I can relate to that and sounds like what mum had to go through during her final year...Thinking of you and your OH...sending hugs xOh Shegar, sorry to say this seems to be par for the course with NHS in a lot of places
Fuddle - Doctors often use IBS as a catch-all for a number of different problems, so it does depend how you are being affected as to what you need to do to help. MiL was seeing a consultant for years with her IBS - sadly they never did find anything to help it. Not to say this will be the case with you. Don't blame yourself, much more likely this is something that would have happened whatever. Hope it improves soon.
Wishing you well Fuddle...It may turn out something simple and easily controlled, lets hope so. I doubt you've caused it and some conditions do just happen. i didn't expect what happened to me and I thought I was reasonably fit and healthy. At least it is being dealt with now...
As Mrs Chip says sometimes initially doctors use a general term, they did with me...and no doubt do with many that they see.
It may turn out that you will hardly have to change your diet and from the little I know if you have to cut back on fibre...you can do that I am sure...I am avoiding the internet like the plaque because I just know I'll find myself thinking I have something that I most probably will not have.
In one way good to be informed, in another way probably a sensible idea to leave it for now seeing that you are going back so soon..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Thanks for that very interesting link to the families and their shopping for the week. It's interesting to find that ours comes nearer to the Egyptian family than any other. We spend about 65 euros a week on just food and the other 20 goes on toiletries, cleaning supplies and odds and sods for the house. Toiletries and cleaning stuff are very expensive here compared to the UK so I have started making my own after reading the OS threads on here. Not only is it a lot cheaper they work a lot better than the stuff I have been spending a fortune on all these years...
Because of my celiac disease I tend to do all our cooking from scratch with fresh ingredients so I don't accidentally get glutened by something hidden in a tasty packet! It's easier now they have changed the labelling law in Europe but unfortunately they sneak gluten in under different names. I feel safer not having any of them. I make my own gluten free bread as you can't buy any decent GF bread here. The shop stuff is 6.50 a loaf, it only keeps for one day and you have to order it at the chemist. It was so heavy that I thought about buying it instead of building bricks!
I buy mostly local chicken and meat, frozen fish as its cheaper and lots of local fruit and veg, whatever is in season. I buy olive oil cheaply from an old couple in their eighties (and still working in the fields) at just 3 euros a litre. I often have bottles of wine given to us and since I am a non drinker I save them in the house until my hubby or guests want a tipple. I don't drink soft drinks or juice as they set off my celiac response so its usually tea/herbal tea/coffee or spring water for us.
My mother was diagnosed with IBS but I think now that she probably had celiac disease and it was never diagnosed properly. The endocrinologist here insisted I had inherited it and that it was made worse by the food poisoning I had about five years ago. It took them four years to diagnose it...they had blamed everything from my age to my hormones before that...... I paid 40 euros to see the specialist privately and have never looked back. after a brief panic thinking there was nothing I could eat I have discovered that I feel much better on the eating plan I have devised.
Very windy here tonight and threatening us with thunderstorms. That might not be a bad thing as its tinder dry and there is a big forest fire just down the road from us. The fire planes have to stop flying at dusk and we are almost there now so its a scary thought it might be burning all night. If there is a chance its getting too close to our village they will ring the church bells none stop to warn us all to get out. Glad I am a prepper now.....my panic button is not easily pressed!!!!!“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. Has everyone seen mysupermarket's savvy buys thing? It's brilliant! Shows what the prices have been over the last year so you can see when things are really a bargain, not just what the supermarket says is a bargain. 2TONSILS - stay safe!!!
FUDDLE - Good kid, get your information from a sensible place and don't change anything in your diet or your symptoms won't be the same and the food diary won't give the GP an accurate picture. I know it can make you sensitive to some foods if you have had a tummy upset, you loose enzymes that aid digestion and sometimes become intolerant until your gut heals and the enzymes build up again. We have had that situation with dairy foods, both girls have had allergies to them in the past and if they pick up a bug, they always have to leave them out of their diet for a couple of months, and then re-introduce them gradually. You'll be able to deal with it, whatever it is Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -
Quick update on the fire near to us...someone lit it deliberately in the high winds in four different places on the same mountainside. Honestly, they want stringing up for putting people in danger! Last year it was someone who was disgruntled on being turned down for the fire service!
It's on the next valley to ours so about four km away, but the wind is really gusting so it can spread quickly. Reading the updates on the local forum in between posting on here, they are thinking of evacuating people from the villages nearest to it in the direction the wind is gusting. Might put the local tv station on instead of sky news so I can watch what is going on live. It's just starting to rain..“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. Now we have gales in the North of the island (its only 40 km long and 20 wide lol) and there are reports of some damage...just been outside and its raining lightly and we saw two flashes of lightning in a couple of minutes. Its still very warm though even at five to eight!
Decided to do the sensible thing and go out for the evening (in the car I might add) ..so off to watch the Elvis impersonator if he is not cancelled due to the strange weather...then if he is we are off to see a group who sing songs we like and play magical guitars!!! They are fantastic and if I have to sit through a storm I would rather do it with a soda water and lemon in my hand than sitting in the house waiting for the electric to go off. Speaking of which I am off to put my lippy on before I can't see my lips LOL...have to unplug everything now as I can hear bolts of thunder a couple of miles away and there is no earth on the electrics here. Have a good evening new friends of minexxxxxx“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come.
