FUDDLE - You are right, Rose Hip Syrup is very rich in vitamin C and very good for you in the winter. You have to be a little careful with rosehips as the seeds inside have tiny hairs on them which are irritant (kids used them as itching powder years ago) and shouldn't be consumed. To make sure the juice from the hips is safe use an old pillowcase as a jelly bag and pour the cooked hips and water from cooking into it and let it drip overnight, don't be tempted to squeeze the bag for the last bit of juice. You should end up with a beautiful clear bowlful of rose hip juice, then add your sugar and there you go, boil it up and rose hip syrup.. Glad the book is proving useful. The syrup is best kept in the fridge, it will not ferment then and if you save some small plastic bottles (water bottles etc) you can freeze the syrup and it will keep all the winter. Just keep it in the fridge when you defrost it. If you would like a really sinful, yummy idea try it on vanilla ice cream Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!
Had a thought about wracks for the DIY stove, do you have a recycling centre anywhere in reach? If you do the sturdiest thing you can get is an old oven shelf, and the recyclers would probably be able to let you have a couple easily.
Haven't watched the Wartime Farm yet as we went to a quiz last night, am looking forward to watching this evening, I did a Victorian Cleaning Day at a local museum and Ruth Goodman was the instructor. She is much nicer face to face than she comes across on film. She had a wicked sense of humour and the most infectious chuckle it was a fun day. Hope all well with you and yours and that your blackberry outing with Alfie was productive Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -
BINGO Rose Hips they are, and very nice ones by the looks of it, well found, Lyn xxx.0

Rose hip wine is my utter favourite but I've not found any yet round here that I can get to.
Watch out for earwigs in them, they always seem to have them in when I pick them."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -

I don't iron either *shudder* only for the B&B. Mx ex MIL used to iron socks, underpants (70's nylon ones :rotfl:) tea towels, dishcloths - everything. She needed to get out more!
Also did the double takes at !!!!!! - LOL!!!
Took a day 'off' today and went charity shop trawling. Totally stocked for the pop up tea room, and have come home with a STUNNING suggestion from one of the people I bought from, to offer to do it as birthday parties! :j I Looked at her and said "OMG - I LOVE you that is JUST BRILLIANT!!!" (They had an ancient jack russell staggering around the shop with one eye...she said it was 22!!!)
Got a great haul of bits and pieces today, a red wool blazer for £3.50, A nice but rather large German cotton dress that is JUST like one of those 1940's house coats - brilliant for baking in. A nice painted floral piggy money box for 50p. A unicorn plate which might make a nice pressie for DD if I can bear to part with it...a big blue teapot for £1, a bag of bits of vintage lace that on closer inspection contains two handmade collars along with some other bits including a pair of victorian gloves (£2 for the bag) Got a very nice string of vintage pearls, three rows in shades of pink for £3 and a stunning 196o's pleated organza hat (in shocking pink) for dressing up :P I might wear that a couple of times then e-bay it!
Such a downer to come home now, and DS and DD's BF are sitting playing games - beautiful sunny day - and I've got to make dinner, process washing, take the dogs out and generally start where I left off... I'm really *bored* with being someone's mummy - especially now those people are old enough to manage without a mummy!!!

Thought you were talking about something else then with the !!!!!!!
SOrry, my language is like a navvy at times.
I have spoken with TPTB, they have space and she is going for a trial on Monday. THen it's decision time.....
I really must start the tidying.
ANother coffee? NO - I'll bribe myself to do an hours work before it.
Im like you the only thing that came to mind was !!!!!!..!!, My language is like the navy all the time.....:eek:0 -
Ooh I loved scrubbing the step for my mum, so satisfying. Reminds me of a welsh friend, her mum was poor and everyone had a joint on sunday but she couldn`t afford one but still made sure the neighbours saw her sharpening her carving knife on the step.
Windows, I just had a flashback. I used to clean the windows as a child, sash windows in a terraced house, sitting on the cill legs on the outside and window drawn down to reach on the inside and then the reverse for the outside. No elf and safety then. Also grew up playing on bomb sites
My mum used to have the front and back steps in those horrible red cardinal tiles, do you remember those.?, she use to put the cardinal polish on them wait til it dried then polished it,:eek:, god things were a dam sight harder back in the 40 s 50s and 60s.........
And to top it all she use to have loads of copper and brass and spend all day cleaning that too......Besides look after 5 family members, cook, clean wash ,irion on the same day, plus do all the gardening jobs, phew me talk about hard work in "those" days dont cover it...........0 -
He he, do you remember those brick sized bars of dark green Fairy household soap? I found one of those in the depths of Mum's cupboard about 20 years ago, unused and still in it's carton. She couldn't believe it when I successfully sold it first time of offering at a car boot sale for £2.
And I can recall that Cardinal polish too. Wouldn't want to go back to those days, though. Even if I have a fondness for 1950s kitchenalia..............Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

lovely free shrug knitting patterns
anyone ever make itching powder from the hairy bits inside rose hips?
oh heck mardatha, that`s a hard road for you. I`m sure you have the food lists so good luck in getting him sorted
I looked through the hairy bikers diet book, looks very good and full of recipes but am waiting for a much cheaper price. I made courgette spirals yesterday, just like spaghetti and steamed for a couple of minutes. Was very good and a good pasta substitute and am pleased to see that the GI is very low. So have tried to store them in green bags and will have them like this a few times more before winter
