After all the help with the wood I thought was fir, it's not, the leaf I spotted is reddish...0

I've had my first payslip. I've been taxed. I thought wages under a certain amount aren't taxed? I don't hit £2000 per year.
What tax code does it show you on? Did you give a P45 or fill in a P46 before you started? You might still be on emergency tax if they haven't done the forms yet.0 -
Thank you for your help Byatt and tiny.
The tax code is 0TM1. I haven't worked for 3 years and not filled any p46 or p45 info in. Yes Byatt. It's the council. I'll email them. Ta.
I guess it will be sorted it was just a bit of a shock.0 -
And they keep saying how many have been taken out of the tax equation:mad:Have you also been enrolled in the automatic pension scheme they brought in as well? If so that means you are being taxed, have a certain amount removed for the pension scheme and should you pay union fees(that is a good idea)that takes off quite an amount weekly...:(
I reckon that you are only earning approx £35 per week if that and with the take offs even less, for you it is more getting something out of it for your well being and something for a CV/another skill when applying for another job etc...
Fingers crossed the advice you have been given works..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Yes I'm in the pension. It's £10.62 per month. I'm pleased with that though. My union is £3.60 per month so that's ok too.
I'm a really low earner but it's ok, I just was expecting more than I got this month that's all.0 -
Regarding the buses here and in your village, just as well we don't have to travel far eh? But it does kind of keep you within a certain limited area for shopping or socialising. At this rate even the free bus pass even if it is still available in the future the service will be so poor it won't be worth having.
An example how silly the system is...sorry for those not in my area...
I can go from my town to Stockton(not far away)upto perhaps 18.30pm via Darlington. Nothing after that there or returning to Darlington.
Otherwise I have to travel indirectly(adding to more time and miles to the journey)going Stockton via Durham and then returning I cannot if reaching Durham connect to a last bus for my town which means that journey is a waste of time. There is a bus but only stays within the Durham city boundaries.
I can travel to Darlington and from there to Stockton until approx 8pm but no buses back to my town after 8pm via Darlington. So you either have to use a taxi or not bother. Stockton is approx 16 miles from my town but because of the roundabout way I have to go I will be adding another 17 miles onto the journey if I use a bus. It's crazy!
Then they say don't use your car...I bet everyone has similar stories in their areas too all over the UK."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Glad that you are happy...looks like you will get your tax back."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Again, going from memory, it looks like they've taxed you fully at the BR (basic rate), and yes as Tiny said, you should have completed/signed a P46. Councils sometimes have their "own" system, so I'd give them a call on Monday. If it's emergency tax they use the single person's code but using a week one basis each week until sorted. Based on what you said, even with that you shouldn't have paid tax.
It must be lovely to be earning again though, I know even though I did part time after having DD I still liked having my own income.
edit, you'll get it refunded, hopefully a nice little amount before Xmas.0 -
Fuddle if you want to use up your usual cleaner on the stainless steel, just dry it hard with a piece of kitchen paper straight after and it will be streak-free. I also have to do this with my high-gloss worktops (which I will never ever get again!).
Feeling human again after having DD's sickness bug yesterday and having about 14 hours sleep. Today is dedicated to getting the house clean and tidy.
Interesting for those bothered by cold calls:

Any idea what wood you have then Byatt?
At least I know it can be sorted. You're so right there Byatt. When I saw the payslip come through the door, all blue like it used to be when I worked full-time I had a little skip. Even though financially we won't be any better off, it's my/our money. I worked for it and it feels like it's a positive step to getting back on the up.
I am still wanting to go the childminding route as I won't really be employable until youngest is in secondary school (my issues with worry and not being around while they are not fully independant... for anyone thinking I claim to do this I don't, my DH supports us.) so I really would like to do this. Anyway, the council has said there's a halt in the training as the government is carrying out a consultation into how childminders are trained. I just have to wait until that's over.
Still, I'm happy and we're keeping our heads above water. Keep plodding on
Possession - oh I bet your worktops are lush!0
